Shrimping Industry Struggling to Find Workers
Lower Valley Shrimping Industry Struggling to Find Workers

BROWNSVILLE - Companies say they're having a hard time finding people to work for them this shrimping season.
The shrimping industry is struggling to survive in the Lower Valley. Many fear there will be no future. Shrimpers say it isn't because there will be no shrimp. They say they're running out of finding good young fishermen.
Juan Reyes, a shrimp boat captain, has seen the problem first-hand.
"It's not hard work, but the people don't want to go out to shrimp for several weeks. Some will come, but after three days, they get sea sick and want to come home," says Reyes.
We talked to a few companies at the Port of Brownsville about this problem. They say it's easy to find Mexican nationals with visas to work. American citizens are a different story.
"We have a lot of good men that are green card holders. They are getting old and even the American citizens are getting old, but we are running out of good experienced fishermen," says Charles Burnell with Burnell Trawlers.
Those in the shrimping industry know it's a hurdle they must jump.
"There are going to be problems in the future. We need to have people to work or else this industry is going to die,â€NO AMNESTY

It's talking about young people not wanting to go out and be on a boat 24 hours a day 7 days a week for several weeks at a time because single or married young people like to have a social life, not spend their entire life at work. They didn't say they don't want t do the work because it doesn't pay enough.
