Jan. 3: RNC chairman candidates Reince Priebus, left, current chairman Michael Steele, Maria Cino, Saul Anuzis and Ann Wagner debate in Washington.
WASHINGTON -- Beleagured GOP Chairman Michael Steele on Friday dropped his bid stay atop the party for another two years after falling further behind top challenger Reince Priebus on following several rounds of voting.
Steele, whose tenure has been marked by controversy and embarrassment, realized he was fighting a losing battle. Now he is urging supporters to vote for Maria Cino.
Priebus, the Wisconsin Republican Party chairman, won the fourth round with 58 votes. Maria Cino moved into second place with 29. Steele and Ann Wagner both got 28 votes followed by Saul Anuzis with 24.
Ballots are being cast by 168 committee members. Eighty-five votes are needed for victory.

Steele steps down as RNC chair
Michael Steele, the first African-American chairman of the Republican National Committee, has stepped down.
He asked his supporters to back former acting Transportation Secretary Maria Cino to replace him.
Balloting for the chairmanship continues outside Washington. As of the fourth ballot, Wisconsin Party Chair Reince Preibus led with 58 votes. Cino was next with 29, followed by Steele, with 28; former Missouri party chair Ann Wagner with 28, and former Michigan Party chair Saul Anuzis with 24.
Steele had been criticized throughout his two year term and was chided for not being successful enough at raising funds. But he could point to Republican gains in Congress as a mark of his success.
With voters dropping their support of him, he decided to step aside.
"Two years, we had a good time," said Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland.
"It is what it is," he added.

If the RNC wants to raise a ton of cash, hire Sarah Palin as primary spokeswoman and a top notch financial manager that will trim expenses, reduce costs and effectively manage the money.
