LUBLIN, Poland -- Fake US treasury bonds with a face value of $100 million were seized by police in Poland, investigators said Monday.
TVN24 cited unconfirmed sources close to the case who said the gang was working in tandem with the Italian mafia. Two Italians, three Poles, two Ukrainians and one Moldovan were arrested during raids in the town of Lublin, eastern Poland on Sunday.
"This is the biggest ever operation of its kind in Poland and involves the biggest amount of US treasury bonds," Poland's anti-corruption agency, the CBA, said in a statement.
Police indicated more arrests could follow.
In February, police in Switzerland seized a massive $6.0 trillion in US Treasury bonds from a warehouse in Zurich. That raid also followed an investigation by Italian anti-mafia prosecutors.
