White House Aims to Protect New Texas Map
    By Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court on Friday granted the Bush administration's request to join Texas in defending a Republican-friendly congressional map engineered by Rep. Tom DeLay.

The administration will share time with Texas lawyers on March 1, when the court holds a special afternoon session to consider four appeals that stem from the bitter dispute over Texas congressional district boundaries.

Justices are considering whether the Republican-controlled Legislature acted purely for partisan gain in 2003 when it threw out district boundaries that had been used in the 2002 elections, and whether the new map violated a federal voting rights law.

The Justice Department approved the plan although staff lawyers concluded that it diluted minority voting rights. The Bush administration asked the high court last week for permission to participate in the case, supporting Texas.

The redistricting helped Republicans win 21 of Texas' 32 seats in Congress in the last election, up from 15.

The congressional districts were redrawn after Republicans took control of the state House in 2002. DeLay, R-Texas, has been indicted on money laundering charges stemming from his efforts to aid Republicans in state legislative elections that year.

DeLay stepped down as U.S. House majority leader because of the charges but denies any wrongdoing.

The cases are League of United Latin American Citizens v. Perry, 05-204; Travis County v. Perry, 05-254; Jackson v. Perry, 05-276; GI Forum of Texas v. Perry, 05-439.

I thought when I read the subject title. That they was meaning the new map of Texas would be flying a Mexican Flag. Since it sure does look Like the White House kisses Vicente Fox's rearend.

Its still REALLY important because they will be distributing voting rights to a major minority crowd. And some of them, MOST, are illegal immigrants with fake SSN's and drivers licenses. That will give them the access to voting privledges otherwise reserved for legal citizens.

Let me tell you a little secret, Scub. I see more Mexican flags in the part of TX where I live than I see American flags!

    Here is an ideal

I think the flag issue is perfect. let us make a law that is while in the US and you are flying another country flag, law enforcement will have the right to ask you for your legal papers or proof of legal status. we can also include due to national security purposes if speaking another language beside english you can also be asked. This is not profiling anyone race.

50CAL, I like both those ideas!

But, since it is illegal for me, as an individual, to fly a US flag in certain other nations that I'm personally aware of, I really think it should be illegal for any place but a foreign consulate to fly a foreign flag on US soil.

Since legal US citizens are expected to be able to communicate in English, I think that the inability to communicate in English should be an automatic reason to ask for papers.

I know we have visitors here who come to see Disneyland, etc. I doubt they are going to be upset in any way if they are asked for their passports. Other countries ask and receive identification without a hassle. Why can't we? In fact, in Arab lands, certain hand signals mean "let me see your papers" and there are random checkpoints where people are automatically asked. I don't see anything at all wrong with that practice.
