Some people say this is "how the Japanese multiply." Others say this is "Vedic Math." I'm not sure of the origin, but this is a visual way to multiply two numbers and it does work.
This must be how the most interesting man in the world does math. "I don't always multiply numbers by hand, but when I do, I use this trick."
I've explained why the method works in this post: http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/201...

Heather Dorniden is one of the most decorated track stars in University of Minnesota history. It was not uncommon for Dorniden to lead in her events, which is exactly what she was doing in her 600-meter race in 2008. That is, until the unthinkable happened.

Dorniden was neck and neck with three other competitors in the Big Ten Indoor Championships, but in the last leg of the high-paced run, she tripped, falling flat on her face.
Refusing to give up, Dorniden immediately got up and began sprinting. In the last 200 meters of the race, she was 30 meters behind the other runners, but that didn’t discourage her.
The crowd went wild, seeing Dorniden’s drive, but they never expected her to place, much less what she did next.
Dorniden pushed harder, catching up to the competitors and eventually surpassing them in a miraculous feat of determination.
Dorniden ended up winning the event, and is now a nine-time All American champion. She currently runs for Team USA Minnesota, but her act of perseverance in this 2008 race may be the most memorable moment of her career.

About:I found this video and the related article in the New York Times' "Well" Facebook newsfeed. You can see some of Vinnie's art here if you're interested.
Thankfully, Vinnie is not the only artist doing areola tattoos for masctectomy survivors. Nor is he the only artist doing beautiful work on women who have scars from their surgeries.
