Since officials are blaming the fire on an 'accident' related to the renovations...just imagine renovating one of the world's most historic landmarks then accidentally burning it to the ground.

At this point, firefighters attacking the blaze are treating it as an accident somehow related to the "massive" construction happening at the cathedral, which was being renovated. Police later confirmed that the fire was an accident linked to the renovation work.
If there's a silver lining, many of the historic statues were removed by crane just last night.
Meanwhile, the fact that the cathedral caught fire at the beginning of holy week, a time when catholic tourists have flocked to the city, added a layer of irony to the fire.
At this point, it looks like the cathedral's spire has been totally destroyed.

French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed a policy speech to attend to the disaster.

A spokesman for the cathedral said the fire began around 6:30 pm local time, or around 1:30 pm ET.

It's unclear how it started or what, exactly, is going on, but the historic Notre Dame cathedral caught fire on Monday, and photos and video circulating on social media suggest that conflagration has engulfed the historic monument.

The cause of the fire at the 856-year-old cathedral isn't yet clear - though officials said it could be linked to renovation work. Parts of the roof and the cathedral's skyline-definiing spire were alight, though the true extent of the blaze was difficult to discern. Construction on the cathedral began in 1163 and was completed in 1260. Today, it is the most visited tourist attraction in Paris, drawing 12 million visitors per year, beating out the Eiffel Tower. The cathedral is considered the finest example of French Gothic architecture.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted about the "terrible fire" and asked people to stay away: "A terrible fire is underway at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. The @PompiersParis are trying to control the flames. We are mobilized on the spot in close connection with the @dioceseparis. I invite everyone to respect the security perimeter."

The situation is a terrible tragedy as one of the most revered monuments in all of Catholicism looks like it could be completely destroyed, a historical tragedy that would be practically unrivaled in modern times.

ONE OF THREE women allegedly involved in a foiled plot in 2016 to blow up a car packed with gas canisters near the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris was today sentenced to eight years in prison by a French court for earlier offences.
Ines Madani, 22, was sentenced following a three-day trial during which she was accused of encouraging would-be jihadists to go to Syria and participate in attacks against France between March 2015 and June 2016….
Judge Isabelle Prevost-Desprez said that Madani was “recruited” by Oumar Diaw, also known as Abou Barrou, an influential jihadist of the Islamic State group.
She used different pseudonyms on social networks, pretending for example to be Abu Souleymane, a jihadist returned from Raqa to carry out attacks in France….
Madani’s lawyer, Laurent Pasquet-Marinacce, said her client, aged 18 at the time, was “a girl in search of recognition and love”….
Madani’s trial for trying to set fire to the car filled with six gas cylinders near Notre Dame will begin on 23 September.

A dozen Catholic churches have been desecrated across France over the period of one week in an egregious case of anti-Christian vandalism.

The recent spate of church profanations has puzzled both police and ecclesiastical leaders, who have mostly remained silent as the violations have spread up and down France.
Last Sunday, marauders set fire to the church of Saint-Sulpice — one of Paris’ largest and most important churches — shortly after the twelve-o’clock Mass.
Police have concluded that the fire was the result of arson and are now looking for possible suspects. The restoration of the church from the damage caused by the fire will reportedly cost several hundred million euros.
In Nimes (department of the Gard), near the border with Spain, the church of Notre-Dame des Enfants was desecrated in a particularly odious way, with vandals painting a cross with human excrement, looting the main altar and the tabernacle, and stealing the consecrated hosts, which were discovered later among piles of garbage.
Likewise, the church of Notre-Dame in Dijon, in the east of the country, suffered the sacking of the high altar and the hosts were also taken from the tabernacle, scattered on the ground, and trampled.
In Lavaur, in the southern department of the Tarn, the village church was assaulted by young men, who twisted one arm of a representation of the crucified Christ to make it appear that he was making an obscene gesture.
In the peripheries of Paris, in the department of Yvelines, several churches have suffered profanations of varying importance, in Maisons-Laffitte and in Houilles.
Although commentators have been reluctant to attach a particular religious or cultural origin to the profanations, they all share an evident anti-Christian character.
In recent months, anti-Semitic gangs have desecrated Jewish cemeteries, signing their actions with swastikas. In the case of the desecration of Catholic churches, the vandalism has spoken for itself: ridicule of the figure of Christ on the cross and desecration of major altars.
The Catholic hierarchy has kept silent about the episodes, limited themselves to highlighting that anti-Christian threat and expressing hope that politicians and police will get to the bottom of the crimes.
Reports indicate that 80 percent of the desecration of places of worship in France concerns Christian churches and in the year 2018 this meant the profanation of an average of two Christian churches per day in France, even though these actions rarely make the headlines.
In 2018, the Ministry of the Interior recorded 541 anti-Semitic acts, 100 anti-Muslim acts, and 1063 anti-Christian acts.

In February 10 churches in France were attacked in one week, causing some to fear increasing religious tensions in the migrant-friendly country.
The attacks, allegedly sponsored by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, saw 5 churches vandalized, attacked, or damaged in a one week span.
Roman Catholic publication La Croix International first reported that four churches were vandalized in a week period in February. The first church to be vandalized was in Houilles, France on February 4 at the church of St. Nicholas, where a statue of Mary was found broken into pieces.
The next attack occurred on the following day in Saint-Alain Cathedral in Lavaur, when the parish’s secretary discovered “the smoking remains of the tablecloth of the altar” and the church’s nativity scene. Fortunately the fire did not spread, but a cross and statue of the crucified Christ were also vandalized. The event led the town’s mayor, Bernard Carayon, to remark that “God will forgive. Not me.”

On February 6, police were called to a church in Nîmes, where a tabernacle was destroyed, and human excrement was used to smear a cross onto one of the church’s walls.
In nearby Côte-d’Or, a tabernacle was destroyed and a table cloth was soiled at the Church of Notre-Dame de Dijon on February 9.
On February 10, the church of St. Nicholas was again struck with vandalism, as it had its tabernacle destroyed by a man who would later admit to the crime.
More churches would be vandalized in the following days.

Today the Cathedral of Notre Dame is currently ablaze, as an accident relating to the renovation and construction of the building is suspected to be the cause.
While the event is not suspected to be caused by vandalism, social media users on Facebook are celebrating the devastation with “haha” reactions and comments calling the fire retribution for centuries old French colonization, with one user remarking “Allah is grand.”
