Trump Supporters Join Thousands at Free Tommy Robinson Rally

‘Free Tommy Robinson’ Rally Draws Trump Supporters

Thousands of people, including President Donald Trump supporters, turned out on Saturday for a day of protest to free jailed British Activist, Tommy Robinson.

Police estimate 6,000 to 8,000 Robinson supporters rallied on Saturday, iNews reported, many of whom were seen wearing “MAGA” hats and flying the U.S. flag, one day after the anti-Trump protest at Parliament Square in London, which included the highly publicized “baby Trump” float.

“Oh Tommy Tommy, Tommy Tommy Tommy Tommy Robinson,” his supporters chanted throughout the event, Fox News reported.

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested for reporting on a Muslim gang accused of grooming and raping a teenaged girl. He was barred from reporting on the case while under probation for a similar case, even if it was “fair, accurate, and contemporaneous” reporting.

Robinson was sentenced to 13 months in prison for “contempt of court” on May 25. Tens of thousands of his supporters and free speech activists protested following the sentencing around the world, including U.S., Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. (RELATED: Tommy Robinson To Appeal 13-Month Jail Sentence)

The judge in Robinson’s trial issued a gag order on May 25, barring British media outlets from reporting on Robinson’s arrest, which was lifted May 29

There have been a number of protests demanding Robinson’s release. One occurred on June 9, where counter protesters arrived with signs that read, “Fry Tommy,” playing off the “Free Tommy” rally’s title, The Daily Caller News Foundation reported.

Robinson is a former leader of the English Defense League, which recevied criticism from the British Criminology Conference in 2010 over being “Islamophobic” for their position against Islam and Muslim immigration.

“We have risen from the English working class to act, lead and inspire in the struggle against global Islamification,” the EDL’s mission statement reads.

The EDL’s concerns over Islamification come from the U.K.’s immigration policies, which if left in place, would triple the Muslim population by 2050, according to Pew Research.

Sam Brownback, the U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, lobbied for Robinson’s release in a June meeting with U.K. Ambassador to the United States Sir Kim Darroch, Reuters reported.
