Officials: NY Man Planned to Blow Self Up in DC Over Country's Direction

Police and FBI agents searched a Hudson Valley, New York, home Wednesday and arrested the 56-year-old man living there after learning about his alleged plan to build a bomb and blow himself up in Washington, D.C. on Election Day, two law enforcement officials told News 4 New York.
Court documents say Paul Rosenfeld wanted to draw attention to his belief in an ancient election system called "sortition," a method of choosing political officials at random.
Officials tell News 4 Rosenfeld had no criminal history but had told a reporter in Pennsylvania he planned to blow himself up on the Washington Mall around Election Day because he was angry about the country's direction.
FBI agents pulled over Rosenfeld while he was driving on Tuesday, and he confessed to the plot, telling them he ordered black powder over the Internet and built a bomb in his basement.

Authorities searching his home found eight pounds of black powder explosive meant to be used in a bomb that would ultimately weigh 200 pounds.
He had no plans to hurt anyone else, officials said. He is believed to be a lone actor not affiliated with any international terror group or ideology.
Rosenfeld was charged in federal court with unlawful manufacture of a destruction device and interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive.

"Had he been successful, Rosenfeld’s alleged plot could have claimed the lives of innocent bystanders and caused untold destruction," said FBI Assistant Director in Charge William Sweeney.
The supervisor for the Rockland County town said in a statement that "there is no danger to the public."

TAPPAN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A New York man is under arrest for allegedly plotting to blow himself up on the National Mall on election day.
Paul Rosenfeld, 56, wanted to kill himself to draw attention to his “radical political beliefs,” authorities said.

“As alleged, Paul M. Rosenfeld concocted a twisted plan to draw attention to his political ideology by killing himself on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. risking harm to many others in the process,” said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman. “Rosenfeld’s alleged plan for an Election Day detonation cut against our democratic principles.”
Rosenfeld allegedly supported a political belief called sortition, which advocates for random selection of government officials.
Rosenfeld allegedly bought large quantities black powder over the internet to build a large bomb in his basement, authorities said. He had previously made and tested other small bombs, according to authorities.
When FBI agent searched his home, they found “what appeared to be a functional explosive device weighing approximately 200 pounds.”
The bomb was removed from his home and transported to a safe location, officials said.
FBI agents could be seen removing boxes from Rosenfeld’s home in Tappan Wednesday.
Rosenfeld was charged with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. He is also charged with interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, which also has a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Rockland County man arrested for building 200-pound bomb, plotting to detonate it in DC on election day

Paul Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, was arrested on federal charges of manufacturing an explosive device.

A Rockland County man cops say built a 200-pound bomb he was planning to explode in a suicide attack on Washington, D.C., on Election Day was arrested Wednesday.

Paul Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, was busted on federal charges of manufacturing an explosive device.

“As alleged, Paul M. Rosenfeld concocted a twisted plan to draw attention to his political ideology by killing himself on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. — risking harm to many others in the process,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said.

“Rosenfeld’s alleged plan for an Election Day detonation cut against our democratic principles.”

In August and September 2018, Rosenfeld sent letters and text messages to a person in Pennsylvania detailing his scheme, authorities allege. The recipient of those communications went to the FBI, court papers show.

Rosenfeld wanted to draw attention to his belief in “sortition,” a political theory that advocates the appointment of government officials by random selection from a pool of qualified candidates.

When cops stopped his car Tuesday, Rosenfeld waived his Miranda rights and told officers he ordered large quantities of black powder over the internet, which he transported from a spot in New Jersey to his house, authorities say.

He used a burner phone to communicate with people about his plot, the records show.

He said he used approximately eight pounds of black powder to construct a large explosive device in the basement of the home. He also disclosed that he had tested smaller devices.

His home was searched and agents say they found a functioning bomb weighing about 200 pounds inside a plywood box. The device was taken from the basement and brought to a secure location.

They also found a fusing system for triggering bombs and empty canisters of black powder. The fusing system was made up of a switch that would generate an electrical charge that would spark an e-match inside the bomb.
