Weekend violence in Chicago: 23 shot, 6 fatally

Six people were killed and 17 others were wounded in Chicago over the weekend as gun violence in the city continues to be markedly down from the record levels of the previous two years, according to data kept by the Tribune.
At least 231 people have been shot in Chicago this year, 110 fewer than this time last year and 88 fewer than in 2016. There have been at least 45 homicides, compared with 58 this time last year and 72 in 2016, according to Tribune data.
Trevor Evans, 19, died in the first homicide of the weekend. He was shot in the 3900 block of West Van Buren Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side around 4:35 p.m. Friday and pronounced dead early Saturday, police said.
Later Friday, Beatrice Jones, 56, was found fatally shot about 9:50 p.m. in an apartment in the 8600 block of South Carpenter Street in the South Side’s Gresham neighborhood, police said. She was killed in an apparent domestic incident.

About 12:05 a.m. Saturday, a 53-year-old man was found shot on a Far South Side sidewalk and pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn four hours later, police said.
Later in the day, Earl Smith, 25, was fatally shot by a man following an argument in the South Shore neighborhood about 10:30 a.m., police said.
Early Sunday, Brandon Bivens, 18, was killed in a shooting that injured two others on the Far South Side about 12:35 a.m. The three were standing on the sidewalk when someone opened fire, police said.
Early Monday, a man was found fatally shot in a snowy lot on the Far South Side. His age and identity were not immediately known.

In addition to the shootings, 18-year-old Brandon Porter-Young was found dead with multiple stab wounds to his upper body in the 3000 block of West Jackson Boulevard in the East Garfield Park neighborhood around 10 p.m. Friday. He was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m. He had lived in the 1700 block of North Mayfield Avenue, officials said.
