New York Times: Daughters of foot doctor say he diagnosed Trump with bone spurs as 'favor' to Fred Trump

Updated 9:40 AM ET, Wed December 26, 2018

(CNN) The daughters of a Queens foot doctor say their late father diagnosed President Donald Trump with bone spurs to help him avoid the Vietnam War draft as a "favor" to his father Fred Trump, according to a new report Wednesday.

Dr. Larry Braunstein, a podiatrist who died in 2007, often told the story of providing Donald Trump with the diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels so he could be exempt from military service, his two daughters -- Dr. Elysa Braunstein and Sharon Kessel -- told the New York Times.

"It was family lore," Elysa Braunstein told the Times, adding that the story was "something we would always discuss" among family and friends.

The Times did not find documentation to help corroborate the family's account, who described themselves as Democrats who dislike Trump, and Elysa Braunstein was unsure whether her father ever examined Donald Trump.

The White House did not return the Times' request for an interview with the President nor respond to questions about his service record.

Dr. Braunstein rented his office in Jamaica, Queens, from Fred Trump in the 1960s, the Times reported, citing records. His two daughters told the Times that their father provided the diagnosis of bone spurs as a courtesy to the elder Trump.

"I know it was a favor," Elysa Braunstein told the newspaper, who added that the "small favor" got her father "access" to Fred Trump.

"If there was anything wrong in the building, my dad would call and (Fred) Trump would take care of it immediately," she told The Times.

Elysa Braunstein also told the newspaper that her father implied that Trump did not have a foot ailment.

In 1968, after receiving four deferments due to education, Donald Trump was diagnosed with bone spurs in his heels at the age of 22, seven years before the Vietnam War ended.

In a 2016 interview with The Times, Trump claimed that a doctor "gave me a letter -- a very strong letter -- on the heels" to provided to draft officials. In the interview, Trump couldn't recall the name of the doctor.

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

Funny! DemoQuacks throwing their own father under the bus to try to insinuate Fred Trump did something to keep his son out of Vietnam. 90% of parents in America were trying everything they could think of to keep their kids out of Vietnam, including the parents of kids and young people who wanted to go.

If this is true, Donald Trump was an adult, not a child. He knew if he had bone spurs or not. A man with true integrity would have faced his path with honer and not participated in such a scam. I'm not saying Trump is guilty of being part of a lie to avoid Uncle Sam's call to duty, but if he did do it ....... shame on him, his father, and the doctor.

I would strongly disagree with that disturbingly high number you obviously pulled out of nowhere in order to justify scamming our country. I realize Trump apologist have very few boundaries, but attempting to discredit such a large portion of our country's population to justify the possible wrongful act of one, two, or even three people is sitting the bar mighty low.

IMO, someone running for the highest office in the land should have no expectation of privacy where their medical condition is concerned. The same applies to someone actively serving as the President of the United States.

Besides all that, you'd be surprised at how many people and groups actually have access to your personal medical records. Just saying .....

Everyone running for President has and should have the same civil rights as anyone else in this country. That includes privacy (medical records, tax returns, attorney-client privilege, confidential communications), probable cause and due process to name a few. How can any American expect a President to protect their freedom, liberty and civil rights when you have tromped all over theirs?

Either Trump’s Daddy Helped Him Dodge Draft or ‘Bone Spurs’ Is the Medical Diagnosis for Cowardice: Report

It is well-known that Donald Trump suffers from the debilitating disease bitchniccaitis, which prevents him from performing presidential duties such as firing his staff in person or standing up to Vladimir Putin. Because of his illness, it took him nearly two years to visit U.S. soldiers in a war zone, and a recent flare-up of the ailment made him the first president since 2002 to not visit the troops on Christmas, NBC reports.

And while President Trump has repeatedly said he was ready to serve during the Vietnam war, a new report by the New York Times may explain how he managed to obtain a medical deferment that kept him from being drafted.

On Wednesday, the New York Times published an account of Elysa Braunstein, 56, and her sister, Sharon Kessel, 53. The two siblings revealed that their father, Dr. Larry Braunstein, was the New York City podiatrist who diagnosed Trump with bone spurs. The sisters say the diagnosis was a favor to Fred Trump, who was Braunstein’s landlord and Donald Trump’s father. According to Braunstein’s daughters, the physician rented office space in a Queens, N.Y., building owned by the elder Trump during the 1960s.

“I know it was a favor,” said Dr. Elysa Braunstein, noting that her father implied that Trump did not actually have the calcium deposits that indicate bone spurs. “But did he examine him? I don’t know.”

“What he got was access to Fred Trump,” she said, explaining that her father’s rent rarely increased. “If there was anything wrong in the building, my dad would call and Trump would take care of it immediately. That was the small favor that he got.”

It is important to note, however, that Braunstein’s diagnosis alone wouldn’t have summarily excused Trump from the draft. But the daughters say one of their father’s closest friends, their uncle Manny, may have also helped Trump acquire a deferment. Dr. Manny Weinsten was also a podiatrist who may have had ties with the draft board, as many physicians did at that time.

Records show that Weinstein, who is deceased, moved into a building owned by Fred Trump the exact year Donald received his medical deferment, which is probably just a coincidence.

For years, Trump maintained he was not drafted because he just happened to have a high draft number. Then he said he had bone spurs, dismissing the notion that he dodged the draft.

In all, Trump received five deferments for the Vietnam war. Four were for education and one was for medical reasons—bone spurs. Despite his handicap, Trump managed to play intramural squash, tennis and football.

He has also managed to play at least 154 rounds of golf as president and has visited a golf course about once every 4.5 days.

If you know anyone affected by bitchniccaitis for more than four hours, please get them to a doctor immediately.
