An employee has been suspended and protests have sprouted outside a Naperville gas station Wednesday after video showing a confrontation between a cashier and group of Hispanic women went viral on social media.
Carolina Buitron said she and her family, some of whom were visiting from Mexico, were victims of discrimination when they stopped at a gas station for chips. The family said they were speaking Spanish when the cashier asked them to leave because they were “illegals.”
"He started asking about my cousins, if they were illegal, family or friends, are they adopted," Buitron said, noting that she then pulled out her cell phone and started recording.
Video footage of the cashier was posted to social media and has since been viewed more than 400,000 times. Though the video does not show the cashier calling the family “illegals” or refusing service, it shows him asking the group if they are citizens and telling them “ICE will come.”

A second video shows the cashier and another customer telling the group “you have no rights.”
Mobil did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago's and Telemundo Chicago’s requests for comment. Bucky’s, which operates the store, said the employee has been suspended "pending an investigation."
"The comments of this associate are not reflective of the core values of Bucky's Convenience Stores," a spokesperson for Bucky's said in a statement. "We are aware of the situation and are managing this personnel issue. We take this matter seriously and strive to ensure that all customers are treated with respect."

A manager of a Burger King restaurant in Eustis, Florida, was involved in a confrontation with two unidentified women who were upset he was speaking Spanish to another employee. It is unknown what happened before or after the recording began.

Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico said area police have reviewed the video and are "looking into it."
"Let me be abundantly clear: hate has no home here in Naperville. Quite frankly, this type of behavior has no place in society at large," he wrote on Facebook Wednesday. "Our city prides itself on being open and inclusive to all. Civility towards each other is an important component of being a global citizen, and I urge everyone in our community to showcase the kindness, compassion, and good decorum that our residents are known for and that our world needs more of."
Separate groups stood outside the west suburban Mobil gas station on Washington Street, some holding signs that read “Build the Wall” and others that read “boycott racism.”

President Trump appears to be doubling down on a weekend Twitter tirade that is being denounced as a racist attack on four Democratic congresswomen known as "the Squad." The president tweeted they should "go back to the broken and crime infested places from which they came." The tweets drew condemnation from Democrats and Republicans alike.

Congressman Raja Kristhnamoorthi addressed the footage Wednesday, telling MSNBC "this is the type of language the president propels and normalizes and it’s unacceptable."
Earlier this week, the Democratic-led U.S. House voted to condemn President Donald Trump's "racist comments" against four congresswomen of color, who he tweeted should "go back" to their home countries. The president later insisted he hasn't "a racist bone in my body" and that his tweets were "NOT racist."
Additional protests were planned for later Wednesday afternoon outside the gas station. The family said they're asking for an apology from the clerk.

Wednesday, July 17, 2019 10:44PMNAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- Protests were held outside of a gas station Wednesday in the western suburbs after video of an employee questioning Hispanic customers' citizenship status went viral.

Protesters are calling on the Bucky's Convenience Store's owner to fire the store clerk for the comments that many have deemed racist.


After a bike ride Tuesday, the Fernanda sisters, who are visiting from Mexico, and other relatives stopped at the gas station. One of their cousins from Naperville, Indira Buitron, 15, went inside to buy a bag of chips. Indira said the male clerk looked at her family waiting outside and asked her if her Mexican cousins were legal.

"I was really confused on why he wanted to know if they are illegal or not, so when I got out of the gas station I told my mom," Indira said.

Another Naperville cousin, Carolina Buitron, then went inside to confront the clerk.

"I asked him, oh so you want to be a racist. I was like that's not OK. He said you need to leave; I said I don't need to leave. He said I'm American; I said I'm American too, I was born here," Carolina said.

The confrontation escalated, the clerk told the family they need to go back to their country and made threats about calling ICE.

The exchange prompted Wednesday's protest with strangers coming out in support of the family.


"I was mortified that this employee felt it was OK for him to speak to anyone in that manner," said Liz Albert, a Wheaton resident.





The clerk's comments come on the heels of President's Trump's racist tweets telling some congressional women of color to go back to the countries they come from.

Trump supporter Bob Ahlgren thought the gas station protest was about that incident until he learned what the clerk said to the family.

"I don't disagree with them now that I know what is going on. If that was my place and employee and he disrespected people like that I'd lay him off too," Ahlgren said.

Bucky's released a statement regarding the incident:
"The comments of this associate are not reflective of the core values of Bucky's Convenience Stores. We are aware of the situation and are managing this personnel issue."


The store has not released any information about how the clerk will be disciplined.

The Naperville Police Department is investigating the incident. They released a statement regarding the incident:
"The Naperville Police Department has reviewed the social media video of an incident that occurred at the Bucky's Gas Station located at 1576 S. Washington St. in Naperville. We will continue to investigate the matter as well as monitor any related activities occurring in Naperville."
