Revolutionary scenes in France as Macron is losing control

Revolutionary scenes in France as Macron is losing control

By Paul Dijks 19 November 2018

There are lots of happenings in France at the moment. President Macron, already in the dumpster of approval ratings, in what appears to be an attempt to sink yet lower, has imposed a tax hike on already rising diesel prices in France.

The French people are outraged and on Saturday, began their ‘Yellow Vest’ protests. Quite possibly one of the largest protests to date as it’s estimated that 300,000 to one million people are protesting throughout the country.

They are angry over the high fuel prices and the governments refusal to back down on fuel taxes on Monday. Protesters are blocking access to fuel depots and are stopping traffic on major roads throughout France.

The ‘Yellow Vest’ movement began on social media in October over a surge in fuel prices this year, particularly the price of diesel, with many blaming taxes implemented in recent years in France’s anti-pollution fight.
It has quickly escalated into a much broader protest over slack spending under President Emmanuel Macron. More than 850,000 people signed a petition supporting the ‘Yellow Vests’ and there are hundreds of pages on Facebook calling on people to join the protests.
Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that the government has heard the anger of the people, but on Sunday night reiterated that it would maintain the fuel taxes, which are due to increase yet again in January.
Macron’s approval rating is down to 25 per cent and dropping fast.

France Suffers Anti-Carbon Revolt: Massive Road Blocks Against Macron's Diesel Tax

    Tue, 11/20/2018 - 05:00

Authored by Mike Shedlock via MishTalk,

In stunning irony, the French protest against Macron's diesel tax, while Macron insists the UK abide by climate accord.

Please consider France’s Climate Change Commitments Trigger Rising Diesel Prices and Street Protests.
On Saturday, more than 282,700 people, many clad in yellow vests, took to — and, in many places, also literally took — the streets, according to the French Interior Ministry. The ministry said a network of drivers blocked roads at some 2,000 locations across the country, generating backups for miles and causing one death.
The protesters’ chief complaint: the rising cost of diesel fuel. The recent price hike is a direct result of President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to curbing climate change, which included higher carbon taxes for 2018, the first full year of his term. But beyond the diesel issue, many turned out Saturday to voice any number of other frustrations with the “president for the rich,” who is seen as increasingly removed from ordinary people’s concerns.
The stirrings of the “yellow vest” campaign behind Saturday’s protests began this summer, with online petitions urging Macron to reconsider. But the loudest voice was that of Jacline Mouraud, a white-haired hypnotist and grandmother of three from Brittany who has become the star of the movement.
On Saturday, Mouraud was asked to explain the death of the protester. “I deplore the death of this woman,” she said, speaking to Europe 1 radio. “But who is responsible for this situation? The French government is responsible for the death of this woman.”
According to a poll published Friday by the Odoxa agency for France’s Le Figaro newspaper — albeit with only 1,000 respondents — as many as 3 in 4 French people agree.

The French government approved a measure in late 2017 increasing a direct tax on diesel as well as a tax on carbon, allegedly to fight against climate change. The so-called Contribution Climat Énergie (CCE), a French version of the carbon tax, has steadily increased fuel prices in recent years. Drivers across the country have balked at the rising price of diesel as it disproportionately affects workers who depend on their vehicles to get to and from their jobs. Two-thirds of French people expect a “social explosion” in coming months.
The gilets jaunes are a grass-roots revolt against high fuel prices, and they threaten to paralyze France on Saturday.
The gilets jaunes have organised at least 630 protests nationwide via the blocage17novembre.com website, designed by an 18-year-old student. Some call for go-slows on highways. Others want to block roads, which is punishable by two years in prison and a €4,500 fine. Interior minister Christophe Castaner says no “total blockage” will be tolerated.
But several police unions have expressed sympathy, and promised not to punish petty or “middle-size” offences “out of solidarity with the citizens”.
The rise of the gilets jaunes coincides with Macron’s record low 26 per cent approval rating. A poll published by Ifop on November 14th indicates two-thirds of French people expect a “social explosion” in coming months.

Massive ‘anti-Macron’ protests now even spread to Belgium

By Paul Dijks 22 November 2018

The man who wants to ‘unite’ Europe. Beleaguered President of France, Emmanuel Macron is quite possibly the least popular man in Europe.
His ‘approval rating’ barely holding onto 25 per cent and now his own country is protesting him in one of the largest protests ever, the ‘Yellow Vests’ or ‘Hi-Viz’ protests which included an estimated 300,000 to one million people last weekend, are protesting throughout France.
Those protests have now spilled into Belgium. The target of the protests against fuel prices and tax now include the big Total petrochemicals plant at Feluy in Wallonia.

Environ 30 arrestations. Masked individuals have also joined the protestors as the protests are not limited to a political party. There were roughly 40 people arrested, several vehicles were seized.
The protest stopped traffic on the E19 motorway potentially requiring repairs to the motorway from the damage from the protest.
Francophone broadcaster RTBF speaks of “war scenes” on Belgian soil. There were other blockades in Wallonia last night with around 150 lorries prevented from continuing on their way.
The protests of people in yellow vests started in France on Saturday with 300,000 to one million people protesting throughout the country.

Clashes on Champs-Elysees as French protesters rage against taxes

Paris (AFP) – Anti-government protesters clashed with French police on the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Saturday, leaving the famed avenue cloaked in tear gas on a fresh day of demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner blamed the unrest on far-right agitators who ignored a ban on demonstrations in the area and who threw projectiles at security forces.
The protest movement began a week ago when hundreds of thousands of protesters wearing high-visibility yellow vests blockaded roads in a largely spontaneous outpouring of anger about higher diesel taxes.
There was still potential for the enduring anger to snowball into a major stand-off between the government and opponents of Macron’s pro-business agenda who are voicing a wider range of grievances.
However this time, while there was major disruption on roads across the country, turnout was lower than a week ago and a call from protest leaders to block the capital looked to have failed.
By mid-afternoon, 81,000 protestors had been counted across France, compared with about 244,000 at the same time last week, figures from the interior ministry showed.
Around 8,000 took to the streets in Paris, with about 5,000 on the Champs-Elysees.
    – ‘Can’t handle it’ –
Over the last week, two people died and over 750 people, including 136 police officers, were injured in sometimes violent demonstrations that have shone a light on frustrations in many rural areas and small towns of France.
The “yellow vests” hail overwhelmingly from non-urban areas of France. They are strident about feeling overlooked and penalised by policies they see as being pushed through by elitist politicians in Paris.
Former investment banker Macron was elected on a pledge to put more money in workers’ pockets. But the effects of his pro-business reforms on unemployment and purchasing power have been limited so far.
Many of the often low-income “yellow vest” protesters are particularly incensed at his decision to hike anti-pollution taxes on diesel, while scrapping a wealth tax on the rich.
“I’m not just fighting against the price of fuel. It’s about tax, what we pay,” protester Catherine Marguier told AFP at a pay booth on the A81 motorway near the village of La Gravelle in northwest France.
“People can’t handle it any more. We need to change the government, the people at the top,” she said.
Around her, hundreds of “yellow vests” had commandeered the booth and were allowing motorists to pass through for free.
“We’re not there to be fleeced,” read the slogan on one banner.
Revolts against taxes have been a feature of French public life for centuries. Citizens still pay some of the highest in Europe as a percentage of GDP, and fuel-price protests are a common modern occurrence.
Previous rounds pitting the government against drivers took place in 1995, 2000, 2004, and 2008, often when tax increases coincided with high oil prices — as they have this year.
For political analyst Jean-Yves Camus, the French tend to rise up against taxes in particular when they feel the country’s revered public services are failing them.
“The acceptance of taxes is based on the notion of redistribution,” he said. “It declines when public services recede, the safety nets dwindle, and the gap between rich and poor increases.”
    – Le Pen blamed –
Opposition parties on the hard left and right have cheered on the protesters.
A poll by the Odoxa research group for Le Figaro newspaper this week found that 77 percent of respondents described it as “justified”.
Castaner blamed the clashes on the Champs-Elysees on far-right leader Marine Le Pen. The police were facing groups “who notably had responded to the call of Marine Le Pen and want to attack the country’s institutions just as they want to attack (government) lawmakers,” the minister said.
Le Pen rejected the remarks, saying she had never called for violence and claiming the government was trying to make her the scapegoat.
“We have just demonstrated peacefully, and we were teargassed,” said Christophe, 49, who travelled from the Isere region in eastern France with his wife to protest in the capital. “We see how we are welcomed in Paris.”
Macron, who is under pressure to tackle pollution ahead of European Parliament elections next year in which the environment is expected to feature prominently, has refused to back down on taxing polluters.
But with his ratings languishing at record lows of under 30 percent, he has sought to present a more empathetic side.
“We have heard the message of citizens,” one of his aides said on Thursday.
