Costs, conflicts arise in Reid push for green power

Say this about U.S. Sen. Harry Reid: He really believes in renewable energy.
Reid has beat up NV Energy pretty good in recent years. In the closing days of the George W. Bush administration, Reid blocked plans to build coal-fired power plants in Nevada. He said in April on the "Nevada Newsmakers" show, "I don't think NV Energy has done enough to allow renewable energy to thrive."


But that same month, NV Energy reported it had exceeded its state-imposed green-energy requirement of 15 percent by purchasing 16.7 percent of its power from renewable sources. And that was in spite of the Public Utilities Commission rejecting a handful of renewable contracts in July 2011, saying the company hadn't justified the purchases were necessary to meet its quota.
Now Reid is pushing for a Chinese company he played a key role in recruiting to Nevada, ENN Mojave Energy LLC. The company plans a billion-dollar solar energy manufacturing and generating plant near Laughlin, but an ambitious development schedule is being threatened by a lack of green power customers.

Steve Tetreault quoted Reid in Tuesday's Review-Journal saying the project "would start tomorrow if NV Energy would purchase the power," but the company "has not been willing to work on this and that's such a shame."
Reid added: "NV Energy is a regulated monopoly. They control 95 percent of all the electricity that is produced in Nevada and they should go along with this."
They're not, at least not yet.

And there are some legitimate reasons: Power costs are passed directly to consumers, and green energy currently costs more than power generated by coal-fired or natural-gas burning plants. State law mandates NV Energy buy power as cheaply as possible, except when it's required to buy more-expensive green energy to meet state-mandated quotas. But the more green energy you buy, the higher bills climb.

NV Energy has already met its quota, and the PUC has already turned the company down when it proposed contracts that would have exceeded quotas. And when the company does buy power - which it plans to do next in 2014 - it does so by analyzing competitive bids.

Reid says those weak excuses. He said in that April interview that if "NV Energy wanted to do more with renewable energy, they could."

There's another factor, however, one more personal to Reid: His son, Rory Reid, is one of the attorneys for the ENN Mojave Energy project. A Reid spokeswoman said the senator did not suggest Reid's firm - Lionel, Sawyer & Collins - to ENN, nor has the elder Reid spoken to this son about the deal. (Reid imposed a strict ban on family members lobbying his office in 2003 after the Los Angeles Times asked him about lobbying by three of his four sons.)

But success for ENN in finding customers helps Rory Reid, and its failure could cost him a client. It's an undeniable conflict that Harry Reid should keep in mind as he twists arms at the PUC and NV Energy, lest he earn himself an ethics complaint.
Reid's office points out developing more renewable power will create jobs in Nevada that can't be outsourced and reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil. (It's also good for the environment.)

And while Reid said in that April interview that "Every day that goes by, the ability to produce solar [energy] is cheaper," the fact is, it's more expensive than coal and natural gas right now. Someday, green power may be cheaper than anything else. But that day isn't here yet, and until it arrives, Reid must mind the costs and the conflicts.

Up until last Friday, it was only speculated that Lisa Rizzolo, three weeks before her about-to-be ex-husband began his plea bargaining, participated in a collusive divorce and clandestine scheme to transfer most of the couple's assets to off shore accounts.
It was believed that because the Rizzolos used John Dawson, a well known asset protection lawyer who specializes in hiding his client's cash in foreign accounts, the scheme would be bullet proof. Also, John is the brother of U.S. Federal Court Judge Kent Dawson, the same judge who presided over the trials of 15 Crazy Horse employees, and handed down suspiciously light sentences.

And what about the prestigious law firm Lionel Sawyer & Collins where John Dawson works? Are they proud of their associate's mob clientele?
It's been fifteen months since Rick Rizzolo was released from prison. Quadriplegic Kirk Henry is still waiting for his ongoing medical bills to be paid while Rizzolo is seen squandering tens of thousands in cash in local casinos on a nightly basis.

In May, attorneys for Henry asked U.S. Judge Philip Pro to issue a Court Order requiring the law firm Lionel Sawyer and Collins to produce all financial documents pertaining to RIck and Lisa Rizzolo. This after the criminal defense firm that represents the couple, Patti & Sgro, filed papers with the Federal Court purporting that all the Rizzolo's financial records and legal documents were destroyed in a "flood" at the law office.

Until last Friday when INSIDE VEGAS obtained the transcript of Lisa's deposition in the Kirk Henry case, even the FBI did not know where the couple's assets are actually hidden.

John Dawson is the brother of Federal Judge Kent Dawson, an appointee of U.S. Senator Harry Reid who is a business partner of Jay Brown (see: Democrat leader reaped $1.1 million from sale of land he didn't own - USA Today, 10/11/2006). Brown was one of the Rizzolo's former corporate agents, and represented the Crazy Horse in 2006.
John Dawson's name has not yet been mentioned as an alleged co-conspirator, but I believe it's just a matter of time -- no matter who his brother is -- before the "asset protection" expert is also subpoenaed for deposition.
In 2008, John Dawson was a featured speaker at the annual conference of the Southpac Offshore Planning Institute 2008 Annual Conference held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. The next seminar is scheduled for Encore at the Wynn Las Vegas on October 1 & 2, 2009, and John Dawson may again be a featured speaker.
According to a conference attendee, John Dawson neglected to tell the audience how he hid the Rizzolo's assets at the same time his brother was presiding over the highly publicized trials of the couple's goon squad. But during his Southpac presentation, Dawson reportedly did a good job of analyzing the potential for attorney liability, a subject he should be acutely aware of.
By no surprise, Mr. Dawson is also the Rizzolo's corporate agent.

To the editor:

In response to your Tuesday story, "Utility pushed on solar project": President Franklin Roosevelt had his CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and now, it seems, Sen. Harry Reid has his own CCC (Chinese Crony Capitalist).

Sen. Reid has issued his opening salvo against "evil" NV Energy because the company does not want to buy grossly overpriced solar energy from his CCC. The project, like every other crony capitalist green energy hustle, won't fly unless the CCC has a captive market of people to be further impoverished by ever-higher electric bills.

If Sen. Reid follows his usual modus operandi we can expect a few more public shots across NV Energy's bow plus lots of non-public pressure on the Public Utilities Commission. We can also expect a bill in the 2013 Legislature to up the percentage of solar energy the utility must buy and an accelerated time frame to buy it. The bill will be written is a way that makes the CCC's company the only one eligible for the contract. No competitive bidding process necessary. After all, free markets are so messy and "unfair," right?

I think Romney should accuse Reid of conflict of interest, fraud, graft, nepotism, performing as an unregistered Communist China agent, espionage, and high treason. If Reid denies these accusations, and he probably will, then all Mitt has to say is " Prove it."

Doubtless you have all heard of Senator Reid’s comments on July 31st that he’s heard from a Bain investor that Romney hadn’t paid any taxes for 10 years. Then, on August 2nd, he doubled down, even in absence of any actual evidence, and he repeated those allegations on the Senate floor. On August 3rd, he tripled down. I think the title from the HotAir post says it all: “My source on Romney’s taxes is so incredibly credible that I won’t say who he is,”…Rrright.

Politifact has finally weighed in on the subject, and it’s not good for Reid:

Reid has said Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. It was no slip of the tongue. He repeated the claim on at least two more occasions, at one point saying that “the word is out” when in fact it was only Reid who put that “word” out.

Reid has produced no evidence to back up his claim other than attribution to a shadowy anonymous source. Romney has denied the claim, and tax experts back him up, saying that the nature of Romney’s investments in Bain make it highly unlikely he would have been able to avoid paying taxes altogether — especially for 10 years.

Reid has made an extreme claim with nothing solid to back it up. Pants on Fire!

I suppose this is one of those occasions where a lie is so absurd that they have to come out against it. Even the White House, which has been trying to ply the tax returns issue for the past few weeks, has decided Reid’s forgotten the first rule of holes.*

Nevertheless, that hasn’t stopped Reid from quadrupling down.

The Blaze– I am President Obama’s classmate at Columbia University, Class of ’83. I am also one of the most accurate Las Vegas oddsmakers and prognosticators. Accurate enough that I was awarded my own star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars. And I smell something rotten in Denmark. Obama has a big skeleton in his closet. It’s his college records. Call it “gut instinct” but my gut is almost always right. Obama has a secret hidden at Columbia- and it’s a bad one that threatens to bring down his presidency. Gut instinct is how I’ve made my living for 29 years since graduating Columbia.

Obama and his infamous strategist David Axelrod understand how to play political hardball, the best it’s ever been played. Team Obama has decided to distract America’s voters by condemning Mitt Romney for not releasing enough years of his tax returns. It’s the perfect cover. Obama knows the best defense is a bold offense. Just keep attacking Mitt and blaming him for secrecy and evasion, while accusing him of having a scandal that doesn’t exist. Then ask followers like Senator Harry Reid to chase the lead. The U.S. Senate Majority Leader appears to now be making up stories out of thin air, about tax returns he knows nothing about. It’s a cynical, brilliant, and vicious strategy. Make Romney defend, so he can’t attack the real Obama scandal.

This is classic Axelrod. Obama has won several elections in his career by slandering his opponents and leaking sealed documents. Not only do these insinuations and leaks ruin the credibility and reputation of Obama’s opponents, they keep them on the defensive and off Obama’s trail of sealed documents.

By attacking Romney’s tax records, Obama’s socialist cabal creates a problem that doesn’t exist. Is the U.S. Senate Majority Leader making up stories out of thin air? You decide. But the reason for this baseless attack is clear- make Romney defend, so not only is he “off message” but it helps the media ignore the real Obama scandal.

My answer for Romney? Call Obama’s bluff.

Romney should call a press conference and issue a challenge in front of the nation. He should agree to release more of his tax returns, only if Obama unseals his college records. Simple and straight-forward. Mitt should ask “What could possibly be so embarrassing in your college records from 29 years ago that you are afraid to let America’s voters see? If it’s THAT bad, maybe it’s something the voters ought to see.” Suddenly the tables are turned. Now Obama is on the defensive.
