Almost two-thirds of Americans think the Obama administration is covering up facts of the Sept. 11, 2012, terror attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya -- and that Congress should create a special committee to get to the truth, a new poll showed Tuesday.

In the survey commissioned by Secure America Now, and conducted by pollsters John McLaughlin and Pat Caddell, 62 percent said creation of the special committee is important; 63 percent think the administration is covering up the facts of the seige that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador, Chris Stevens.

Only 29 percent of voters say the administration has been honest about the attack, the poll found.

In other results, the poll found 89 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of Independents believe the administration has been trying to cover up facts in the attack; 54 percent of Democrats believe the administration has been honest and forthcoming.

Of the voters who believe a special committee is important, 83 percent are Republicans and 58 percent of Independents; 50 percent of Democrats believe it's not important.

House Republicans have been seeking to renew attention on what they portray as a failure of the Obama administration to protect facilities in Benghazi prior to the deadly attack.

The poll of 600 likely voters was taken Sept 24-5, and had a 4 percent margin of error.
