COPS: Self-styled jihadist admits to killing 4 people, calls it ‘vengeance’ for U.S. actions in Mideast

SEATTLE — A man accused of shooting to death two men in Seattle on June 1 and a man in New Jersey later that month was charged Wednesday with gunning down a 30-year-old in the Skyway area in April — all, he allegedly told police, as “vengeance” for U.S. actions in the Mideast.

Ali Muhammad Brown, 40, is quoted in charging documents as saying that he they were “just kills” and that he was “just doing my small part” as a self-styled jihadist.

He was charged Wednesday with aggravated first-degree murder by the King County Prosecutor’s Office for the slaying of Leroy Henderson, 30 in the unincorporated King County area of Skyway on the night of April 27.

Henderson had been shot 10 times in the back as he was walking home.

Brown had earlier been charged with aggravated first-degree murder for the slayings of Ahmed Said and Dwone Anderson-Young in Seattle’s Leschi neighborhood on June 1. He is also accused of killing a man, Brendan Tevlin, in the Newark, N.J., area on June 25, after he had fled Seattle.

All four were killed with a 9mm handgun.

In court documents, King County sheriff’s detectives said surveillance video in Skyway showing an SUV that Brown was using at the time and 9mm cartridge casings found at Henderson’s slaying led them to Brown.

Police said that the SUV with lights on was seen on video passing Henderson as he walked down the street. It then turned around and, with lights off, slowly approached behind him. Moments later, Henderson was shot 10 times in the back. The men did not know each other, police said.

In court documents, police said Brown confessed to all four murders.

“The one in King County on the 28th, the two in Seattle on June 1st, and the one in West Orange (N.J.) on June 25th?” a detective asked.

“All of it,” Brown allegedly replied.

“Those 4 murders that we’re talking about were all done for vengeance for the actions of the United States in the Middle East?” the detective asked.

“Yes,” Brown allegedly replied.

“Are you taking responsibility for that?” the detective asked.

“Just doing my small part,” Brown allegedly replied.

In a post-Miranda statement to detectives in Essex County, N.J., for Tevlin’s slaying there, Brown allegedly described Tevlin as a “just kill,” describing a “just kill” as a target that was an adult male, not a woman, child or elderly person.

“My mission is vengeance. For the lives, millions of lives are lost every day,” he reportedly said. “Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, all these places where innocent lives are being taken every single day … All these lives are taken every single day by America, by this government. So a life for a life.”

Late Wednesday, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray issued a statement that read, in part:

“Ali Muhammad Brown took the lives of three members of our community, and, with these charges, he will face justice.

“The charging documents reveal disturbing details about Brown’s motive for committing these murders, which appears to have based on anti-American sentiment and an extreme interpretation of the Muslim faith. While Brown invoked his faith, we must be clear that Brown’s views and his actions do not reflect the values of Muslims.

“In this moment of grief, we, as one community, across all faiths and religions races and ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations, can and must renew our resolve to stand firm against violence and hatred of all kinds.”

WEST ORANGE — The man accused of gunning down a Livingston teenager in his car earlier this summer told investigators the murder was an act of retribution for U.S. military action against Muslims in the Middle East.

According to court documents filed Wednesday in Washington state, where he is accused of killing three other men, Ali Muhammad Brown said he considered it his mission to murder 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin as an act of “vengeance” for innocent lives lost in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Iran.

“All these lives are taken every single day by America, by this government. So a life for a life,” he told detectives, according to the documents.

Brown, 29, also confessed to killing the other men, all of whom, like Tevlin, were shot multiple times in isolated areas late at night. He described the murder as a “just kill” – carried out against an adult male who was not in the company of any women, children or elderly persons, court papers said.

Prosecutors say Brown is a devout Muslim who had become angered by U.S. military intervention in the Islamic world, which he referred to as “evil.” He also referred to drug use as inherently evil.

“During the interview Brown also stated that, as part of his beliefs, if a ‘man sees evil then he must take action against that evil’,” according to court papers.

Essex County authorities have characterized Tevlin’s June 25 murder as a robbery that turned violent when Brown fired 10 shots into the popular college student’s vehicle, which was stopped at a red light at the corner of Walker Road and Northfield Avenue in West Orange.

While three other men, including Brown’s co-defendants Eric Williams and Jeremy Villagran, fled the scene, Brown moved Tevlin’s body into the passenger seat and drove his car to a nearby apartment building, where he abandoned it.

The brutal slaying was just one act in what authorities have characterized as a spree of violence that began two months earlier and 3,000 miles away.

On April 27, police found the body of 30-year-old Leroy Henderson on a stretch of road called the Skyway outside Seattle, which was later linked to Brown via shell casings that matched those found in his other alleged murders.

Prosecutors in Washington say there was no sign of a struggle prior to the slaying, that the two had any prior relationship or contact, or that the crime was motivated by “robbery, drugs or any other crime.”

Brown is also charged with gunning down two Seattle men, Ahmed Said and Dwone Anderson-Young, on June 1.

Authorities say he had met Said through a hook-up app aimed at gay men, and met them at a nightclub before shooting them.

Brown, a registered sex offender and transient who lived in East Orange briefly as a youth, has a lengthy criminal history dating back more than a decade.

In 2004, he was arrested along with 13 other members of an alleged bank fraud ring in Seattle, which federal investigators believed may have been sending money earned through the scheme to terrorist groups.

But court papers say prosecutors were never able to compile any evidence the money was being shipped overseas. In 2005, Brown pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and was released with credit for time served.

Brown was arrested in West Orange on July 18, and is currently being held at the Essex County Jail in Newark on $5 million bail. Authorities are in discussions over whether to extradite him to Washington, where he could face the death penalty if convicted.

NEWARK — Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the unrelated shooting deaths of two Essex County teenagers, each of which began as a robbery, authorities said.

Andre Fields, 31, of Irvington was charged in the death of 17-year-old Cheyanne Bond, a recent graduate of Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark, who was shot and killed on June 29 after two men approached her and a friend and demanded they hand over a iPhone, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

Three men, including a double-murder suspect from Seattle, were charged in the death of 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin, a Livingston resident who had just returned home from his first year of college at the University of Richmond in Virginia. Tevlin was found shot to death inside a SUV on June 25. Prosecutors said the suspects robbed Tevlin of several personal items.

At a press conference this afternoon, Murray said Tevlin was in his grandfather's car heading home the night of his death when a car carrying three men pulled up alongside him at a traffic light.

West Orange resident Eric Williams, 18, stayed behind the wheel while Villagran and Brown — already wanted for the shooting death of two gay men in Seattle on June 1 — hopped out and surrounded Tevlin's Jeep Liberty, according to authorities.

"He was, at this time, a simple victim of an intent to rob," Murray said.

One of the men had a brief conversation with Tevlin before Brown, who was standing on the vehicle's passenger side, allegedly fired 10 bullets, eight of which struck Tevlin.

Williams and Villagran then fled the scene, while Brown got inside Tevlin's vehicle, moved his body into the passenger seat, and drove to an apartment complex at 275 Northfield Avenue, where Villagran lives, Murray said.

Police responding to a call of shots fired found his body a short time later.

Brown was taken into custody on July 18 after he was found living in a makeshift tent in West Orange, and arrested without incident. Police recovered a gun at the camp site which had previously been linked to both Tevlin's death and the Seattle murders, Murray said.

A registered sex offender, he apparently has ties to New Jersey and had returned to the area from Seattle in June. He was also wanted in a June 29 carjacking in Point Pleasant, for which an Ocean County judge had issued a warrant, though he was never taken into custody, authorities said.

He is being held on $5 million bail at the Essex County Jail on murder, felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and weapons charges, as well as offenses related to the carjacking. He is awaiting extradition to Washington to be arraigned in the Seattle murders.

Villagran is also facing aggravated assault charges for a separate shooting in Newark, and has been in the Essex County Jail since July 9, authorities said, while Eric Williams was arrested this morning. Both are charged with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and weapons charges, and are being held on $1 million bond.

Bond was walking on the 500 block of South 17th Street near Westside Park in Newark's South Ward June 29 when she and a male friend were approached by two armed men, who demanded they hand over an iPhone, according to Murray.

She was shot once in the head during the encounter, authorities said, killing her. Her companion was also shot, but managed to survive.

One of the men remains at large, though investigators were able to link Fields to the killing, authorities announced today. He was arrested on Friday, and has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, robbery, conspiracy and various weapons charges, and is being held on $1 million bond.

Murray said the sole motive for the crime appears to have been robbery, but declined to disclose details of whether the phone belonged to Bond or her companion, citing the active search for the remaining suspect. They did not say whether the other man involved in the robbery has been identified.

Both investigations are ongoing, and additional charges may still be filed.

Bond was a member of the cheerleading squad at Shabazz High School, from which she had graduated just nine days before her death. School officials described her as a quiet and dedicated student who had planned to study nursing at Union County College in the fall.

Her murder was the third in Newark in less than 24 hours, and the city’s 43rd of 2014.

Tevlin was the eldest of four children and a popular presence in Livingston and at Seton Hall Prep, where he graduated high school last year.

His funeral last month drew more than 1,000 mourners, who described him as a kind, athletic young man who lived by a motto of “Good vibes and easy living.”

The Rev. Msgr. Michael E. Kelly, president of Seton Hall Prep, today said the arrest made in Tevlin’s murder puts the teenager’s family, friends and the greater school community at ease.

But Kelly added, “Unfortunately, it’s not going to bring Brendan back…to us.”
