As American as apple pie
Unless you live on the US, you've probably never experienced a tornado - and have probably barely heard the word used.

This is not the case for people who live in America's "tornado belt."

Every year, storms with ferocious destructive power plough through the region.

Fortunately, much of the "tornado belt" is farmland and thinly populated.

But not all of it is.

People who think that living in a big city protects them from the ravages of tornadoes are indulging in wishful thinking.

Nothing terribly deep, but interesting
and it answers a question I've long had.

The US is subject to terrific windstorms
known as tornadoes that don't afflict
other parts of the world anywhere near
as much.

Why?

A clear scientific answer.
