White House Doctor Says Trump Is In 'Excellent' Physical, Cognitive Health

White House Doctor Says Trump Is In 'Excellent' Physical, Cognitive Health

President Trump is in excellent health with "no indication" of "any cognitive issues" — but he could afford to lose a few pounds and start exercising over the coming year, according to the president's physician.

Dr. Ronny Jackson, a Navy rear admiral who directs the White House medical unit, conducted Trump's annual physical last Friday. He told reporters on Tuesday that the president's cardiac health is strong and that there are no concerns about any memory or cognitive issues.

"I found no evidence that the president has any issues whatsoever with his thought process," Jackson told reporters during Tuesday's White House briefing.

The tabloid-style book Fire and Fury by journalist Michael Wolff, published this month, led to speculation about Trump's mental fitness for office. Trump responded to the criticism by calling himself a "very stable genius."

Jackson said on Tuesday that Trump asked him to perform the cognitive exam, which the doctor had not planned to do, having deemed it unnecessary. Jackson said Trump performed "exceedingly well" and is "very sharp."

Jackson said the president enjoyed good health despite a subpar diet and no exercise routine.

"It's called genetics," Jackson said. "Some people just have great genes. I told the president if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years he might live to be 200."

Jackson also noted that Trump has abstained from alcohol and tobacco for his entire life, which contributed to his relatively good health.

Trump, 71, is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 239 pounds, Jackson said, which is classified as overweight and is 1 pound away from being obese, according to the NIH's body mass index calculator.

Jackson said he will work with Trump to exercise more over the coming year, to eat better and lose between 10 and 15 pounds.

Trump does take Crestor to lower his cholesterol, daily aspirin for heart health, Propecia for male pattern baldness, a skin cream for rosacea and a daily multivitamin. His blood tests and other vitals were all normal.

Jackson said that there is no reason Trump wouldn't be able to complete his first term healthwise, in addition to a second term if re-elected.

During the presidential campaign, Trump's longtime personal physician, Harold Bornstein, famously declared that Trump would be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency." Trump released his health history in 2016 on controversial TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz's show.

It was sad watching the press's disappointment that our President is healthy and fit. What has our country come to when our mainstream media is hoping for illness or mental impairment in someone? Evil people.

This article doesn't mention it, but the President had a perfect score on his cognitive test, 30 out of 30.

The President is overweight and doesn't exercise much, like most Americans

    Story highlights

President Donald Trump is a pound shy of being considered obese, say the results of his latest physical
The majority of American adults are overweight or obese and don't get enough exercise

(CNN)President Donald Trump's doctor, Dr. Ronny Jackson, characterized the president's health as "excellent," but like the majority of Americans, Trump is overweight and he doesn't get enough exercise.

The President weighs 239 pounds. That means he's gained 3 pounds over the last year, according to his last official records. At 6 feet, 3 inches tall, Trump had a body mass index, or BMI, that puts him in the "overweight" range, according to the National Institutes of Health's online BMI calculator. Being overweight is simply defined as a person whose weight is higher than what is considered a normal weight adjusted for height. The President is one pound shy of being considered obese, according to these calculations.

He is not alone. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, more than one in three adults were considered to be overweight and more than one in three were considered obese. That means the percentage of adults age 20 and older who are overweight or obese is 70.7%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

BMI, however, is considered by some experts too limited a measure, since this calculation doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. It's the fat, rather than the weight, that hurts your health. A better way to measure obesity is an X-ray, which can distinguish between fat and other innards. Or some hospitals use a bioelectrical impedance analysis, which runs an electrical current through body tissue to determine fat composition. Even measuring waist circumference is thought to be a better measure of fat than BMI. None of those tests was performed. A doctor could even eyeball it and if the patient's waist is bigger than the hips, the risk of premature death is considered much higher for that person than someone whose waist circumference is smaller.

Jackson said he will work with Trump to design an exercise routine and eating program that will help him get a better handle on his weight. The President said he would like to lose some, according to Jackson.

The President gets a lot more exercise than people are giving him credit for, because he's on the move all the time, on his feet, standing here, walking there, catching planes and helicopters, moving through that big White House, going to meetings, he's constantly on the move, and that is activity and that is exercise, which is why he's so healthy.

Also, he enjoys good food, basic food, meat and potatoes type food and nice desserts and ice cream. This makes him happy and satisfied. This is very important to good mental health. Hungry unsatisfied people are usually authoritarian wanting others to suffer with them, unhappy and mean. Trump is happy, satisfied and nice. If he can lose some weight without jeopardizing or compromising his happiness, satisfaction and personality, then he should, but if it has the opposite effect, then he should be himself.

Exclusive: Bornstein claims Trump dictated the glowing health letter

By Alex Marquardt and Lawrence Crook III, CNN

Updated 6:11 AM ET, Wed May 2, 2018

(CNN)When Dr. Harold Bornstein described in hyperbolic prose then-candidate Donald Trump's health in 2015, the language he used was eerily similar to the style preferred by his patient.

It turns out the patient himself wrote it, according to Bornstein.

"He dictated that whole letter. I didn't write that letter,"
Bornstein told CNN on Tuesday. "I just made it up as I went along."

The admission is an about face from his answer more than two years when the letter was released and answers one of the lingering questions about the last presidential election. The letter thrust the eccentric Bornstein, with his shoulder-length hair and round eyeglasses, into public view.

White House and source deny Trump's ex-doctor was subject of 'raid'

"His physical strength and stamina are extraordinary," he crowed in the letter, which was released by Trump's campaign in December 2015. "If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency."

The missive didn't offer much medical evidence for those claims beyond citing a blood pressure of 110/65, described by Bornstein as "astonishingly excellent." It claimed Trump had lost 15 pounds over the preceding year. And it described his cardiovascular health as "excellent."

The White House didn't respond to a request for comment about Bornstein's claim.

Later, as questions mounted over the health both of Trump and his rival Hillary Clinton, Bornstein offered a more businesslike assessment, listing things such as Trump's height, weight and prescription medications.

He later told CNN's Drew Griffin he'd dashed off the first letter as he was seeing patients.

"I was just rushed for time," he said in September 2016. "I had people to see."

He insisted then that the words were his own.

"Did I really write that letter? Yeah," he said.

Now, as Bornstein re-enters the spotlight claiming Trump's ex-bodyguard Keith Schiller robbed his office when Schiller retrieved Trump's medical records, the story behind the letter is becoming clearer.

"That's black humor, that letter. That's my sense of humor," he said. "It's like the movie 'Fargo': It takes the truth and moves it in a different direction."

He said Trump read out the language as Bornstein and his wife were driving across Central Park.

"(Trump) dictated the letter and I would tell him what he couldn't put in there," he said. "They came to pick up their letter at 4 o'clock or something."
