Uber-Nanny: Bloomberg Administration Now Moves Against Popcorn and Milk

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been justifiably ridiculed for his banning of large sugary drinks — refusing to allow adults to make such choices for themselves. Despite the overwhelming criticism of the soda ban, his health board appears emboldened rather than chagrined by the controversy. It is now moving to ban certain sizes of popcorn and milk.

At the meeting discussion of the soda ban, some of the members of board said they should be considering other limits on high-calorie foods. Bruce Vladeck wants to see limits on the sizes for movie theater popcorn — noting that “The popcorn isn’t a whole lot better than the soda,”

Board member Dr. Joel Forman has a pet peeve with milk – calling for limits on “milkshakes and milk-coffee beverages that have monstrous amounts of calories.”

The members seem to be struggling to confirm the worst expectations of a food police — once the government gains of taste of food limits, they develop an insatiable desire for more. It becomes a slippery slope . . . if soda, why not popcorn . . . if popcorn, why not milk. The board seems to want to fulfill every stereotype of a nanny state.

By the way, many of us with multiple kids buy large popcorn and split it to save money. Will the Board require certification of a multiple person purchase or just force families to pay the higher price of multiple small popcorn sizes?

We have seen the same phenomenon in California and other states. Once the taste of the nectar of nanny laws takes hold, officials demand more and more control over the diets and choices of citizens. New Yorkers are not known for withholding their opinions in traffic or any other forum. I would hope that they would be heard loud and clear about this board and the need for some new members.

CAGW Names NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg Porker of the Month

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg its June 2012 Porker of the Month for proposing a ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces at restaurants, food carts, movie theaters, and any other venues that receive letter grades from the city for food service. If the measure is approved by the city’s health department after a three-month comment period, which began on June 12, the ban will take effect six months after enactment and be enforced by the city’s regular restaurant inspection team, which will levy $200 fines for noncompliance. With this move, the mayor fully embraces the dubious distinction of becoming the national face of the overreaching “nanny state.”

Mayor Bloomberg, who already imposed bans on trans fat and smoking in parks, has made several forays on his misguided crusade to curtail the consumption of sugary drinks in The Big Apple, all of which have failed. According to a May 31 Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article, “The mayor has the power to enact the proposal through the city’s Board of Health, over which he has presumed control because he has appointed its members.” Several polls indicate that a majority of New Yorkers oppose the ban.

The mayor’s action is capricious and will increase costs to New York City taxpayers, who will be forced to underwrite the expansion of the size and scope of enforcement and inspection activities by the health department. New Yorkers can still buy large bottles of sugary drinks in grocery and convenience stores, order a refill in their 8, 10, or 12-ounce cup, and purchase a wide array of sugary foods in restaurants and other establishments. Nevertheless, Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal will serve as a bellwether for like-minded big-government acolytes in other cities and counties, who are already considering how to emulate the policy.

CAGW has long opposed efforts by the federal government to dictate the contents of Americans’ grocery carts; tens of billions of tax dollars, funneled through multiple federal channels to states and municipalities, including New York City, are already being squandered to regulate Americans’ personal consumption choices. For example, approximately $103 million has already been awarded to 61 states and communities via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to fund “prevention, wellness, and public health activities.”

As history has amply demonstrated, prohibition rarely achieves the goals set forth by scolds, and often invites a raft of unintended consequences. Brian Wansink, one of the scientists who carried out the studies that the mayor cited in defense of the ban, has stated that his group’s research was misinterpreted. In a June 14, 2012 Atlantic article, Wansink expressed concern that the ban “will be a huge setback to fighting obesity” and “poisons the water for ideas that may have more potential.” Corinne Krupp, a professor of public policy at Duke University, told the WSJ that the new policy is “silly,” adding that is not “an effective public policy to address obesity.” In fact, CDC data shows that even as obesity levels have risen, calories from sugary beverages are less prevalent in the American diet.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is looking more and more like an extreme dictator who believes he knows what’s best for everyone in his city. Earlier this year, Bloomberg launched an effort to ban all sugary drinks and large sizes of sodas. He has felt it necessary to dictate what people can eat or drink.

Bloomberg is personally anti-gun. Therefore, he believes that no one other than police should be allowed to own a gun of any kind, in the city of New York. He feels so strongly about guns that he recently said he doesn’t understand why every law enforcement officer in the country don’t go on strike until all guns are outlawed.

Now Czar Bloomberg is using his power as mayor to direct hospital nurses to lock up the baby formula in an effort to force new mothers to breastfeed their babies. So far, 27 of the 40 hospitals in New York City say that they will comply with the mayor edict. However, I do need to point out that if a new mother refuses to breastfeed, she will be allowed to use formula, but only after the nursing staff does their best to persuade her to do otherwise.

I am fully aware that breastfeeding is far better for the baby than using formula. The baby gets vital immunities and nutrients that just aren’t available in formula. Possibly, more importantly, it also creates a bond between mother and child that provides the child with a sense of security that it doesn’t get from having a bottle shoved in it’s face.

Many in the medical community are hailing Bloomberg’s effort as being a positive influence on the health of the child. However, should a person in his position have the power to dictate to a parent as to how they are going to feed and care for their own child? In The Daily Caller article, it referred to Bloomberg’s latest health edict as the ‘mammary mandate’ or the ‘lactate dictate’.

The way Bloomberg is going about trying to force health on every one is turning off health advocates. Rosemarie Scott, a breastfeeding advocate and former member of la Leche League responded to Bloomberg’s mammary mandate saying:

“I’m another former member of La Leche League who nursed all my kids. I’m all for encouraging women to breastfeed but agree that this is NOT the way to do it. Leave it to Bloomberg to be so heavy-handed as to turn off even a breastfeeding advocate like myself.”

As in the fashion of other prominent liberal politicians, Bloomberg believes that he and he alone knows what’s best for everyone in his city. He wants to legislate as many aspects of our lives as possible. He doesn’t care about the U.S. Constitution or personal rights. Bloomberg doesn’t believe that anyone can make their own decisions any better than he can.

If you ask me, all Bloomberg is accomplishing by this latest health mandate is to make a boob of himself.

The new technology is reminiscent of the Minority Report-style �Intellistreets� talking surveillance camera system being implemented in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh; a system that records your conversations and barks orders at you.

Rest assured the rush to deploy the technology is more profit-driven than �for the good of the people,� as defended.

Under the guise of public safety, the creation of this technology represents the frantic determination of the upper-crust megalomaniacs to micro-manage and control every aspect of our lives�the public is the enemy.

http://cdn.bighealthreport.com/wp-co...s3-220x120.jpgWith only a few months left in office, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg seems to be making every last-ditch effort to make sure people start caring about their health, announcing plans Wednesday to introduce legislation before the City Council that would encourage people to take the stairs and not the elevator.

The nation’s main “Nanny State” mayor explained in a press release that the “initiative will promote, not require stair use and help architects, planners and urban designers combat obesity, which is killing more than 5,000 New Yorkers each year.”
“New York City has been a leader when it comes to promoting healthier eating and now we’re leading when it comes to encouraging physical activity as well,” the release said. “Physical activity and healthy eating are the two most important factors in reducing obesity and these steps are part of our ongoing commitment to fighting this epidemic.”
The first piece of legislation that Bloomberg plans to introduce would require buildings “undergoing major renovations” to provide access to at least one “clearly identified stairwell” while the other would increase the amount of time that the door to the stairwell remains open.
Despite the “nanny-state” feeling of Bloomberg’s proposed legislation, many have rallied behind the Mayor’s attempt to get people to take the stairs.
