As the United States conducts airstrikes on ISIS in order to degrade their military, we are also building them up in the form of “humanitarian aid.” Not only are truckloads of food, medical supplies, and vaccines going to the Islamic State, but the distribution networks are paying off ISIS leaders in order for the convoys to enter the area. This additional money provided to the ISIS-controlled strongholds of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, provide yet another income stream for this militant group which goes to fund their terrorist activities.

Why are the United States and Western relief agencies funding ISIS? The argument being used by officials in Washington is that stopping aid would harm the civilians, since the Islamic State could easily cut off the food and supplies to the area. This could further be used as a propaganda tool against the West, since the militants could then blame the United States for their added hardship.
But the aid we are sending over is not only providing food and medical supplies for the civilians, but also for the fighters since they can take whatever they need before passing it on to the civilians.
The aid is further being used as a propaganda tool by ISIS, since the militants can be seen as saviors for the area, as they can now provide food and supplies to civilians, thereby winning the hearts and minds of their subjects. As recently stated in their online propaganda magazine:“The soldiers of Allah do not liberate a village, town, or city, only to abandon its residents and ignore their needs.”
People close to the situation are seeing other issues with this aid arriving to the area, as the recent mobile clinic set up by aid workers could be used to harm the United States. One unnamed aid worker stated:“A few months ago we delivered a mobile clinic for a USAID-funded NGO. A few of us debated the rights and wrongs of this. The clinic was earmarked for the treatment of civilians, but we all know that wounded ISIS fighters could easily be treated as well. So what are we doing here helping their fighters, who we are bombing, to be treated so they can fight again?”
It looks as though these militants have it made! Not only can they charge convoy fees for our supplies to come in, but the aid can go directly to their militants to build up their fighting force. And with the Islamic State being able to “provide for the people” with the help our food and supplies, the locals will praise the terrorist group for taking care of them.
