Ohio county to pay $500K settlement over shooting

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Franklin County is proposing a $500,000 settlement to the family of a Somali immigrant shot to death during a confrontation with sheriff's deputies in Columbus.
Authorities said Nasir Abdi threatened the officers with a knife when they tried to take him back to a mental hospital in Dec. 2005. The settlement would require the sheriff's office to provide deputies more crisis and mental-health training.
A lawyer for Abdi's mother says her lawsuit will result in real changes that will save lives.
Sheriff James Karnes says his deputies acted appropriately, because Abdi came at them quickly with a knife.
The shooting sparked a protest by hundreds of Somalis at Columbus City Hall.
A grand jury declined to indict the deputies.
