'We can no longer tolerate these chronic trade abuses': Trump lashes out at China and others

President Donald Trump delivered a speech at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Da Nang, Vietnam
Regional trade is front and center at the summit as members of the Trans Pacific Partnership deal look to cement a new agreement

President Donald Trump pushed for freedom and economic openness in a Friday speech that portrayed Washington as a more respectful trade partner to Asian nations than China has been.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam, the president also warned against mistreating his country, accusing some countries in the region of "product dumping, subsidized goods, currency manipulation and predatory industrial policies."

"We can no longer tolerate these chronic trade abuses and we will not tolerate them," Trump said.

Additionally, Washington will "no longer tolerate the audacious theft of intellectual property, we will confront the destructive practices of forcing businesses to surrender their technologies to the state and forcing them into joint ventures in exchange for market access," he said.

Many U.S. firms operating in China have complained of such policies.

Trump said he did not blame the world's second-largest economy or other countries for "taking advantage of the U.S. on trade," repeating a message he delivered in Beijing the previous day.

Those who play by the rules will be Washington's closest economic partners, Trump said. "Those who do not can be certain that the United States will no longer turn a blind eye to violations, cheating or economic aggression. Those days are over."

"We cannot achieve open markets if we do not ensure fair market access," he said, adding that unfair trade "undermines us all."

The world's largest economy will also ink bilateral trade agreements with Indo-Pacific nations that abide by fair and reciprocal trade, he continued. "What we will no longer do is enter into large agreements that surrender our sovereignty."

Trump pulled his country out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, pegged as the world's largest trade deal, in January on concerns about American jobs.

The U.S. leader also praised the economic transformation of many Asian nations, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines, saying Washington has been an active partner in Asia-Pacific since the U.S. first won independence.

"We seek friendship and we don't dream of domination."

Trump arrived in Vietnam on Friday as part of a milestone Asia tour that will take him to Manila next.

The APEC summit, taking place in this year, is focused on regional trade, with particularly attention on the TPP.

Since Washington's withdrawal from the landmark accord in January, the pact's 11 remaining members have been discussing how to move ahead with the agreement, which seeks to remove tariffs across certain industries as well as safeguard labor, environmental and intellectual property rights. A framework was expected at this week's APEC summit, but nothing final has been revealed so far.

The U.S. president was widely expected to hold a separate meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who will also be at the APEC summit. But that won't be possible due to scheduling conflicts, the White House said on Friday.

    Absolutely!

To say I am disappointed by the President's inaction in this area is an understatement.

To say I am disappointed by my own state (Texas) and it's not only inaction, but outright support for illegal immigration I am more than disappointed.

What I am most disappointed, pointing at myself as well, is the inaction of the American people.

We could fix this thing or go a long way to doing so. If we simply put our money where our beliefs are in this in every way we can,as often as we can and in every situation we can, it would have an effect. Just doing it on an individual basis will help if enough do it, but if we would organize and target the lawbreakers, it would work.

Would it have an effect on our economy - you bet, perhaps detrimental at first. It would not destroy it, though. The thing we have to admit is, our country is doomed, economy and all, unless we take back control of it. That means taking control, as much as possible of our own lives. Would it have an effect on a lot of businesses, certainly. They are breaking the law to make profits. If a company cannot stay in business without breaking the law, and harming the country and it's people, it shouldn't be in business.

An economy based on greed, lawlessness, theft, etc., cannot continue for long and it will eventually crash. Think of how many problems would be solved by American citizens actually working, making a living. We would have less on welfare, less idle, hopeless, disgruntled people. That should mean a decrease in crime and theoretically, a decrease in the size of government(s), and an increase in the quality of education, medical care - just life, in general.

The difference would be enormous so much so that the savings on welfare payments and programs alone would balance the budget and end deficit-spending.

That's one of the reasons, I doubt it will happen. The monies from these programs are a boon to corporate profits as well as necessitating more people on the government payroll.

While I am not happy about the monies spent on welfare, I have always been saddened by the waste of human potential - among Americans.

It's different with illegals - they are allowed to continue to work, make plenty of money and still get benefits - Americans don't.

People who are working, earning, providing for themselves have a sense of accomplishment, of self-worth. That is something some people in this country have never known. Some haven't known it for generations.

As a bred and born Texan currently residing in N.C., I'm extremely proud of what Gov. Abbott of Texas is doing in the fight against illegal immigration. Of course Gov. Abbott can't be blamed for what individual cities, such as Austin, are doing in support of illegal immigrants. I'd certainly be more than willing to trade you one Gov. Cooper for one Gov. Abbott!

I, too, have had instances of pride in our governor, certainly more than the previous two.

The previous two were champions of illegal immigrants - George Bush was throughout his terms as governor and president, so I realize this governor inherited a very bad situation.

Something as simple as enforcing traffic laws would help.

I was proud of his statement when asked about gun control. He said, "In Texas, we already have a law against killing."
That has been my premise all along.
