Over 100 arrests made nationwide in Black Lives Matter protests

Over 100 arrests made nationwide in Black Lives Matter protests

After police increased their vigilance following the deadly shooting of policemen in Dallas, US law enforcement across the nation went on to arrest over 100 people protesting against police brutality and racism on Friday night.

As mourners for the five police officers killed in Thursday night’s shooting in Dallas ambush concluded their vigils, Black Lives Matter protests engulfed the country with renewed fervor.

Thousands of activists marched across US cities Friday night, demanding justice for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, black men who were shot dead by police officers earlier in the week.

The largest number of arrests was made in Rochester, New York, where protesters blocked downtown streets after a crowd began to gather from around 9:45pm.

Half an hour later, Rochester police in riot gear started to move people out of the intersections.

The officers began to arrest people after the mob of more than 400 people began to surround police lines and throw rocks at them, RPD said.

“At this point … there were 74 arrests for disorderly conduct. There were also two charges for resisting arrest,”
Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said at a news conference on Saturday. No one was injured.

While the situation “escalated a little bit”, police refrained from using force, and did not “deploy any weapons, any Tasers,” Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren told journalists.

In a similar protest in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Friday night, authorities went on to arrest 31 in a rally that drew hundreds just outside police headquarters.

Louisiana State Police said that arrests had been made mostly for obstructing a highway and inciting people to riot. At one point the situation got tense enough for an officer to pull his handgun on protesters. The incident has been caught on video, and police are now reviewing the footage.

“It’s difficult to tell why the officer pulled his weapon. We are working to identify this officer so we can better understand the reason he might have done this,”
Baton Rouge Lt. Johnny Dunham told NBC News.“After the Dallas murder of five officers at a protest the night before officers are very cautious and on the lookout for any threat. Tensions were very high last night on both sides. But in the end cooler heads prevailed.”

Louisiana State Police also confirmed reports that frozen water bottles were thrown at troopers during the rally.

Protests were demanding that officers, who killed 37-year-old Alton Sterling on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, face murder charges. The incident involving two officers was recorded by multiple bystanders, with the footage showing the shooting to have happened at point-blank range.

Another big rally took place in downtown Atlanta, Georgia with over 10,000 people in attendance.

Traffic downtown was brought to a standstill after activists started marching from the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

While the march proceeded peacefully, Georgia State Patrol said three people were arrested.

In Phoenix Arizona police responded with pepper spray and tear gas to disperse crowds, when protesters tried to take over the freeway as authorities cordoned off 10 ramps.

Three people were arrested and six were injured by the end of the night, police confirmed.

Phoenix Police Give Updates On Phoenix Protests

PHOENIX - Police have identified three men who were arrested during a "Rally for Justice" on Friday night in Phoenix .

Andre Hendrix, 24, and Christian Soto, 21, were arrested on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and obstructing governmental operations.

Devin Brooks, 24, was also arrested, but on a charge of disorderly conduct, or refusal to disburse.

Police said Saturday morning that the arrests were made after subjects threw rocks at officers during the demonstration.

Though several officers were hit with the rocks, no officers reported injuries.

RAW VIDEO: Protestors clash with Phoenix officers

Police also say that officers were given a route for a march during the demonstration, but it was changed at one point as some demonstrators intended to march onto the I-10 freeway in downtown Phoenix.

As many as six people were injured during falls or from pepperballs -- described by police as paintball-type balls with pepper spray -- deployed by officers to keep demonstrators back.

On Saturday, civil rights leader Rev. Jarrett Maupin, who led the demonstration, said "we never intended to actually march on the interstate. The goal of organizers was to threaten that action and we believed that the threat would facilitate the closure of the freeway", which in turn, did occur on Friday night.

Maupin applauded those who joined the "overwhelmingly peaceful protest". He acknowledged the arrests, saying in a statement:

"Of the estimated 1,000 protestors, 997 kept the faith and honored the legacy of violence-free public protest. I thank you all for maintaining your dignity and respecting your fellow citizens."

He also said, "the actions of those 3 people do not define the protest."

Maupin also thanked Phoenix Police for their "extraordinary public service" during the event.

Black Lives Matter marches took place across the UK on Friday and Saturday to protest the latest police killings of black men in the US.

On Friday, protesters marched to Westminster in London in a demonstration organized by Black Lives Matter London as a “plea for help”. The group was founded by Maryam Alian, an 18- year-old girl still at school.

"These people coming here to stand and unite, they are showing that they are against police brutality and that's the most important thing."
    she explained.

About 300 gathered in London’s Brixton to march to the local police station on Saturday, shouting “hands up, don’t shoot” and “black lives matter.”

In Birmingham, crowds gathered at the Bullring shopping center to show support for the victims of police brutality. A second protest called for justice for student Kingsley Burrell who died after being arrested in the West Midlands.

Another march is planned to take place at Oxford Circus in London on Sunday. “We’re going to keep showing our support,"Ali said.

The international marches were sparked following two fatal police shootings of black men within 48 hours in the US. Footage from both scenes went viral online.

On Tuesday, Anton Sterling was killed in Louisiana Baton Rouge after being roughly taken to the ground by two officers who shot him while he was pinned down.

In Falcon Heights, Minnesota on Wednesday Philando Castile was pulled and fatally shot by a police officer after he was pulled over for an alleged broken taillight. He was fired at as he was reaching for his driver's license. His girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter were in the car at the time, and Reynolds streamed the aftermath on Facebook, bringing the incident into the public eye.

The tension between protesters and the law enforcement was hiked further by the deadly attack against police in Dallas on Thursday night, which left five officers dead. The shooter was cornered and killed by the police with a bomb robot after a long stand-off.

Hundreds arrested in protests over shootings by police

    By Ashley Fantz, CNN
Updated 11:28 AM ET, Sun July 10, 2016

(CNN)After another night of intense, and sometimes violent, protests against the police shootings of black men, hundreds of demonstrators were either in jail or waiting to get out as the sun came up Sunday.

At least 198 people were arrested in New York and Chicago and in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where two black men were shot to death by police. The killings have sparked several days of protests.

Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson, a public school administrator who is considered among the movement's loudest voices, was among 125 people arrested Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Mckesson was protesting the death of Alton Sterling.

On Tuesday, Sterling, 37, was near a convenience store where he regularly sold CDs and DVDs. A homeless man approached him and asked for money, becoming so persistent that Sterling showed him his gun, a source told CNN. Police were called. Cell phone videos captured two officers wrestling Sterling to the ground and shooting him.

On Saturday night, Mckesson was walking along a major roadway and live-streamed his arrest for obstruction on Saturday on Periscope.

In St. Paul, about 50 protesters were arrested. They were demonstrating against the killing of Philando Castile, a school nutrition services supervisor. Last week, Castile was driving a car and was with his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, when they were pulled over for a broken taillight.

Reynolds posted a Facebook video of the aftermath of Castile's shooting. Castile told the officer he was armed and had a concealed carry permit, she said. The officer asked him for his license and registration and as he went to retrieve those items, the officer shot him multiple times, she explains as the recording continues, capturing the horror.

The killings have saddened and angered Americans of all racial backgrounds, and spurred thousands to march. There have been mostly peaceful demonstrations in Chicago, where three were arrested Saturday. Throngs protested in New York City, where 20 people were arrested.

Demonstrations have unfolded in cities including Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In Atlanta, a group of protesters on Friday confronted police over Interstates 75 and 85, then moved into the Midtown business district. A smaller protest was held Saturday.
Marchers also took to the streets Saturday night in Miami, with police saying Interstate 395 was shut down for a brief period. A reporter for CNN affiliate WPLG tweeted that demonstrators had blocked a major thoroughfare.

In Fort Lauderdale, a large group of Black Lives Matter supporters walked to the Broward County Courthouse and then the county jail, where prisoners heard their shouts and tapped on windows in response, WPLG reported.

Rocks, bottles fly in St. Paul

In St. Paul, however, scuffles broke out between protesters and police on Interstate 94.

Demonstrators blocked the freeway, and threw bottles, bricks and fireworks at police, authorities said.
At least five officers were injured by protesters -- one hit with a glass bottle and another by fireworks, according to St. Paul police. One was hit on the head with a large piece of concrete, possibly dropped from a bridge, according to police.
Another officer had been hit in the head with a rock, though it is unclear the extent of the injuries. Police say a Molotov cocktail was thrown at officers.
Law enforcement used crowd-control measures, including smoke and fired marking rounds similar to paintball rounds, said police spokesman Steve Linders.
As many as 200 people forced their way past Minnesota State Patrol troopers who were trying to block them from getting on the road.
After hours of clashes, things appeared calmer and a cleanup began. Interstate 94 reopened at around 2:30 a.m. ET.

In Washington, during the third night of protests, a group marched peacefully through downtown Saturday night, chanting, "We young. We strong. We marching all night on." They temporarily shut down Rock Creek Parkway.
About 400 people covered a city block as marchers moved across a large area of northwest Washington and headed toward the Georgetown neighborhood.

Officers in the line of fire

The same week Castile and were killed, a gunman killed five police officers at a Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas.
Their killer was an Afghanistan war veteran, 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson from the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, Texas.
Police searched his home and found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition and a personal journal of combat tactics. They are analyzing information in the journal, police said in a statement.
"This was a mobile shooter who had written manifestos on how to shoot and move, shoot and move, and that's what he did," Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said.
Johnson told police negotiators that he was upset about recent police shootings, that he wanted to kill white people -- especially white officers -- and that he acted alone, authorities said.
Johnson had no criminal record or known terror ties, a law enforcement official said.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve from March 2009 to April 2015, training as a carpentry and masonry specialist, according to Pentagon records. Johnson was deployed for about seven months in Afghanistan, from late 2013, and received an honorable discharge.
His rampage was the deadliest single incident for U.S. law enforcement since September 11, 2001. Two civilians were hurt, the mayor's office reported.
A police robot armed with a bomb killed Johnson.
Three other shootings, in Tennessee, Missouri and Georgia, have endangered police during rallies.

#DCprotest: After #PhilandoCastile's death, this couple says they worry about bringing a son into this world
    4:24 PM - 9 Jul 2016

Black Lives Matter protesters condemned the Dallas killings, calling the attack on law enforcement a tragedy not just for those affected but also for the nation.
"Black activists have raised the call for an end to violence, not an escalation of it. (Thursday's) attack was the result of the actions of a lone gunman," the group said in a statement.
"To assign the actions of one person to an entire movement is dangerous and irresponsible. We continue our efforts to bring about a better world for all of us."
