The US could collapse like the USSR, because it pursues futile military policies at the expense of economy, says Clyde Prestowitz, ex-Counselor to the Secretary of Commerce in the Reagan Administration. He thinks this track is risky and destructive.

Pure horse hockey. The PRIMARY PURPOSE of the Federal Government is the defense of the nation. Of all the mandates in the US Constitution this is the supreme mandate. If 90 peer cent of our resources went to this purpose it would be fully justified because that is the main justification for our central government. What the US Constitution does not require is Social Security, MEDICARE, MEDICAID, OBAMACARE, Food Stamps, Welfare, Aid to Dependent Children, grants to non-profit (and apparently mostly radical) groups such as Planned Parenthood, La Raza, etc., pork barrel kickbacks, corporate cronyism (be it to failed alternative energy companies, major corporations such as GE, or bailing out major corporations and financial institutions too incompetent and corrupt to survive on their own). Look at the unfunded requirements in for the next 20 years, and the problem is NOT the defense budget. The problem lies with the entitlements and the dumbass programs listed.
