We’re All Guinea Pigs Under ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

We’re All Guinea Pigs Under ‘Monsanto Protection Act’

If ever there was an example of corporations turning elected representatives against the interests of the American people, it’s in a provision protecting genetically modified foods that was tucked into a spending bill signed Tuesday by President Obama. It’s doubtful that many politicians even realized that what’s being called the “Monsanto Protection Act” by critics was included in H.R. 933.
Section 735 of the bill, officially called the Farmer Assurance Provision, is a giveaway to agriculture corporations, including biotech giant Monsanto, which apparently helped write the bill. The provision essentially eliminates any possibility of plaintiffs or even of courts to seek redress should the current wave of genetically modified foods flooding grocery stores turn out to be bad for people after all.
Genetically modified, or GMO, foods have been making their way into the nation’s food chain for years, but their presence on store shelves has greatly expanded in recent years. Not only do GMO foods typically go unlabeled for direct human consumption, but they are being fed to the farm animals that provide the nation’s meat supply.
Critics have said that the GMO foods have not been adequately tested and that Americans are effectively being used as guinea pigs and risking their health while Monsanto and other biotech companies grow fabulously wealthy.
Monsanto in particular in recent years has angered many farmers and food producers because of its hard-knuckle practices and near-monopoly dominance of the seed business. More and more, farmers have no choice but to get their seeds from Monsanto, which also does its best to prevent its customers from storing seeds and breeding their own strains of crops as farmers have done through natural methods for centuries.

Monsanto Openly Wrote It’s Own Protection Act and Obama Signed IT…Congrats USA

    (Before It's News)
Surprised? Monsanto Openly Wrote Own Monsanto Protection Act

    Written by: Anthony Gucciardi
President Obama has signed into law the notorious Monsanto Protection Act legislation hidden inside of the Continuing Resolution spending bill, which protects Monsanto and its genetically modified creations from federal courts.

For a brief period before the bill was passed by the Senate and now signed into law by Obama, both myself and many others in the alternative news community crusaded tirelessly to alert politicians and activists in order to stop the Protection Act from going through. Unfortunately, time was not on our side. The hasty vote by the Senate and the news blackout from the mainstream media were enough to break through the warnings of concerned activists (and people who just want real food). Now, however, renewed interest in the GMO labeling campaign and the fight against Monsanto brews. With such a blatant and cocky act against the United States and its people, Monsanto has set itself up to fail. Let’s remind Obama of his promise to label GMOs he made many years ago.

It should come as no surprise to many of you to find out that Monsanto actually authored the wording of its own Monsanto Protection Act hidden in the recently passed and signed Continuing Resolution spending bill. How could a major corporation write its own laws and regulations, you ask?

Quite frankly I think it’s important to understand that the entire Senate passed the bill containing the Protection Act, but the politician who actually gave Monsanto the pen in order to write their very own legislation is no others than Roy Blunt — a Republican Senator from Missouri. As the latest IB Times article reveals, the Missouri politician worked with Monsanto to write the Monsanto Protection Act. This was confirmed by a New York news report I will get to shortly.

As you probably know I do not play the political clown game of left verses right, and instead highlight corruption and wrongdoing wherever it is found — regardless of party affiliation. In the case of Senator Blunt, he admits to colluding with Monsanto, a corporation that has literally been caught running ‘slave-like’ working conditions in which workers are unable to leave or eat (among many worse misdeeds).

This is one of the most blatant offenses against the citizens of the United States I’ve seen in a long time. A population that Blunt swore to serve. It’s not for the United States public at all, and it’s a serious matter that I don’t think is properly understood. The passing of this bill into law means that Monsanto is now immune from federal courts regarding any suspension or action on their crops that have been deemed to be dangerous to the people (or the environment).

This means crops that were approved and later found to damage the environment or the public will be immune from United States government action. Theoretically, one million studies could find that Monsanto’s latest creation was causing a massive cancer wave and under this law Monsanto could continue to peddle the crop to the public. The federal courts would (or will) be helpless to stop

Monsanto, effectively giving Monsanto power over the entire branch of the United States government. Food Democracy Now, a major activist organization that organized signatures to fight the Monsanto Protection Act, described the rider:

“The Monsanto Protection Act would force the USDA to allow continued planting of any GMO crop under court review, essentially giving backdoor approval for any new genetically engineered crops that could be potentially harmful to human health or the environment.”

You can contact Senator Blunt through his website and let him know what you think about his decision to let Monsanto write its own Protection Act. No longer can we sit idly by while corporate juggernauts like Monsanto triumph over the people through swindling and deceit. Share this article, the image, and publicly denounce all politicians willing to sell their souls to Monsanto.

GMA To File Suit Against Vermont To Eliminate New GMO Label Law

    By Paul A. Lauto, Esq.
Posted Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 05:23pm EDT
Keywords: GM Label Law, GMA, GMOs, President Obama, Vermont

by Long Island Attorney Paul A. Lauto, Esq.
The GMO battle between the people and corporate greed rages on. In the glaring absence of a federal GMO label law to uphold the peoples’ right to know what is in our food, the state of Vermont has led the way by passing our country’s first state GMO label law. Certainly one would think that it is reasonable for a state to take action to protect its people, when our President fails to stand by his promise to do so. But reasonableness does not necessarily apply when it comes to corporate greed.
As anticipated, the Grocery Manufacturers’ Association (GMA) has formally announced their plans to undo the good work of the state of Vermont. The GMA issued a statement yesterday on May 8, 2014, declaring,
“Today, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin signed into law HB 112, a bill that is critically flawed and not in the best interests of consumers. It sets the nation on a costly and misguided path toward a 50-state patchwork of GMO labeling policies that will do nothing to advance the safety of consumers.”
The statement continued, “Consumers who prefer to avoid GM ingredients have the option to choose from an array of products already in the marketplace labeled ‘certified organic.’ The government therefore has no compelling interest in warning consumers about foods containing GM ingredients, making this law’s legality suspect at best. In light of this fact, in the coming weeks GMA will file suit in federal court against the state of Vermont to overturn the law.”
As part of their statement, the GMA encouraged policymakers in Vermont to support the so called Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, which would require GMO foods to be labeled only if the FDA determines there is a health or safety risk. The GMA purported that it is in this way that “Any labeling of GM ingredients would therefore be based on science, not fear… .”
It appears that the only fear present, is the GMA’s fear of a lowered profit margin. Perhaps that is why they support the so called Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, which makes GMO labeling contingent on the FDA determining a health or safety risk. GMO proponents believe that waiting for the FDA to find a health risk with GM foods, is tantamount to waiting for Christmas to arrive in July.
Unfortunately, our President failed to honor and keep his campaign promise to the people, that he would make sure that we would know whether or not our food was genetically modified. Had Obama kept his promise, upon being elected he would have taken steps to enact a federal GMO label law. A federal GMO label law would have obviated the need for the long and costly battle on the state level that has ensued and continues to this day. But alas, once again it seems to be politics as usual. However, it is the people and not the politicians, that will pay the price.

If ever there was an example of corporations turning elected representatives against the interests of the American people, it's in a provision protecting genetically modified foods that was tucked into a spending bill signed Tuesday by President Obama.
It's doubtful that many politicians even realized that what's being called the "Monsanto Protection Act" by critics was included in H.R. 933.

The provision essentially eliminates any possibility of plaintiffs or even of courts to seek redress should the current wave of genetically modified foods flooding grocery stores turn out to be bad for people after all.
Genetically modified, or GMO, foods have been making their way into the nation's food chain for years, but their presence on store shelves has greatly expanded in recent years. Not only do GMO foods typically go unlabeled for direct human consumption, but they are being fed to the farm animals that provide the nation's meat supply.
The result is that our entire food chain is being reduced to dependence on only the strains of seeds that Monsanto provides and controls.
According to the International Business Times, the "Monsanto Protection Act" signed into law without fanfare Tuesday bars federal courts from halting sale or planting of GMO seeds regardless of any health issues that may be recognized in the future.
This means the Department of Agriculture, which works closely with Monsanto, would be able to ignore court rulings against GMO foods.

A Republican senator, Roy Blount, cooperated with Monsanto representatives to craft the provision's language, which was inserted into what was supposed to be a spending bill averting government shutdown, according to the New York Daily News.
So once again, Congress' inability to approve a budget, members' laziness about reading what they are actually voting on, and collusion with wealthy campaign contributors have combined to screw over the rest of us.
Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety, took Democrats and Sen. Barbara Mikulski in particular to task for working with Monsanto and not doing their homework on this rider: "In this hidden backroom deal, Sen. Mikulski turned her back on consumer, environmental and farmer protection in favor of corporate welfare for biotech companies such as Monsanto. This abuse of power is not the kind of leadership the public has come to expect from Sen. Mikulski or the Democrat Majority in the Senate."
Actually, I'd say it's exactly what most of us expect, but both parties gorged themselves from this trough.
But don't stop the blame train at Congress. While the media told us the nation was fixated on gay "marriage" arguments at the Supreme Court, President Obama had been given a petition with more than 250,000 voters' signatures asking him to oppose the "Monsanto Protection Act." A horde of protesters against the rider were demonstrating at the gates of the White House as Obama signed the bill.
So much for the voice of the people.
The provision will only be in force for six months because of the limits of the overall bill, but you can bet something similar will be tucked into another spending bill or other piece of legislation before this expires.
Seattle attorney Bill Marler, who has represented victims of foodborne illness, told the N.Y. Daily News, "I think any time you tweak with the ability of the public to seek redress from the courts, you create a huge risk."
Now if history is any indication, Monsanto is going to have several "experts" leave comments below telling us there's absolutely nothing wrong with GMO foods, as they have done with past articles written on related topics. I'm interested in hearing what the rest of you readers think about this under-reported potential threat to our health, so leave a comment.
