Two more arrests made in Edinburg municipal election case

The city of Edinburg has issued a statement following the arrest of city secretary Ludivina Leal.

Leal, who was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 3, is facing one count of illegal voting.

"The accusation against her is not connected to operations at City Hall nor as her role as an appointed employee," says the city in their statement.


Leal is currently being held at the Hidalgo County Jail.

"We are aware of the events involving the City Secretary.

We wish her and her family well as they go through the legal process.


Services provided to our residents by the City Secretary department and City Hall continue as normal. Our focus remains on continuing to provide excellent customer service to the residents of Edinburg."

Two more individuals have been arrested in connection to the 2017 Edinburg municipal election.

Ludivina Leal, city secretary, and Alyssa Cano have each been charged with one count of illegal voting after they were arrested and booked into county jail.


Leal’s and Cano’s arrests comes after the District Attorney already confirmed another 13 indictments in relation to this case.


Trial for Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina, who is at the center of this case and is facing 11 counts of illegal voting, is expected to begin in December.
