Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, the anti-war liberal who twice ran for president, said today he will not seek election in Washington state and will leave when his term ends in January.

Kucinich lost a bitter Democratic primary to Rep. Marcy Kaptur. They were forced to run together because of redistricting, and he had been exploring the possibility of running in Washington.

In a letter to supporters, the eight-term lawmaker and former Cleveland mayor said he believes he "can best serve from outside the Congress."

"Because of my love of public service, I have given a great deal of time and much thought to the advice and encouragement I have received from so many people of goodwill in Washington State," Kucinich wrote. "I certainly want to continue to be of service to our country and to the working men and women who have built it.
