NRA Slams ‘Scary’ Open Carry Texas Gun Advocates

NRA Slams ‘Scary’ Open Carry Texas Gun Advocates

By Michael Allen, Mon, June 02, 2014

Texas state law allows the open carry of rifles, which the pro-gun group Open Carry Texas and its local chapters have been doing at restaurants in the Lone Star state.

However, the demonstrations have backfired and resulted in gun bans by restaurants such as Sonic and Chili's.

Open Carry Texas and its affiliates have also publicly bullied gun control advocates and people who call 911 during the armed demonstrations.

During Memorial Day, members of Open Carry Tarrant County followed and harassed a former U.S. Marine in downtown Fort Worth, Texas.

The National Rifle Association's lobbying arm, the Institute for Legislative Action, slammed Open Carry Texas last Friday on its website:

Yet while unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms.

Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.

"They might not like our methods, but our methods are working," CJ Grisham, the president of Open Carry Texas, told Mother Jones. "We're out there educating people on the street. We're showing them firsthand that you can see a gun out on the street or at a restaurant and it's not going to shoot you. I'm not going to let Open Carry Texas be beholden to anyone that doesn't get our mission."

Some NRA members have compared Open Carry Texas to the New Black Panthers, while Open Carry Texas has accused the NRA of siding with "ultra liberal gun control bullies" and the gun control group Moms Demand Action.

On Sunday, Open Carry Texas tweeted, "The NRA has lost its relevance and sided with the gun control extremists and their lapdog media."

NRA slams Texas gun group as ‘downright weird’ and ‘scary’ for rallying at restaurants with rifles

The National Rifle Association thinks Open Carry Texas has taken a law allowing rifles in public too far after backlash for bringing guns to chain restaurants like Chipotle and Starbucks. 'A small number (of Texans) have recently crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness,' the NRA said in an online posting Friday.

Even the National Rifle Association thinks some Texas residents are taking public gun toting too far.

The notorious gun lobby has slapped members of Open Carry Texas as “downright weird” for their insistence on bringing loaded semi-automatic rifles, including AR-15s and AK-47s, into family-friendly establishments like Chipotle and Starbucks.

The statement, released Friday, came one day before a throng of some 150 people, some armed with semi-automatic rifles and copies of the U.S. Constitution, assembled peacefully outside a Home Depot in North Richland Hills, a Dallas/Fort Worth suburb.

“We’re fundamentally changing America and changing Texas,” Mark Thompson, armed with a Beretta semi-automatic rifle during the rally Saturday, told the Dallas Morning News. “We’re letting people know they’re free.”

But the NRA, whose vice president Wayne LaPierre endorsed “a good guy with a gun” in schools and other public places shortly after the massacre at Newtown, said in a blog posting that “a small number (of Texans) have recently crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness.”

The state allows unlicensed people to openly carry rifles in public places, a law OCT has used “merely to draw attention” to themselves, the NRA said.

“Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself,” the statement says. “To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.”

MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America shared this photo after pushing Chipotle to make a statement about bringing armed guns into its restaurants.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America circulated a petition asking Chipotle to ban guns in restaurants after a rally last month at a Dallas-area restaurant spooked other customers. And Open Carry Texas demonstrations at Jack in the Box and Starbucks caused the companies to prohibit firearms from their respective establishments nationwide.

“I think they’re just a bunch of boobs,” Jon Felt, 49, told the Morning News as he watched Saturday’s demonstration. “They say they checked all these weapons. How do we know they’re empty? I don’t know who these people are.”

    'DOWNRIGHT SCARY'
NRA slams group's 'open carry' demonstrations

NRA says Open Carry Texas demonstrations 'downright scary'

The National Rifle Association has issued a strongly-worded criticism of a fellow gun rights group, calling its practice of so-called "open carry" demonstrations "downright scary."

The criticisms of Open Carry Texas were noted in an unsigned post published Friday on the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action page. Open Carry Texas members have become known for gathering in public places, mostly notably restaurants, carrying large, high-powered rifles.

    Most recently
, Sonic, Chipotle, and Chili's joined Starbucks, Wendy's, Jack in the Box, and Applebee's in banning firearms from their premises after protests by Open Carry Texas.

"Let’s not mince words," the post on the NRA's site said, "not only is it rare, it’s downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one’s cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates.

"Using guns merely to draw attention to yourself in public not only defies common sense, it shows a lack of consideration and manners," the NRA wrote. "That’s not the Texas way. And that’s certainly not the NRA way."

Open Carry Texas slammed the NRA Monday in a post on its Facebook page, saying, "The NRA has refused to learn for themselves how Open Carry Texas conducts itself other than what the liberal media and [former New York City Mayor Michael] Bloomberg funded gun control extremists have falsely portrayed. The more the NRA continues to divide its members by attacking some aspects of gun rights instead of supporting all gun rights, the more support it will lose."
