Magnitude 5.6 earthquake reported in Iran

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck eastern Iran on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter of the quake was 26 miles east of Qayen, Iran, according to the USGS.Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reports the quake hit South Khorasan province in eastern Iran near the border with Afghanistan at 20:38 local time Wednesday.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Fars says the quake caused panic and prompted residents of provincial capital Birjand to flee their homes. No other details were immediately available.
