It appears a controversial plan may be in the works to transfer prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to military bases in San Diego County.

Marine commanders told Congressman Duncan Hunter defense officials toured the Pendleton Jail on Dec. 11. Hunter, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, has introduced a bill barring the transfer of Guantanamo prisoners to Camp Pendleton, or the brig at Miramar.

Hunter says moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to Camp Pendleton's brig would be a huge distraction to servicemen and servicewomen who are being trained to fight terrorism, and is an insult to the families they've left behind.

"There is no transparency, nobody's talking to Congress from the administration, nobody's talking to the DoD saying hey guys, here's what we have planned out, here's what we're looking at. No one's talking to us yet," Hunter said.

Retired Army Colonel David Epstein says Camp Pendleton is definitely not a place for those who have carried out aggressive acts against America, and says defense department officials eyeing the brig at Miramar should be looking elsewhere as well.

"They should be placed in an isolated area where security can be the main concentration of the people assigned to take care of them, and where demonstrations - if they take place - won't disrupt the life of the people living around the area," Epstein said.

One of the other concerns about housing the detainees in San Diego County is that it could make the area a much bigger target for terrorists crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

"That could happen, but along with everything else, why do we want to add this possibility to the problem," he said.

Other sites under consideration besides Camp Pendleton and Miramar are Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City and the U.S. Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility in Florence, Colorado.

Oh....well isn't this just a brilliant plan Let's paint a big ol' target on one of our military installations why don't they?

Just like gang members, cartel members, and others among the most dangerous in society, none of these individuals should be kept anywhere even remotely close to civilization, IMO.

These types of people need to be placed in some type of specially constructed, triple max security facility intended to house international prisoners of the same caliber, located out in the middle of nowhere to minimize, if not eliminate, the risk of attack or escape, and quite frankly, be guarded by military.

But hey....such a thing would make too much sense so no-can-do.

And no, I don't want to hear about their "human rights" from all of the liberal bleeding hearts. They all talk a good game but would be the first ones hiding under their beds and peeing their pants if any of these people ever escaped from a prison in their vicinity

I can just see a terrorist being held in miminum security at Pendelton breaking out, taking a fully armed tank, drive it north on I-5 10 miles then open up on the San Onofre nuclear power plant, causing it to melt down and creating a radiological disaster worse than Chernoble. A couple of rounds into the control and generator buildings is all it would take.

They're fine where they are! I think Gitmo should stay open (for now).

Coming from a person who is so brilliant, someone who campaigned on hope and change, someone who promised to close Gitmo, to now debate on just what to do with the detainees (terrorist for those with a brain) seems somewhat disappointing. All of these other people with their ideas need to get the heck out of the way and let Wonder Boy implement his long thought out plan on what to do! Afterall it is just a picnic and a piece of cake for those with a brain. Go Wonder Dog..uh,.. I mean Wonder Boy, show them fascists right wing idealogues just how it is supposed to be!

Perhaps Wonder Boy would consider putting these insurgents(?) these misunderstood detainees up on the third floor of the White House? Now that would surely show the world that Wonder Boy will indeed reach out and have dialouge with the misunderstood peoples of the world.
