A new audit shows the Texas Department of Public Safety may have wrongly issued thousands of driver’s licenses.
EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — An audit is out Thursday morning that shows the Texas Department of Public Safety may have wrongly issued thousands of driver’s licenses.
There may be thousands of drivers on Texas roads, with a valid driver’s license, who did not prove they live in Texas, didn’t provide a Social Security number, or haven’t passed a road test.
The report was released by the Texas State Auditor’s Office and says DPS “lacks control” to make sure applicants meet the qualifications for a license or ID card.
The audit tested 60 standard ID cards and licenses and shows that one-fourth lacked necessary documentation.
As a response, DPS says employees don’t receive an automatic notification when fields are left blank.
For example, not entering a Social Security number would not automatically notify the system.
DPS says each supervisor has to go one by one to make sure each driver’s license application is being correctly entered.
Moving forward, DPS officials say they are going to work on strengthening controls, but that they would need more management resources in order to do that
