New York City Dumpster Explosions Injure 29

Chelsea Explosion: What We Know and Don’t Know

    By CHRISTOPHER MELESEPT. 18, 2016

Police near the site of the explosion in Chelsea, which was reported around 8:30 p.m. Credit Andres Kudacki/Associated Press A powerful explosion went off on West 23rd Street in Manhattan around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, injuring 29 people, shattering windows and prompting widespread street closures.

Mayor Bill de Blasio held a news conference late on Saturday night in which he called the explosion “an intentional act.”
    Here is the latest:
    Where was the explosion?

The police commissioner, James P. O’Neill, said it happened in front of 131 West 23rd Street around 8:30 p.m. Witnesses said the explosion seemed to have come from a Dumpster on a sidewalk.

Officials said they believed the explosion had been caused by a homemade bomb.

Where was the second device found?

It was found on West 27th Street between the Avenue of Americas and Seventh Avenue almost three hours after the explosion. The authorities described it as a pressure-cooker device like the one used in the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013.

A photograph of the device that was shared on social media showed a silver piece of cookware with wires and a cellphone attached. The police confirmed the photo was authentic.

    What happened to that device?

A Police Department truck, which was towing the second explosive device in a spherical chamber, drove away with it around 2:25 a.m. Sunday. Credit Sandra Garcia/The New York Times The Police Department bomb squad removed the device around 2:25 a.m. to the department’s firing range at Rodman’s Neck in the Bronx, where it will be inspected by robots.

What was the nature of the injuries?

Many of the injuries were caused by shrapnel from the explosion. The injuries were not life-threatening, though one person was seriously hurt, officials said.

Was this an act of terrorism?

The mayor called the explosion “an intentional act” but said at a news conference late on Saturday night that there was no known connection to terrorism.

He added that there was “no specific and credible threat against New York City at this point in time from any terror organization.”

    Are there any suspects?

The police commissioner said at the news conference that no suspect was in custody. “We are still in the process of trying to figure that out,” he said.

Mr. O’Neill said the authorities had collected video of the explosion but asked the public for any footage it might have, as well as eyewitness accounts and tips.

What streets were closed after the explosion?

The Police Department issued an advisory around 1 a.m. on Sunday that 14th Street to 32nd Street was closed eastbound and westbound to vehicular traffic between Fifth and Eighth Avenues.

Was there a connection to an explosion in New Jersey?

Officials said the New York explosion was not tied to a blast that happened 11 hours before when an improvised device exploded in a garbage can near the course of a charity race that was about to start in Seaside Park, N.J.

That device went off around 9:30 a.m. There were no injuries.

    What we don’t know

    • Who was responsible for the explosion.
    • What was inside the pressure cooker.
    • Why the site of the explosion was selected.
    • A motive behind the explosion.

Pipe bombing at New Jersey race probed as possible terrorism

By David Ingram | NEW YORK

A pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey beach town on Saturday along the route of a charity race to benefit military veterans, but no injuries were reported in what investigators were treating as a possible act of terrorism.

The explosive device went off in a trash can about 30 minutes after the scheduled start of the race, which coincidentally was delayed, in Seaside Park, a resort about 80 miles (129 km) south of New York City, officials said - (@ 10 miles north of Atlantic City area).

No damage to surrounding structures was reported, and no runners or bystanders were in close proximity to the 9:30 a.m. blast, so no one was hurt, authorities said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation's so-called joint terrorism task force assumed the lead role in searching for clues to Saturday's bombing, asking members of the public for any tips that might lead to arrests in the case.

The race, dubbed the Seaside Semper Five 5K, was immediately canceled, and authorities closed the beach and several surrounding blocks while evacuating dozens of nearby homes as a search for more devices ensued.

Initial reports of a second bomb planted in another trash proved untrue, according to a statement issued by New Jersey state police several hours later.

Brad Cohen, special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark field office, said at an early evening news conference that investigators had determined there was no longer any threat to the community. Police Chief Francis Larkin said residents forced from their homes were allowed to return.

    MATTER OF MINUTES

Authorities said the lag in the start of the race, reportedly because of late registrations, proved fortuitous, as the bomb went off before runners were on the race course.
"It’s obvious it was meant to affect the run, the fact that it went off at 9:35," Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said in an interview on CNN.
The charity run was organized to benefit military veterans and the families of those lost in military service. The run's name is a reference toSemper Fidelis, Latin for "always loyal," the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Asked if Marines and their families had been targeted, Della Fave said, "I think we can assume that, considering the location of the device right along the run route where, if it was just a matter of minutes in terms of difference, there would have been a good number of people running past that explosive device."

The trash can contained several "pipe bomb-type devices" wired together, Della Fave said. "The one went off, and the others did not," he said.

Law enforcement authorities said they did not know the motive for the blast.
The explosive went off near the boardwalk by the intersection of Ocean Avenue and D Street, authorities said. According to a course map for the race, runners would have passed near the intersection twice: once 0.7 miles into the race and again 0.7 miles from the finish.

About 5,000 people were set to run the 5 km race in Seaside Park, a family-oriented resort known for its beachside boardwalk, a local NBC affiliate reported.

At the 2013 Boston Marathon, two brothers of Chechen ethnicity who professed allegiance to Islamist militants planted homemade bombs near the finish line of the renowned race. The subsequent explosions killed and maimed dozens of bystanders in the most high profile attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001.

'An Act of Terrorism': Investigators Hunting for Clues in NYC 'Bomb' That Injured 29

by Jonathan Dienst, Tom Winter, Richard Esposito, Emmanuelle Saliba and Phil Helsel

NYC Mayor Tells Citizens to 'Be Vigilant' After Manhattan Explosion 1:10

An explosion that rocked a crowded Manhattan neighborhood Saturday night and injured 29 people has been determined to be an "intentional act," and Gov. Andrew Cuomo said it was clearly "an act of terrorism."
The explosion, on West 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in the Chelsea neighborhood, was reported at around 8:30 p.m. Twenty-nine people were hospitalized with injuries, but they had all been released by Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

"A bomb exploding in New York is obviously an act of terrorism," Cuomo said Sunday morning.

Less than three hours after the blast, an object police described as a "possible secondary device" was found just a few blocks away from the original explosion while officers were combing the area. Cuomo said the device was "similar in design" to the one that detonated just blocks away.

    — NYC Mayor's Office (@NYCMayorsOffice) September 18, 2016
It was later sent to an NYPD range in the Bronx aboard a special containment vessel, the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's office said.

De Blasio said Saturday night that the blast had not been linked to terror, but Cuomo clarified that the explosion had not been linked to an international terror group. "A bomb going off is generically a terrorist activity," Cuomo said.

Evidence From NY Explosion Sent to Quantico, Says Gov. Cuomo 1:34

On Sunday afternoon, De Blasio and other city officials stressed that the investigation was in early stages and while investigators could determine the blast was "criminal" and "intentional," they hadn't nailed down a suspect or a motive.

No arrests have been made, but NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said "New York City residents can rest assured that we'll get to the bottom of this."

Still, O'Neill, who was sworn in just a day before the blast, said the situation had him worried. "We did have a bomb detonated on 23rd street and we have no one apprehended so of course I'm concerned."

    — NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) September 18, 2016
Security had already been tightened in the city for the ongoing United Nations General Assembly, but the presence of officers throughout New York City after the blast would be "bigger than ever," De Blasio said.

Cuomo ordered 1,000 New York State police and National Guardsmen across the city.

Police had said the blast in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan appeared to come from inside a large trash bin, and law enforcement sources said they have video of a man dropping something into or next to a dumpster.

Videos like that — from nearby businesses —are what detectives want to get their hands on from both 23rd and 27th streets to see who was there before the explosions, said NYPD Chief Carlos Gomez.

He said the investigation would take time. "There's a lot of people out on the street on a warm Saturday evening in Manhattan," he said.

New Yorkers were encouraged to remain vigilant Sunday, and call police with any information they may have about either device.

    Wanted: Ahmad Khan Rahami

    September 19, 2016
    By G. Perry

A suspect in the terror plots in New Jersey, as well as the Chelsea bombing, has been identified. Authorities are now seeking the whereabouts of Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized alien from Afghanistan. It would appear that this is the work of a terror cell, not the ubiquitous lone wolf of so many prior jihadi assaults. After decades of thoughtless third world immigration, New Jersey finds itself with an entrenched Islam problem, as Chris Christie’s short-lived presidential campaign illustrated. The idea that this threat was erased with the conviction of the Blind Sheik is foolhardy, as this weekend’s attacks demonstrate.
