Venezuela's Chavez Pronounces Socialism 'God's Kingdom On Earth'

As a new poll shows Venezuela's Hugo Chavez's popularity plummeting in his beleaguered nation, a top Venezuelan newspaper El Universal reported that Chavez sees it as his God-given right to seize property for the public domain.

Speaking at an event marking the tenth anniversary of the Peoples Bank, a brick manufacturer, Chavez declared the glory of his leftist ways.

"Every day I am more convinced that socialism is the kingdom of God here on earth," he said.

"Every day I'm more revolutionary, more socialist every day," he said. "I'm taking Venezuela toward socialism, the people and workers."

Chavez was especially incensed at trucking firms making profits hauling state-produced cement and building materials, El Universal reported.

"Who gets rich?" Chavez asked. "The capitalist intermediary."

According to the newspaper, "Chávez considered that the distributors of products have a 'selfish' capitalist attitude that makes the products more expensive when they arrive at their final destination.

"Chávez asked Minister of Public Works Diosdado Cabello to review the performance of the distributors of cement and make deals with them. If they refuse to do so, the trucks and semi-trailers will be expropriated.

"The Venezuelan leader said that he has the authority 'granted by the people' and the Constitution to expropriate whatever he deems necessary."

Chavez's comments came as a poll published in the Universal on Tuesday shows Chavez popularity slipping as a majority of Venezuelans see their national crisis worsening.

The survey by the Caracas-based polling firm Datanalisis found that 46 percent responded positively when asked how they view Chavez's presidency, down from 53 percent a month earlier.

The survey also found that 59 percent said they saw the situation in the country as negative.

The results are based on the responses of 1,300 randomly selected Venezuelans questioned between Sept. 23 and Oct. 8. The poll had a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.

Pro-Chavez congressman Alberto Castelar said he believes Datanalisis underestimated Chavez's popularity.

But the polling firm's past findings have been close to election results.

Datanalisis pollster Luis Vicente Leon noted that Chavez — whose popularity hit a recent high of 61 percent in February — has recovered from worse situations before and remains by far the most popular politician in the country.

Leon said the recent decline in Chavez's popularity appears to be linked mainly to concerns about the economy, and that other factors include complaints about power outages and water shortages.
