About 1,500 students gathered in a residential plaza after the game to protest the loss of the New England Patriots to the New York Giants.

Police hurled smoke and flash grenades into the crowd after the students refused to leave.

Although fist fights broke out in the crowd, there were no serious injuries or property damage reported, according to a spokesman for the University of Massachusetts.

Some 14 people were arrested, 13 of which were students.

The New England Patriots also lost to the New York Giants in the 2008 Super Bowl.
