President Obama calls for action to stop gun violence, but no new laws

Obama says an AK-47 belongs in the hands of soldiers, not criminals, but his spokesman says new gun control laws are not on the table.

Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP President Obama called for tougher background checks when purchasing guns.

President Obama called for "common sense" steps to reduce gun violence during a high-profile speech Wednesday night - but his spokesman later said they won't include any new laws.

Obama told a supportive audience at the National Urban League convention that hunting and shooting are part of the nation's “cherished national heritage,” but he said even gun owners would agree "that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals.”

"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons, and we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller," Obama said. "That a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily."

Obama's speech marked his first public comments on gun control since last week's massacre in Aurora, Colo., and raised expectations he may push for new legislation to prevent shooting deaths. The deadly mass shooting during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" prompted New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others to demand Obama and GOP rival Mitt Romney take a tougher stand on gun control.

But on Thursday, White House spokesman Jay Carney appeared to soften Obama's remarks during the daily press briefing, as reported by Politico.

Carney said Obama is focused on actions "short of legislation and short of gun laws that can reduce violence." He said the president's point was that "tackling the broader issue of violence is not just about gun laws."
He noted that Obama also wants to protect the "second amendment rights of law-abiding citizens."

Obama is competing with Romney to win the votes of rural residents in key swing states like Virginia and Ohio this November.

The Republican candidate also said on Wednesday that new laws aren't needed to prevent future violence.

"Political implications, legal implications are something which will be sorted out down the road," Romney told NBC News during an interview from London, where he is beginning a three-nation international tour. "But I don't happen to believe that America needs new gun laws."
But later, he appeared to suggest that accused Aurora killer James Holmes bought his guns illegally, when in fact he bought them through legal channels.

"A lot of what this young man did was clearly against the law. But the fact that it was against the law did not prevent it from happening," Romney said. "This person shouldn't have had any kind of weapons and bombs and other devices and it was illegal for him to have many of those things already. But he had them."

Last time Obama spoke he declared America a battle field... is it or is it not a Battlefield... if so who are the soldiers and who exactly is the enemy that he wants to disarm

and if dumb ass was referring to the Aurora shooting ... there was NO AK-47 Involved at all

    HOWEVER...

a HELL of a lot of AK-47s went to Mexican Drug Lords under Fast and Furious

In support of the bill S. 1867 SEC. 1031, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will "basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield" and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial "American citizen or not." Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because "America is part of the battlefield."

1st Point - According to the Republican Party Also Known as the Corleone Crime Familia. S. 1867 SEC. 1031, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will "basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield" and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial "American citizen or not."

2nd point... you might want to go back and check out the MIAC Report ... you are the Terrorist in the DC Crime Syndicates mind

3rd point - NO NEW Gun laws are not on the table.... but there is a Treaty waiting for the Democrat Party Also Known As The Gambino Crime Familia chief "In-Sain Husain" ... a Treaty is NOT a LAW so they are twisting reality to make it sound innocent

4th point - the 3rd -10th Amenment's are gone ...do to the combined efforts of the Gambino / Corleone Crime Familia's

there has been a VICIOUS Attack on the 1st Amendment by both crime syndicates

Currently the only thing / Last Thing protecting the 1st Amendment is the 2nd Amendment

now they are going after the 2nd Amendment through the Small Arms Treaty

once you are disarmed and the 2nd Amendment is gone

the 1st Amendment will soon follow into the dust bins of history

    its time to be scared
