How Isis have rampaged towards the capital: A blow by blow account of how Islamist militants outnumbered 20-to-1 by the army cut through huge swathes of Iraq

    Who are ISIS?

The Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) grew out of Al Qaeda In Iraq, a militant group that emerged in the chaos engulfing the country after the 2003 invasion.
They rebranded themselves after the Syrian uprising, attracting foreign fighters and controlling areas with extreme brutality, such as beheadings and crucifixions.
Now even Al Qaeda thinks they are too violent.

    What do they want?

A calpihate – a single Islamic state spread across large chunks of Syria and Iraq, based on the harshest interpretation of Sharia law. It includes ordering women to stay at home, amputating the hands of thieves, destroying religious shrines, and outlawing music.

    Where are they headed?
Iraq has been spiralling back into chaos this year after ISIS first captured Fallujah then fought for control of Samarra and organised prison breaks.
Yet, the world was caught by surprise on Tuesday when the fanatics seized Mosul, Iraq’s second city. Then they took Saddam Hussein’s birthplace of Tikrit and drove south towards the capital Baghdad.

    What about the Kurds?

After being gassed by Saddam and repressed by Turkey, their semi-autonomous republic developed into a rare zone of stability in this region over the past decade, drawing significant foreign investment from oil firms.
Their well-drilled Peshmerga forces quickly grabbed the oil city of Kirkuk last week and are a vital bulwark against militants.

How Britain carved up Middle East

Many believe Iraq’s problems date back a century to when British and French officials carved up the Middle East after the First World War.

The modern-day country corresponds roughly to the ancient kingdom of Mesopotamia, but the borders drawn up for the British mandate took no account of local religious and tribal divisions.

Some argue there can only be peace when these historic anomalies are rectified by carving the country into three distinct nations.

    ISIS FORCES

They have about 12,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria, including 500 Europeans and 2,500 from other areas such as Pakistan and Chechnya.

They have support from some criminal groups and Sunni moderates, plus huge amounts of captured US-supplied arms and £250 million in seized cash.

    FIGHTERS: 12,000
    HELICOPTERS: 6 (captured Black Hawks)
ISIS SUPPORTERS: They have received covert funding from supporters in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Cash has also flowed through Kuwait, and Turkey may have sent arms and money.

    IRAQI FORCES

The Iraqi government has almost one million security personnel under its control, who are US-trained and equipped.
These include 270,000 soldiers, yet they abandoned Mosul without firing a shot.
Nobody knows why they were not ordered to fight Isis, but there is speculation some senior officers and former Saddam loyalists may sympathise with them.

    SOLDIERS: 270,000

    TANKS: 350

    AIRCRAFT: 210

GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS: In one of the strangest alliances in history, both Iran and the U.S. – until recently ‘the Great Satan’ to Tehran – could end up intervening to prop up the Iraq regime.
They would be backed by Western states, including Britain, with China and Russia, a supporter of President Bashar Assad, who is fighting ISIS in Syria.

    THE SUNNIS

    Who are they?

Sunnis belong to the largest branch of Islam. They see themselves as orthodox, following a schism from a dispute over who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad after his death in 632.

    Where are they?

In most places where there are Muslims, since they comprise 85 per cent of the faith’s 1.6 billion adherents worldwide.
Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Gulf States are all Sunni, with a sizeable majority in Syria.

    What about Iraq?

About a third of Iraqis are Sunni, concentrated largely in the north.
Yet all the rulers have come from their ranks since Iraq’s emergence as a modern state almost a century ago.
They dominated under Saddam, although his regime was secular.

    THE SHIA

    Who are they?

The smaller and more Messianic branch of Islam, the Shia sprung originally from a political faction pushing for the right of the Prophet Muhammad’s son-in-law and his descendants to lead their community.

    Where are they?

They are the majority in Iran, their global power base, but also in Azerbaijan, Bahrain and Yemen. It is estimated there are about 150 million worldwide, with some 150,000 in Britain and large communities in Afghanistan, India, Lebanon and Pakistan.

    What about Iraq?

They make up the majority, but for decades were kept from power. Both prime ministers since the fall of Saddam have been Shia.
The first government was secular, but under the blundering Nouri al-Maliki they have faced discrimination and been increasingly marginalised.

Will there be air strikes by the U.S.?

President Barack Obama has ruled out sending troops back to Iraq but kept open ‘other options’.
US military chiefs say they could start drone and aircraft strikes within 24 hours from bases such as Incirlik, in Turkey, which enforced no-fly zones against Saddam in the 1990s. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George H W Bush is also close to the Persian Gulf, holding more than 50 attack aircraft.

Option: Air strikes with drones are one of the options the U.S. is considering

Leaders locked in a deadly power struggle

    ABU BAKR AL-BAGHDADI, ISIS LEADER

There are only two confirmed photographs of the man seen as the world’s most feared jihadist. One was taken when he was caught by US troops in 2005 and held captive for four years.

After his release, the 43-year-old ex-preacher – who claims to be a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad and was radicalised by the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq – turned Al Qaeda’s local franchise into a force feared for its mix of savagery and smartness.

Born in Samarra, so little is known of him, he is called ‘the invisible jihadist’.

    NOURI MALIKI, IRAQ PRIME MINISTER

A Shia dissident who fled execution under Saddam Hussein, but then as newly-elected prime minister, signed the dictator’s own death sentence in 2006.

The 63-year-old’s incompetent and sectarian rule has driven some moderate Sunnis into supporting the militants, purging them from government, cracking down on peaceful protests and using the judiciary to silence rivals.
He has recently become even closer to Iran, concentrating power in Shia hands.

It looks like the US is about to lose another embassy.

U.S. to Evacuate Many Staff Members From Baghdad Embassy

ERBIL, Iraq — The American Embassy in Baghdad plans to temporarily evacuate a substantial number of its personnel this week and to increase security at the embassy in the face of a militant advance that rapidly swept from the north toward the capital, the State Department announced on Sunday.
The embassy, a beige fortress on the banks of the Tigris River within the heavily-secured Green Zone, where Iraqi government buildings are also located, has the largest staff of any United States Embassy.
The exact number of people being evacuated was not clear Sunday. The embassy would remain open, according to a statement from the department’s spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, and many of its approximately 5,500 staff members would stay in Baghdad.
Many staff members who are leaving — the statement called it “relocating” — will be flown to Amman, Jordan, where they will continue their work at the embassy there, the statement said. Others will be shifted from Baghdad to consulates here in Erbil, in the northern Kurdish region, and in Basra, in the south, which are not now under threat by the militants.
Other Americans in Iraq, particularly contractors working for companies that had been training the Iraqi military on weapons systems purchased from the United States, have already been evacuated from the country.
“Some additional U.S. government security personnel will be added to the staff in Baghdad,” the statement said.
Last week, in quick fashion, militants seized control of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, and then moved south and took other towns, vowing to march on to Baghdad. But over the weekend, the militant advance seemed to slow, while in Baghdad volunteers flocked to join newly reconstituted militias to defend the capital.
In response to the crisis, President Obama has said he is weighing a range of actions to help the Iraqi government turn back the insurgents, including airstrikes or other military aid. Earlier this year, when insurgents captured Falluja and other parts of western Anbar Province, the American government rushed guns, ammunition and Hellfire missiles to aid the Iraqis, but has done little to dislodge the militants.
As American forces left Iraq at the end of 2011, the United States planned to significantly increase its diplomatic presence in the country by establishing several fortified outposts defended by a small army of private security guards. The Obama administration, however, soon reconsidered those ambitions, chiefly because of their cost and feasibility. Outposts were built in Basra and Erbil. Another, in Kirkuk, was phased out, and a proposed outpost in Mosul was never opened. Briefly, the embassy had about 16,000 personnel, but almost immediately after the troops left, the American government, confronted with objections from the Iraqi government, began reducing the number of embassy personnel until only a few thousand remained, to guard the embassy and oversee a weapons sales program.
In trying to push forward with an ambitious diplomatic presence to replace the departing military, the government drew up plans, at great cost, for programs that the Iraqi government ultimately did want. Some referred to the diplomatic ambitions as the greatest American aid effort since the Marshall Plan. This included an expensive police training program, which cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Tim Arango reported from Erbil, Iraq, and Michael R. Gordon from Washington.

Islam in action. Beheading — Islamic ritual slaughter. And sharia — brutal and barbaric Islamic law is being imposed.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis) has imposed a strict set of Sharia laws on the citizens of Nineveh province just days after capturing the provincial capital of Mosul. In a document circulating on social media attributed to the group, Isis warned tribal leaders and sheikhs not to “work with [the Iraqi] government and be traitors” while proclaiming that women should only go outside if absolutely necessary.
“For women, dress decently and wear wide clothes. Only go out if needed,” read the document as translated by Al Aan TV reporter Jenan Moussa.
    Sharia.
Further rules included bans on drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, while public gatherings, the possession of guns and the carrying of flags not of the Islamic state were outlawed.
“The battle for Baghdad is nigh: Thousands of men answer Iraqi government’s call to arms as ISIS jihadists bear down on capital,” Daily Mail, June 12, 2014
Iraq’s government has indicated a willingness for the US military to conduct airstrikes against radical Islamist militants
Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have taken over Iraq’s second biggest city Mosul and town of Tikrit
Government forces have stalled the militants’ advance near Samarra, a city just 110km (68 miles) north of Baghdad
ISIS’s goal is to create a Islamic caliphate (state) – it already controls territory in eastern Syria and western/central Iraq
Iraq’s parliament were to hold an emergency session today but it was postponed due to a opposition boycott
Kurdish forces are in full control of Iraq’s oil city of Kirkuk after the federal army abandoned their posts

Turkey is negotiating for the release of 80 nationals held by Islamist militants in Mosul
Iraqi air force is bombing insurgent positions in and around Mosul – 1.3 million citizens still remain in the city
Oil price hit a three-year high this morning on worries that supply could be disrupted
Thousands of Iraqis young and old have answered the beleaguered Shia-led government’s call to arms and signed up to protect the capital, and country, from ISIS militants.
As jihadists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant march on Baghdad after capturing swathes of northern Iraq male supporters of the government turned out in droves today to enlist and fight back.
The militants have already seized control of Iraq’s second largest city Mosul where it is reported that roughly 30,000 soldiers fled, leaving behind tanks and firearms as just 800 fighters approached.
Less than 24 hours later the oil-rich city of Tikrit was captured by the militants, who then turned their attentions to the capital as it pushes ahead with its aim to overthrow the western-backed government as part of its goal to create an Islamic emirate spanning both sides of the Iraq-Syria border.
But so far government forces have stalled the militants’ remarkably rapid advance near Samarra, a city just 110km (68 miles) north of Baghdad and they are now bombing insurgent positions in and around Mosul – although 500,000 residents have fled, 1.3 million citizens remain in the city.
Meanwhile Iraqi Kurds seized control of the major northern oil city of Kirkuk today as the central government’s army abandoned its posts in a rapid collapse that has lost it control of the north.

The fight to save Iraq’s capital from the advancing Al Qaeda-inspired militants is underway today after the government pleaded with Iraqis to sign up and help battle insurgents

Thousands of men of all ages turned up today at an army recruiting center in the city to volunteer for military service in a bid to stop the Baghdad falling to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant

In a bid to fight back against ISIS, Iraqi air force bombed insurgent positions in and around the northern city of Mosul – half a million people so far have fled from their homes, but 1.3 million people still remain.
While the US today avoided directly answering whether they will supply military support, Britain has made it clear they are not contemplating involvement and instead offered humanitarian support.
US Rear Admiral John Kirby said: ‘Our focus continues to be helping Iraq with their counter-terrorism efforts. And we’ve been doing a lot of that since American troops left Iraq.
This afternoon UK Foreign Secretary William Hague ruled out military intervention and said it was up to Iraq’s leadership to deal with the deteriorating military situation. Both countries led the military effort that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Hosyhar Zebari acknowledged the security forces which Washington invested billions in training and equipping before withdrawing its own troops in 2011, had simply melted away, while Russia said the lightning gains by ISIS showed the pointlessness of the 2003 US-led invasion.

GRAPHIC: ISIS releases PHOTOS of Mass Executions

Mass execution photos of Iraq soldiers by jihad savages. Photos below show hundreds of Iraqi shia soldiers being transported in trucks to be executed by ISIS (more on Sunni vs Shia here). Hundreds, perhaps thousands, were transported and met the same brutal fate.
A couple of days ago, I reported ISIS’s declaration that they had captured 4,500 Iraq soldiers in Tikrit.
These photos were released by ISIS — they are not doing this under cover of night or in hiding. They are proud of their slaughter in the cause of Islam.
ERBIL, Iraq — When Islamic militants rampaged through the Iraqi city of Mosul last week, robbing banks of hundreds of millions of dollars, opening the gates of prisons and burning army vehicles, some residents greeted them as if they were liberators and threw rocks at retreating Iraqi soldiers.
It took only two days, though, for the fighters of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria to issue edicts laying out the harsh terms of Islamic law under which they would govern, and singling out some police officers and government workers for summary execution. (NYT)
Al Qaeda linked ISIS is now 60 miles out of Baghdad.
But no worries, Obama assured us: ‘We’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq.’

    America: Silence Equals Complicity

    David Risselada 52 mins ago
    0 Comments

Americans have been watching in absolute horror as the Islamic forces known as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) have virtually retaken everything U.S. forces have secured in Iraq over the past decade. Over the past few years, we have seen our own government supply the very terrorists we have been fighting with arms and money, in their war efforts against Syria and Libya. It has turned into absolute mayhem as day after day we are seeing stories of Christians being slaughtered across the Middle East, and yet the world remains silent. We are on the verge of the next genocide as the situation in Iraq is likely to turn into the next "Cambodia."

For those of you unfamiliar with the "killing fields" of Cambodia, here is a little history lesson. It was yet another instance in the twentieth century where communist forces attempted to purge their society of what they referred to as "undesirables." The so called undesirables were actually those who were successful and able to think outside the box of communist propaganda. Take that to heart America, it isn't all that different from having a president who follows this hardline "Marxist" ideology while constantly dividing our society into different economic classes. President Obama does nothing but antagonize and turn Americans against each other. For those who are awake it is all but obvious that the hardcore left is also looking to purge our society of those who stand in their way of creating the ultimate "state sponsored utopia."

With that being said, the purging of Christians from the Middle East should be a wake up call to Americans. These same people have vowed to cross our unsecured border and slaughter as many people as they can here as well. Honestly, they don't even have to cross our border illegally because they already work within the Obama administration. President Obama has consistently proven time and time again that he cares little for America as he seems intent on helping the Islamists establish their Middle Eastern caliphate. For those that think these words border on the conspiratorial, or make me an extremist I would like you to watch this video.

These are the folks that are promising to cross our borders America. If you haven't been paying attention, Islamists in America have made great progress establishing themselves in this country. Everywhere you turn they are attempting to silence any opposition against their agenda. They are using tactics that attempt to humiliate you with accusations of bigotry and insensitivity. Our schools are inundating our children with the lies of multiculturalism, and silencing them through the false ideology of "white privilege education." I have been warning my senators and congressmen of this for years and no one has done a thing. Their silence makes them complicit.

Watching this video, you have to wonder who really is responsible for the mass shootings taking place in America. Is it possible that they are the work of Islamists? Are they conducting these "mass shootings" in an effort to establish stricter gun control laws in order to make these types of attacks more likely to succeed unchallenged? It certainly is a possibility that could be entertained. Even if this isn't the case, these types of attacks in America would certainly be used to disarm Americans and leave them helpless when in fact, our government should be calling us to arms to defend our borders. The current onslaught of attacks against our Second Amendment, and the false portrayal of gun owners as terrorists, only ensures that people will beg the government for total disarmament in the event these types of attacks occur.
Our president currently stands guilty of committing high treason. He is leaving our borders wide open in his grand "Cloward Piven" strategy of social change. He has released five of the worst terrorist prisoners without notifying the congress. He has funded and armed the very terrorists we have been fighting, rendering the service of those who have died for this nation's liberty null and void. He is attempting to render us helpless through draconian gun control by lying to the uninformed about where the true threats to their safety really lay. He is allowing his Justice Department to mislead the American population by forming a task force to fight homegrown terrorists in America, which this administration has defined as Americans who believe in the Constitution and the Bible, and veterans returning home from combat. He attempts to portray all those opposed to his socialism as racist. This administration has taken from those who loyally execute their duties in service to the U.S. government and given it to those who have no desire to follow our laws, or assimilate into our culture. American servicemen and military veterans are under no obligation to follow the dictates of a government who has turned their back on them in this manner.

It is perfectly clear to all those paying attention what will unfold over the course of the next couple of years. For those Americans who refuse to hold Barrack Hussein Obama accountable for anything, the responsibility rests with you. For all the politicians who are absent in their duties to ensure our government remains a constitutional republic, the responsibility rests with you, especially if you are a so called conservative elected to office to stop this madness. If you are an American who is unsure of what to believe at this point, I recommend you pick up a copy of the Constitution and learn the meaning of natural rights and think about what it means to be a free country. We need you to wake the hell up.

Haven’t We Already Done Enough Damage in Iraq?

    Ron Paul 5 hours ago
    10 Comments

In 2006, I invited the late General Bill Odom to address my Thursday Congressional luncheon group. Gen. Odom, a former NSA director, called the Iraq war "the greatest strategic disaster in American history," and told the surprised audience that he could not understand why Congress had not impeached the president for pushing this disaster on the United States. History continues to prove the General's assessment absolutely correct.

In September, 2002, arguing against a US attack on Iraq, I said the following on the House Floor:

No credible evidence has been produced that Iraq has or is close to having nuclear weapons. No evidence exists to show that Iraq harbors al Qaeda terrorists. Quite to the contrary, experts on this region recognize Hussein as an enemy of the al Qaeda and a foe to Islamic fundamentalism.

    Unfortunately, Congress did not listen.

As we know, last week the second largest city in Iraq, Mosul, fell to the al-Qaeda allied Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Last week, an al-Qaeda that had not been in Iraq before our 2003 invasion threatened to move on the capitol, Baghdad, after it easily over-ran tens of thousands of Iraqi military troops.

The same foreign policy "experts" who lied us into the Iraq war are now telling us we must re-invade Iraq to deal with the disaster caused by their invasion! They cannot admit they were wrong about the invasion being a "cakewalk" that would pay for itself, so they want to blame last week's events on the 2011 US withdrawal from Iraq. But the trouble started with the 2003 invasion itself, not the 2011 troop withdrawal. Anyone who understands cause and effect should understand this.

The Obama administration has said no option except for ground troops is off the table to help the Iraqi government in this crisis. We should not forget, however, that the administration does not consider Special Forces or the CIA to be "boots on the ground." So we may well see Americans fighting in Iraq again.

It is also likely that the administration will begin shipping more weapons and other military equipment to the Iraqi army, in the hopes that they might be able to address the ISIS invasion themselves. After years of US training, costing as much as $20 billion, it is unlikely the Iraqi army is up to the task. Judging from the performance of the Iraqi military as the ISIS attacked, much of that money was wasted or stolen.

A big US government weapons transfer to Iraq will no doubt be favored by the US military-industrial complex, which stands to profit further from the Iraq meltdown. This move will also be favored by those in Washington who realize how politically unpopular a third US invasion of Iraq would be at home, but who want to "do something" in the face of the crisis. Shipping weapons may be an action short of war, but it usually leads to war. And as we have already seen in Iraq and Syria, very often these weapons fall into the hands of the al-Qaeda we are supposed to be fighting!

Because of the government's foolish policy of foreign interventionism, the US is faced with two equally stupid choices: either pour in resources to prop up an Iraqi government that is a close ally with Iran, or throw our support in with al-Qaida in Iraq (as we have done in Syria). I say we must follow a third choice: ally with the American people and spend not one more dollar or one more life attempting to re-make the Middle East. Haven't we have already done enough damage?

This is what Obama has allowed to be unleashed on Iraqis that trusted us when we encouraged them to rise up against their Baathist oppressors. This is what American soldiers sacrificed to prevent. And it’s just beginning.
