Sarah Palin, former Republican vice presidential candidate, has drawn outrage over a New Year's Day Facebook post showing her son Trig standing on the family dog.

Days after Sarah Palin came under fire from PETA and online commenters for a photo she posted of her son standing on the family dog, the one-time Republican vice presidential candidate fired back at "double standard radicals."

Palin on Saturday called the organization "hypocritical" for targeting her rather than talk show host Ellen DeGeneres — who posted a photo of her daughter standing on a dog to her show's Facebook page — and President Barack Obama, who wrote in his autobiography "Dreams From My Father" that he ate dog meat while living in Indonesia as a boy.

"Dear PETA, chill. At least Trig didn't eat the dog," Palin said.

PETA responded on Saturday: "PETA simply believes that people shouldn't step on dogs, and judging by the reaction that we've seen to Sarah Palin's Instagram photo, we're far from alone in that belief."

The original post — which garnered more than 52,000 likes, 12,000 comments and 7,400 shares — showed Palin's 6-year-0ld son Trig standing on the dog in order to reach the sink.

That drew the ire of PETA, who blasted Palin in a Friday news release.

"It's odd that anyone—let alone a mother—would find it appropriate to post such a thing, with no apparent sympathy for the dog in the photo," PETA said in the release. "Then again, PETA, along with everyone else, is used to the hard-hearted, seeming obliviousness of this bizarrely callous woman, who actually thought it appropriate to be filmed while turkeys were being slaughtered right behind her in full view of the camera."
