GOP Poll Targets Nelson On Health Care
    Posted by Mike Memoli

A new poll from the Tarrance Group (R) commissioned by the American Future Fund aims to put the squeeze on Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson (D) over health care.

In the survey (500 LVs, 12/14-15, MoE +/- 4.5%), respondents were asked: "In general, do you favor or oppose President Obama's plan to expand health care coverage to most Americans even if this plan increases the role of the federal government in health care and increases the cost of the deficit." Two-thirds responded that they oppose it, compared to 26 percent who favor it.

But it should be noted that the wording of the question differs significantly from the question other firms ask, and Democrats and the White House contend that their plan would actually reduce the deficit.

On another question, 39 percent say they favor "major changes" in the current health care system, and another 8 percent say a new system should replace the current one; 46 percent say only minor changes are needed.

The real warning for Nelson, who holds what may be the 60th vote for Democrats, comes in this result:
61 percent say that if Nelson votes for the current plan, they are less likely to support him for re-election in 2012; 26 percent say it would make them more likely to support him.

Nelson does have a 51 percent job approval rating among Nebraskans, compared to 41 percent who disapprove.

    Favorable Ratings
    Gov. Heineman (R) 64 / 12
    Sen. Nelson (D) 58 / 34
    Sen. Johanns (R) 66 / 24

Senator Nelson is being threatened that if he doesn't vote for the Health Care bill, Obama will either size down or shut down the stategic air base in his state of Nebraska. This President needs to be impeached for threatening the security of this nation to get his health care bill through. Chicago thuggery at it's best.

    Johanns: Probe Offutt 'threat'

    By Joseph Morton
    WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Sen. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., and 19 other GOP senators today called for a hearing into reports that the Obama administration used the future of Offutt Air Force Base as bargaining chip in the health care debate, according to a press release by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., has flatly denied that Offutt came up in connection with the health care bill or any other piece of legislation. The White House also has described those reports as "absurd."

The group of Republican senators called for a hearing in a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., and the committee's top Republican Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"Various media reports have stated that the Obama Administration would put Offutt AFB in southeastern Nebraska on a future BRAC list because of a vote on healthcare reform," the senators wrote in the letter. "While we recognize the importance of Offutt AFB as the headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command and the approximately 10,000 individuals that work there, we feel that this installation should remain open or be closed on its own merits."

Nelson is a crucial vote in the health care debate. Conservative pundits such as columnist Michelle Malkin have cited anonymous Capitol Hill sources in writing that Nelson was threatened with closure of the base if he failed to support the pending health care legislation. Nelson says those reports are being spread by partisan sources eager to defeat the legislation.

White House Rebuts 'False' Report It Threatened Senator to Vote for Health Care

    FOXNews.com

The White House knocked down a report Wednesday that it threatened to close an Air Force base in Nebraska if that state's senator didn't cast what could be the crucial 60th vote needed to pass a health care bill in the Senate.

The White House knocked down a report Wednesday that it had threatened to close an Air Force base in Nebraska if that state's senior U.S. senator didn't cast what could be the crucial 60th vote needed to pass a health care bill in the Senate.

The Weekly Standard, citing an unnamed source, reported in a blog posting Tuesday that the White House threatened to place Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) list if Sen. Ben Nelson, a moderate Democrat who is seeking to insert tougher restrictions on abortion coverage in the bill, didn't cooperate.

But the White House dismissed the report Wednesday as nothing more than a partisan "rumor."

"This rumor is absolutely false, as the people spreading it well know," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in a written statement to Fox News. "This is nothing but a cynical, crass political game that is designed to maintain the status quo."

Senate Democratic leaders appear close to having the required 60 votes needed for passage after dropping a government-run insurance plan and a proposed Medicare buy-in from the bill to appease moderates like Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent from Connecticut.
