South Dakota Sen. John Thune announced today that he won’t seek the 2012 Republican nomination for president, although early polling barely found him on the radar.
The two major polls so far this month have put Mike Huckabee on top (20% in the Public Policy Polling, 21% in the CNN poll), followed by Mitt Romney (17% and 18%), Sarah Palin (15% and 19%), and Newt Gingrich (12% and 10%).
The survey by Public Policy Polling, funded by Democratic interests, also showed that 51% of GOP primary voters believe that President Barack Obama was not born in the United States.
Both the PPP and FOX News show Obama leading in all matchups with Republicans, although PPP shows the races closer.
Here’s the PPP rundown, with Obama’s margin of advantage preceding the name of the challenger:
+3 v. Huckabee
+5 v. Romney
+9 v. Gingrich
+12 v. Palin
Here’s the matchups by FOX News, which this month has not polled on the GOP primary:
+7 v. Romney
+8 v. Huckabee
+20 v. Gingrich
+21 v. Palin
