NY Times Sunday crossword puzzles readers with swastika shape on Hanukkah: ‘How did this get approved’

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah began on Dec. 18 and will end the evening of Dec. 26

NewsGuild leaders and New York Times employees suggested further action if the paper does not negotiate in good faith.

The New York Times published a crossword puzzle on Sunday, the first day of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, that many readers thought was shaped like a Nazi Swastika.
No one involved with the puzzle seemed to notice. In a Times column about the Sunday crossword, Caitlin Lovinger wrote, "I love the geometry in this puzzle — so many stair steps! — and feel that it contributes to a certain evenness in the solve." Ryan McCarty, the puzzle’s constructor, described the design as a "fun whirlpool shape."
But The Times was criticized heavily on Twitter by people across the political spectrum for what they thought what was clear to see.

"[W]hy is The New York Times' crossword a swastika?" Daily Wire senior writer Ryan Saavedra asked in a tweet.

I know that the @nytimes crossword wasn’t intentionally laid out as a swastika so I guess the sin here is bad editing. How did this get approved without somebody noticing?

"Today’s New York Times crossword is um…making me nervous," Jewish Journal columnist Blake Flayton tweeted.
Sara Luterman, a reporter with the left-wing 19th News, asked, "Is it just me or does the @nytimes crossword look kind of swastika-y today?"

"It’s the first night of Hanukkah, so the NYT gives us a swastika crossword puzzle…," Aaron Lavinsky, a photojournalist with the Star Tribune, tweeted.

"Intentional swastika or not, the fact that the @nytimes @NYTGames would have a staff so insensitive to not catch it, is worthy of discussion & action. This is not getting the attention it deserves. #NeverAgain," said former Obama and Biden fundraiser Eric Ortner.
Kalman Yeger, a Democratic City Councilman who represents Borough Park, a predominantly Jewish area in Brooklyn, tweeted, "A hidden Happy Chanukah message in today's @nytimes crossword?"

Brian Robinson, a former New York Congressional candidate, tweeted ,"I know the @nytimes is not, how do I say it, the friendliness paper to Jewish folk (outside of the nutty far left self haters), but this subliminal crossword puzzle is NEXT LEVEL."

On the same weekend the Times published the disturbing crossword puzzle, its editorial board published a piece slamming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an extremist and warning that Israeli democracy is at risk. They described the incoming leader's return to power as "a significant threat to the future of Israel — its direction, its security and even the idea of a Jewish homeland."

Antisemitic hate crimes are up this year substantially - January 2022 saw a 300% increase over January 2021.

NY Times called out for ‘disgusting’ crossword puzzle that resembled Nazi swastika imagery – on Hannukah

(Natural News) Once again, The New York Times is showing its classic — and historic — anti-Semitism after publishing a crossword puzzle that bore a striking resemblance to the symbol of Nazi Germany.
Readers and social media users reacted with anger and disgust after seeing the design of the Times’ puzzle, even to a casual observer, strongly resembled a swastika.
Interestingly, the paper’s “Games” account responded to a similar design complaint in 2017, meaning that this has happened before.

“Yes, hi. It’s NOT a swastika. Honest to God. No one sits down to make a crossword puzzle and says, ‘Hey! You know what would look cool?'” the account noted.

But is that believable? Twice in a the span of a few years — especially with the paper’s history of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial?
Donald Trump Jr. slammed the puzzle as “disgusting,” writing Sunday on Twitter that “only the New York Times would get Hanukkah going with this as the crossword puzzle.”
His sister, Ivanka, and her husband, Jared Kushner, are both Jewish.
The UK’s Daily Mail noted further:
The son of the former president, like many others, cited the publication’s track record of siding against the predominantly Jewish nation of Israel in its long running conflict with neighboring Palestine.
Some pointed to an example seen in its issue just the day before – an OP-ED piece by the paper’s editorial board that was critical against the new Israeli government.
Trump Jr. went on to question the paper’s actions, asking how it would report on a similar instance if the tables had been turned.

“Imagine what they would do to someone who did this and was not ideologically aligned with them?” Trump Jr. wrote. “I’ll give them the same benefit of the doubt they would give those people… exactly zero.”

In May, conservative author and talk host Mark Levin, who has talked and written about this subject a lot, noted on his Fox News program that Americans during World War II were not responsive to the Holocaust involving European Jews because they were not told much about Hitler’s extermination efforts until at least 1944, after the allies invaded the continent. He then read from his most recent book, “Unfreedom of the Press,” during which he claimed that the New York Times “almost always” buried Holocaust-related news inside its pages.
“Surely the New York Times, with its wide reach, resources, access to foreign sources of information, reputation as the foremost newspaper in the country, large Jewish readership and its Jewish ownership would do everything possible to investigate and disclose the horror of Jewish genocide,” Levin said. “But the opposite was true.”
“The mass media treated the systematic murder of millions of Jews as though it were minor,” Levin charged, noting that even then-President Franklin Roosevelt (D) did not talk about what was taking place for nearly a year after news of the extermination became public in November 1942.
“It’s worse than fake news. It tried to take down an elected president, Donald Trump. It tried to push him out of office, supported both impeachments, supported the criminal investigation, still supports these various prosecutors who are investigating the former president. And on and on and on,” Levin added. “[It has also pushed] [t]he 1619 project, which seeks to undermine our nation’s history.”
