Police arrested 219 people in New York City on Thursday night and into Friday morning as protesters took to the street for the second night after a grand jury decided not to indict the police officer in Eric Garner's chokehold death.
Demonstrators also turned out in cities including Washington D.C., Seattle, Atlanta and Oakland a day after the decision not to charge Officer Daniel Pantaleo for his role in the July incident.
Although there have been no reports of violence from protesters, police made a number of arrests as scores of demonstrators shut down traffic on the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.
Many arrests were made in Times Square, where police pushed back against protesters just before 11pm, and others were later arrested at Eighth Avenue and 51st Street and at Madison Avenue and 57th Street, ABC7 reported.
Eric Garner's case converged with the Ferguson shooting and investigations out of South Carolina and Cleveland to stir a national conversation about racial justice and police use of force.

Demonstrators protested for a second night in New York, carrying replicas of coffins across the Brooklyn Bridge, and turned out in such cities as Denver, Detroit and Minneapolis.
The protests have pushed politicians and others to talk about the need for better police training, body cameras and changes in the grand jury process to restore faith in the legal system.
'A whole generation of officers will be trained in a new way,' New York Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed as he and his police commissioner outlined previously announced plans to teach officers how to communicate better with people on the street.

In Cleveland, the U.S. Justice Department and the city reached an agreement to overhaul the police department after federal investigators found that officers use excessive force far too often, causing deep mistrust, especially among blacks. The investigation was prompted chiefly by a 2012 police ar chase that ended in the deaths of two unarmed people in a hail of 137 bullets.
Just last week, protesters took to the streets of Cleveland after a white police officer shot and killed a black 12-year-old boy carrying what turned out to be pellet gun.

At a news conference in New York after a night of protests led to 83 arrests, the Rev. Al Sharpton called the state-level grand jury system 'broken' when it comes to police brutality cases and urged federal authorities to fix it.
'The federal government must do in the 21st century what it did in the mid-20th century,' the said. 'Federal intervention must come now and protect people from state grand juries.'
Still, federal civil rights cases against police officers are exceedingly rare.
In the past two decades, only a few such cases have reached trial in New York — most notably the one involving Abner Louima, who was sodomized with a broom handle in a police station in 1997. Several other high-profile cases didn't come together.
Police were out in full force across New York City on Thursday night as officials braced for a second night of protests from demonstrators furious with a grand jury decision not to indict the officer who killed Eric Garner.
A crowd of thousands first convened in the city's Union Square to demand change to a justice system they say unfairly favors police in cases like Eric Garner's and Michael Brown's.
Likewise, countless police cruisers, vans and officers showed up en mass along Manhattan's biggest centers of commerce prepared to keep the peace.

New Yorkers protest decision in chokehold death

If the previous night's demonstrations are any measure, both sides will have measurable success Thursday night.
On Wednesday, the protesters were out in force and with their shear numbers and willingness to walk into streets and onto highways, their message made its way onto television and computer screens across America.
And thanks to their peacefulness and the NYPD's willingness to let them deliver that message, fewer than 90 were arrested during the peaceful night of protests.
Early Thursday evening, police had arrested 60 people, mostly for disorderly conduct, reports Al Jazeera.
Once their numbers had sufficiently grown on Thursday evening, the demonstrations began to move as it had the night before.
Organizers and marchers alike took to Twitter to alert the group that from Union Square, they would move south--downtown to Foley Square.
Thousands flooded into the square near City Hall to chant the matras of 'black lives matter,' 'No justice, no peace' and 'I can't breathe.'
Simultaneous and subsequent demonstrations were soon seen at either side of Manhattan.

'The time to apologize or have any remorse ... would have been when my husband was screaming he couldn't breathe,' Esaw Garner told NBC's Today show.
When the grand jury's decision was revealed, Garner's wife told the Today show: 'I started crying because it's not fair. It's not fair. What could they not see? How could they possibly not indict?'
The officer's lawyer, Stuart London, said on Thursday that Pantaleo was trying to bring Garner to the ground using a move he learned in training to protect the two of them from crashing through a storefront glass window in the struggle. Lynch also said Pantaleo had properly applied an approved takedown technique.
'A DEEPLY EMOTIONAL DAY': NYC MAYOR BILL DE BLASIO'S STATEMENT AFTER WEDNESDAY'S DECISION

'This is a deeply emotional day – for the Garner Family, and all New Yorkers. His death was a terrible tragedy that no family should have to endure. This is a subject that is never far from my family's minds – or our hearts. And Eric Garner's death put a spotlight on police-community relations and civil rights – some of most critical issues our nation faces today.

Statement: NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke earlier in the day about plans to equip NYPD officers with body cameras in the wake of the Michael Brown controversy in Ferguson

'Today's outcome is one that many in our city did not want. Yet New York City owns a proud and powerful tradition of expressing ourselves through non-violent protest. We trust that those unhappy with today's grand jury decision will make their views known in the same peaceful, constructive way. We all agree that demonstrations and free speech are valuable contributions to debate, and that violence and disorder are not only wrong – but hurt the critically important goals we are trying to achieve together.
'These goals – of bringing police and community closer together and changing the culture of law enforcement -- are why we have introduced so many reforms this year. It starts at the top with Commissioner Bratton - a strong, proven change agent. We have dramatically reduced the overuse and abuse of stop-and-frisk. We have initiated a comprehensive plan to retrain the entire NYPD to reduce the use of excessive force and to work with the community. We have changed our marijuana policy to reduce low-level arrests, and we have launched a new pilot program for body cameras for officers to improve transparency and accountability.
'These are the long term reforms we are making to ensure we don't endure tragedies like this one again in the future. But we also know that this chapter is not yet complete. The grand jury is but one part of the process. There will still be an NYPD internal investigation. And we know the US Attorney is continuing her investigation. Should the federal government choose to act, we stand ready to cooperate.
'Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – one of our nation's most profound thinkers on these issues – taught us something very simple: 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' The problem of police-community relations and civil rights is not just an issue for people of color – or young people – or people who get stopped by police. This is a fundamental issue for every American who cares about justice.
'All of us must work together to make this right – to work for justice – and to build the kind of city – and nation – we need to be.'

The city's medical examiner said police officers had killed the 43-year-old Garner by compressing his neck and chest and ruled the death a homicide, adding that Garner's asthma and obesity had contributed to his death.
Although chokeholds are technically banned by New York City police regulations, the 2,000-page patrol guide is vague about whether such use of force can be allowed in certain circumstances, said Maria Haberfeld, who heads John Jay College's Department of Law, Police Science and Criminal Justice Administration.
That grey area, she said, may have influenced the grand jury and could play a role in determining whether Pantaleo faces departmental discipline.
Holder said on Wednesday the Justice Department, which is already probing the circumstances of the Missouri shooting, would also examine the Garner case, as well as the local inquiry into it.
Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch, whom President Barack Obama has nominated to succeed Holder and whose office will help lead the investigation, said in a statement on Wednesday the probe would be 'fair and thorough.'
Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan, whose office oversaw the local investigation, said on Wednesday he had asked a judge to authorize the release of evidence that was presented to the grand jury, which like all grand juries operated in secret. A decision has not been announced.

I wish our police and law enforcement agencies took the violations of law by illegal aliens and their employers as seriously as they take jay-walking, selling a cigarette and blocking traffic during a protest by citizens.
