Wikipedia is referred to by many as a non-reliable source because it allows for users to openly edit its content. Now they have editors who keep a careful eye to make sure that things don’t get out of hand, but many things reported on the site are completely untrue.
Despite it not being a credible source many still do reference the highly notorious site for information on a frequent basis. Given the reliable nature for much of its information though, it seems that some have begun to take advantage of the open forum nature of its entries – the government.
Keeping an eye out for abuse, certain government watch organizations have taken to keeping a close eye on Wikipedia edits that come from the IP address of government facilities and expose them through social media. Using the twitter handle @congressedits, the IT specialist behind the operation, Ed Summers seeks to keep a close eye on governmental propaganda.
Although he says he hasn’t quite yet discovered anything too far out of line, he explains that he’ll be keeping a close eye as well as digging through the past for recent abuses made by the current administration.
“There is an incredible yearning in this country and around the world for using technology to provide more transparency about our democracies,” Summers wrote. It should be noted however that there is also an incredible yearning for governments to sway political mindset through any means that may reach the desired effect.
