Top Senate Democrats Are Urging Trump to Not Meet With Putin One-on-One

A group of prominent Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Charles Schumer, are urging President Donald Trump to not go to the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on his own. A day after several Democrats called on Trump to outright cancel the meeting with Putin in Helsinki following the latest round of indictments by special counsel Robert Mueller, on Saturday a smaller group seemed to want to put forward a compromise considering that it’s clear the president has no intention of canceling the sit-down.

“If you insist on meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday, we write to urge that you include senior members of your team and not meet one-on-one with Mr. Putin, as reportedly planned,” the group of eight senators, including Dianne Feinstein and Patrick Leahy, wrote. In the letter, the Democrats also say that if the president isn’t “prepared to make Russia’s attack on our election the top issue you will discuss, then you should cancel the Helsinki summit.”

If the meeting does move forward, the Democrats expressed hope that the president “will use the opportunity … to advance a well-coordinated U.S. message, supported by senior leaders in your own administration.” In order for that to be successful “you must rely on the expertise and the experts of the State Department, Defense Department, CIA and other U.S. government agencies—not wing it on your own.”

On Friday, Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee sent a letter to Trump calling on him to outright cancel the meeting.

And it isn’t just Democrats who are wary about a one-on-one between Trump and Putin. “President Trump must be willing to confront Putin from a position of strength and demonstrate that there will be a serious price to pay for his ongoing aggression towards the United States and democracies around the world. If President Trump is not prepared to hold Putin accountable, the summit in Helsinki should not move forward,” Sen. John McCain said in a statement Friday.

The White House has made it clear the summit is moving forward. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday night the meeting should go ahead as planned. “I think it’s very important that they meet,” Pompeo told reporters. “I am confident that President Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin will put America in a better place.”

Trump and Putin are going to have a wonderful time. I think this meeting will be historic, they will talk about things that have never been talked about, contemplate solutions that heretofore were never even explored or contemplated, I hope they talk about medicine (Russia has some very good medicine that's cheap and works really well, actually cures stuff), they'll talk about Syria, Iran, Terrorism, North Korea, Sanctions, Trade, Nuclear Disarmanent, Cuba, WTO, G8, Crimea, and a whole long list of stuff, good stuff, issues that need to be resolved, maybe even Afghanistan and possibly an alliance agreement. It's all possible.

The Russians are more like Americans than half the people we deal with, so it's a whole new day that could be coming our way. The Russians are really smart, we'll like them a lot, once we have the freedom to do so. Funny isn't it, that we're supposed to be the leaders of the free world, yet we're the ones imprisoned from knowing one of the most important populations of people on the planet, like the Russians? A people to whom we owe our own freedom and they owe US for theirs?! We're allies, always have been, time for the truth to come out!!!

Of course this is just killing the DemoQuacks. So squirm you sicko liars, squirm, squirm, squirm. I'm loving every minute of watching you writhe with the possibility of peace and prosperity with Russia and North Korea, all in the same year. Maybe your heads will explode and Fox News will video it for US. I would love to see that.

    .

I just hope Putin ask Trump why he is allowing the Invasion of his own country, perhaps advises him to make that a top priority as soon as he gets back home.

Oh yes, I hope he does, too!! It would be the Russian Thing to do!! I can hear Putin now, "out of curiosity, why do you allow that?" I'm sure the Russians have been mystified all these years watching US struggle with if not succumb to this problem. And of course, Trump would LOVE listening to someone who sees this issue the same way he does. And Trump will ask, "what do you do to stop this"? And Putin will say, "we shoot 'em as spies or stuff 'em in labor camps." DUH!!!

Hey, this could be why the DemoQuacks hate Putin!!

You may be on to something here.

You mean the way Trump used this as his top campaign issue and pretended to be on the side of the citizens, only to either ignore or even worse, go the other direction once elected.

No, not at all, that is certainly not my view of the situation, not one bit. But if that's how you see it, whatever.

The difference is many people in different countries want to come here. Russia doesn't have that problem because many of its people want to escape Russia.

Like Kim Jung-un, Putin can't be trusted and the majority of people in this country, especially Republicans, know this. I think you've been hoodwinked. Of course it's not surprising .... you've been praising Putin and Russia ever since Trump started his lovefest with Putin during his campaign for President.

I've wanted a better relationship with Russia since I was in college and studied the situation. Putin has nothing to do with it. He just happens to be the President of Russia at this time.
