VEGAS BUSINESS OWNER FIRES 22 EMPLOYEES AFTER OBAMA VICTORY
by TONY LEE8 Nov 2012,
After President Barack Obama won reelection, a Las Vegas business owner fired 22 employees because he feared he could no longer keep up with the costs that would be imposed on his business due to regulations such as Obamacare.
The business owner, who asked to remain anonymous, called into 100.5 KXNT and said “elections have consequences” and that “at the end of the day, I need to survive.”
“I’ve done my share of educating my employees. I never tell them which way to vote. I believe in the free system we have, I believe in the right to choose who they want to be president, but I did explain as a business owner that I have always put my employees first," the business owner said. "I always made sure that when I went without a paycheck that [I] made sure they were paid. And I explained that I always put them first and unfortunately I’m at a point where I’m being forced to have to worry about me and my family now and a business that I built from just me to 114 employees."
The business owner said that he tried to explain to his employees a month ago that " if Obama gets in office that the regulations for Obamacare are gonna hurt our business, and I’m gonna have to make provisions to make sure I have enough money to cover the payroll taxes."
The business owner said he warned his employees, most of whom are Hispanic, of his concerns before the election, but now he unfortunately had to be "proactive" in firing 22 employees "to make sure that my business is gonna thrive and I’m gonna be around for years to come."
"I have to build up that nest egg now for the taxes and regulations that are coming my way," the business owner said. "The Dow alone lost 314 points today. There’s a tsunami coming and if you didn’t think this election had consequences, just wait.”

Momentive Inc. plans temporary layoffs for 150
Reduction in demand cited

About 150 workers at Sistersville's Momentive Performance Materials plant will be temporarily laid off later this month, officials said this week.
Citing a reduction in customer demand and a weak economy, the company will lay off workers for a two week period beginning Nov. 12 and ending Nov. 25, with workers returning to the job Nov. 26. According to John Scharf, spokesperson for Momentive Performance Materials Inc., temporary layoffs due to reduced demand are commonplace in manufacturing.
"There are slow downs like this at various times, where we don't receive many orders as other times of the year," he said. "The last time we had a layoff like this was 1975, but it was a different company back then."
Momentive employs 410 salaried and hourly workers at the plant, which produces silicon-based products that are then used by various industries, including automotive, health care and electronics. Scharf said demand is low from some of the largest users of Momentive's products, mainly in automotive, residential construction, textiles and furniture.
"We're always looking at what we can do and evaluating our business conditions to remain competitive, and that is a key component of any effective business plan," he said.
Scharf said a number of factors determined which workers would be laid off, starting with the mandated safety and compliance standards. Additionally, the company's agreement with the worker's union, as well as what areas the decreased demand effect most, are taken into consideration, Scharf said.
Some systems at the plant will continue to work during the layoff period, while others will be idled. Scharf said special benefits will be made available to assist employees affected by the layoff, including income extension aid as well as government-provided unemployment funds and continued medical and dental benefits for employees and their dependents. Scharf said as of now, Momentive is not considering making more permanent layoffs.

W-B officials to announce mandatory layoffs
BY CHRISTOPHER HONG (STAFF WRITER)
Published: November 8, 2012
Wilkes-Barre city employees will know by the end of the week if their jobs are safe from furloughs during the final six weeks of the year, city officials said Wednesday.
In October, the city asked its nearly 300 employees to take voluntary furloughs to patch a $2 million deficit. But the number of employees who accepted them by last Friday's deadline was not enough to solve the city's budget woes, forcing the city to resort to mandatory furloughs, city spokesman Drew McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said officials are still determining how they can reduce the work force without diminishing services. The city will make a public announcement by Friday, McLaughlin said.

Murray Energy confirms layoffs at three subsidiaries
- By Ryan Eldredge and NEWS9
- Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012
Steubenville, OH —
NEWS9 got confirmation that Murray Energy Corporation and its subsidiaries will be laying off more than 150 employees.
The company is citing President Barack Obama's administration as the main reason why the layoffs were made.
In a letter given to employees, Bob Murray, company president, claimed several other reasons why this is being done. Specifically, he cited drastically reduced economic activity, reduced electric power consumption, total destruction of the coal industry by as early as 2030 and the enactment of twelve regulations pending from the Obama administration.
Here's how the layoffs break down:
102 people are being laid off at Murray's Utah Energy Incorporated, in Utah.
54 are from Murray's American Coal Company, which has holdings in Illinois and Ohio.
Seven are from the Kanawha Transportation Center in Wheeling.
There were also some small reductions at a few other subsidiaries as well.
