    'Superbug' Infection Follows Illegal Tattoos

    POSTED: 2:30 pm PDT June 22, 2006

ATLANTA -- Anyone getting a tattoo had better be careful about who's doing it.

Federal health officials said a "superbug" is turning up in people who've had body art done at illegal tattoo parlors.

Already, more than 40 people in Vermont, Ohio and Kentucky have come down with skin infections blamed on bacteria that resist antibiotics.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the infections have been traced to 13 unlicensed tattoo artists. In one case, a tattoo was applied using a homemade device fashioned from an ink-jet cartridge and guitar strings.

The superbug fights off the body's immune system and destroys tissue. In some cases, it can lead to pneumonia or even a painful flesh-destroying condition.

Health officials said all of the tattoo patients have recovered, including four who had to be hospitalized.

Although some of the best ink I have ever seen was done with a "Jailhouse" machine, It is without a doubt the most dangerous way to get Tattoo'd. And using inkjet ink? thats just plain stupid!. The chemicals alone in that stuff can make you sick. I doubt anyone with a brain would sit down and get Tattoo'd by anyone using Inkjet, let alone pay for it, especially when Tattoo shops are EVERYWHERE these days....things people do.....good God. Besides any REAL tattoo shop has to be inspected by the Health Dept, theres a Cert with the owners Picture that HAS to be displayed and up to date, as well as an operating autoclave and single use needles, if you go get ink, ask to see these things, if they're not willing to show you, turn around and leave. Pretty simple....you're going to wear that art for the rest of your life, do a little research first...
