Police Cruiser Hit by Gunfire, Crashes, Catches Fire
MILLIS, Mass. — Sep 2, 2015, 7:59 PM ET
A suburban Boston police cruiser has been hit by gunfire, crashed and caught on fire.
Police officers from several towns are looking for the man who shot at the Millis police car.
State police spokesman David Procopio says the cruiser crashed into a tree and caught fire Wednesday. The officer inside wasn't seriously hurt.
Police believe the shots were fired from a dark-colored pickup truck.
Millis Sgt. William Dwyer says a white man between the ages of 25 and 40 fired two or three shots at the officer, who fired two shots back. Dwyer has no details on how the incident started.
People nearby were asked to remain inside for several hours as police including SWAT officers scoured the wooded neighborhood along the Charles River.

Massachusetts police cruiser hit by gunfire; search underway for suspects
BY NINA GOLGOWSKI
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Wednesday, September 2, 2015, 6:06 PM
Law enforcement officials are seen carrying rifles as they walk along a street near where police say multiple shots were fired into a Millis police cruiser, in Millis, Mass., on Wednesday.
A manhunt is underway in Massachusetts after shots were fired at a police cruiser, causing the vehicle to crash into a tree and catch fire, authorities said.
The Millis Police cruiser was driving through town around 3 p.m. when it was hit by gunfire, possibly from a dark maroon pickup truck, state police said.
The officer was able to return fire, firing off two or three shots, before the vehicle caught fire, the Milford Daily News reported.
The suspect, identified by preliminary reports as a white male between the ages of 25 and 40, took off shortly after.
The officer was reportedly taken to Norwood Hospital for evaluation while state police have said that they're not immediately aware of any injuries.
With a massive search underway, residents within the town, located about 20 miles southwest of Boston, have been advised to take "shelter in place."
Meanwhile, a helicopter, state troopers and detectives, K9 units, crime scene technicians and ballistics technicians are aiding the hunt.
A high school senior, while glancing out a classroom window, claims she saw a pickup truck appearing to prowl around the area a few hours before.
"It's like they were positioning themselves," Brigit Hourigan, 17, told WCVB-TVof the vehicle which she said had two people inside as it was seen driving on and off the grass while slowly circling the driveway.
"I made eye contact with the guy," she said.
The shooting comes one day after an Illinois police officer was fatally gunned down by three suspects who remain on the loose.

Officer shot his own patrol car, Massachusetts police say
By Lawrence Crook, Ralph Ellis and Greg Botelho, CNN
Updated 5:07 PM ET, Thu September 3, 2015
A Massachusetts police officer lied when he said somebody shot at his patrol car.
(CNN)A police officer lied when he said somebody shot at his patrol car, causing it to crash and catch fire, said Millis, Massachusetts, police Sgt. William Dwyer on Thursday.
"We have determined that the officer's story was fabricated," Dwyer said. "Specifically that he fired shots at his own cruiser as part of a plan to concoct a story that he was fired upon."
Dwyer said the officer will be prosecuted. He was a dispatcher hired as a part-time officer and was training to become a full-time officer, Dwyer said.
Dwyer said the officer's name won't be released until charges are filed. He didn't say why the officer made up the story.
On Wednesday, the officer reported that a white man in a dark pickup truck fired shots at him, causing his patrol car to spin around, strike a tree and catch fire. The officer said he returned fire.
Police conducted an intensive search with officers from other law enforcement agencies, firefighters, police dogs and a Massachusetts State Police helicopter.
Also on Wednesday, somebody made a threatening call to a local middle school. City schools were locked down for the day and were closed all day Thursday. Police don't know if that threat and the cruiser incident are related.
Millis is a town of about 8,000 people located about 25 miles southwest of Boston.
