Allahpundit covered this yesterday, but it’s worth highlighting as an OOTD just for the sheer idiocy and evocations of a White House looking for snitches. Did no one in the Obama administration think about the historical reverberations of an executive branch trying to have neighbors squealing on each other when they dissent from the Fuehr — er, the President?

“There is a lot of disinformation about health insurance reform out there, spanning from control of personal finances to end-of-life care. These rumors often travel just below the surface via chain e-mails or through casual conversation. Since we can’t keep track of all of them here at the White House, we’re asking for your help. If you get an e-mail or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov.â€

I am afraid I have to turn in a friend of mine. He sent me the following email:

WHALES are FISH.
FISH are MAMMALS

It's not just disinformation about health care. The internet, and this site, are full disinformation about health care, the economy, etc. People take a story and fill it full of half truths and lies and post it on the internet and other people, some knowingly and some unknowingly, spread it all over the internet.

Here is an axample. (I just picked this one because it is on the site right now.)

FEMA to focus on children's needs during disasters

and someone takes it and fills it with half truths and lies and it become

FEMA Plans To 'Relocate' Our Children

http://www.alipac.us/ftopict-165735.html

FEMA Camps for people evacuated from a disaster area become "FEMA INTERNMENT CAMPS".
Your seen it. It's everywhere.

SOMEONE IS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY

and they are using fear and hate and the internet to do it.

Stop Opponents of Health Care Reform from Distorting Truth

Stop Opponents of Health Care Reform from Distorting the Truth

Statistics have been at the center of the current battle over health care, but opponents of reform have been deceiving the public with biased data that fits their ideological arguments.

The Washington Post just revealed that the Lewin Group, which is commonly cited by Republican lawmakers as an "independent, nonpartisan" think tank, is owned by UnitedHealth, one the country's largest health insurance companies.

This is bad, even by Washington standards. The Lewin Group's research has heavily influenced the health care debate, and its supposedly objective projections have been used to scare Americans away from supporting health care reform.

Tell opponents of health care reform to stop falsely presenting insurance industry research as unbiased information >

It's not surprising that a private insurance company would publish biased information to misinform people about health care reform, which threatens their billions of dollars in annual profits. But for lawmakers who oppose reform to repeat these biased reports as facts without acknowledging their true source is disingenuous and irresponsible.

The American people deserve an honest, straightforward debate on the merits of health care reform.

Tell members of Congress to stop using biased numbers provided by the insurance industry and start an honest debate about how to fix health care in America >

I agree that we need health care reform. I also agree that some are spreading misinformation. But I dont think silencing the those who oppose this plan is the right thing to do. When it comes to the town hall meetings, I think they should just be reformatted so that each side has a turn to speak. Anyone who speaks out of turn should be asked to leave. That way all sides are heard. If Obama wants people to hear his version of the truth, then he should hire people to hit the net and distribute information about the health care bill. But silencing dissention....I dont think its a good idea.
