The governments of the United States and Canada are not conducting tests for radioactivity – at least not to the knowledge of the public. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had agreed to continue purchasing seafood from Japan, despite the fact that the food is not being tested for radioactive contamination. Last November, independent testing in Japan showed 65 per cent of the catches tested positive for cesium (a radioactive material). Instead of refusing to purchase the poisoned fish, food safety agencies in both the United States and Canada have simply raised the “acceptable level of radiation.” We can’t go offending the Japanese after promising to buy their tainted goods, now can we?"
"How can we protect ourselves? First, be aware of what items are likely to be highly tainted.
1.) SEAFOOD: Question the origin of ALL seafood. Fish and crustaceans from the Pacific Ocean should all be considered to be poisoned with radiation.
2.) WATER: The rainfall and snowfall are all radiated. Do not drink any water that has not been filtered. The tap water that flows from your faucet has NOT been treated to rid it of radioactive particles. A recent report from the NY Times stated, “A rooftop water monitoring program managed by UC Berkeley’s Department of Nuclear Engineering detected substantial spikes in rain-borne iodine-131 during torrential downpours …
3.) DAIRY PRODUCTS: Milk and milk products from the West Coast states currently have the highest levels of radiation in North America.
4.) PRODUCE: Leafy Vegetables, Wines, Tomatoes, Strawberries...all produce from California or any other West Coast State are also likely to be tainted.
5.) MEAT: If a animal eats any leafy vegetable all along the West Coast, that animal has consumed radiation, and is poisoned. This is any animal from cows, pigs, goats, sheep to wild deer and other game.
If you eat the above foods from areas with high radiation levels, you are eating radiation and feeding it to your children. Slowly the radiation levels within your body will build up. This is PERMANENT."
Talk about serious food for thought. (To read the essay in full, head here.)
Official detects radiation spike on California beach, now at 500% normal levels — ‘Befuddled’ as to why it’s so high, claims there’s no ‘immediate’ health concern — Public’s interest in Fukushima nuclear waste rising (VIDEO)
Half Moon Bay Review, Jan. 3, 2014 at 8:21p ET: [San Mateo] County health officials first learned of the radiation levels last week, and they sent their own inspector on Dec. 28 to Pacifica [...] the county inspector measured the beach to have a radiation level of about 100 micro-REM per hour [1 microsievert per hour], or about five times the normal amount. [...] Although the radiation levels were clearly higher than is typical, [San Mateo County environmental health director Dean Peterson] emphasized that it was still not unsafe for humans. [...] Peterson admitted he was “befuddled” as to why radiation levels were higher than normal, but he was skeptical that the Fukushima meltdown could be the cause. He noted that many innocuous items could spike the radiation levels in an area, including red-painted disposable eating utensils. [...] Peterson forwarded the matter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Public Health [...]http://enenews.com/wp-content/upload....-04-00.20.jpg

Dean Peterson, San Mateo County environmental health director: “It’s not something that we feel is an immediate public health concern [...] We’re not even close to the point of saying that any of this is from Fukushima. [...] I honestly think the end result of this is that it’s just higher levels of background radiation.”
The Half Moon Bay Review article provides details on the YouTube video that spurred local officials into action: An amateur video of a Geiger counter showing high radiation levels at a Coastside beach has drawn the attention of local, state and federal public health officials. [...] the short video has galvanized public concerns that radioactive material could be landing on the local coastline from Japan as a result of the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi reactors. [...] First posted last week on YouTube, the seven-minute video shows the meter of a Geiger counter as an off-camera man measures different spots on the beach south of Pillar Point Harbor. The gadget’s alarm begins ringing as its radiation reading ratchets up to about 150 counts per minute, or roughly five times the typical amount found in the environment. [...] In a blog entry, the unidentified poster of the video noted that he has been monitoring local beaches for two years before noticing a sudden rise in radiation levels in recent days. [...] In the following days other amateurs with Geiger counters began posting similar videos online. [...] “We can’t comment on anybody’s media creation. We really have no way of knowing right now whether it’s valid or not,” said [state Public Health] spokeswoman Wendy Hopkins.

Besides the billions of gallons of radioactive water spilling from the abandoned Fukushima Nuclear Energy Plant every day, there is also a steady plume of radio nuclides including Cesium, Cobalt, Uranium and Plutonium, which are steadily being carried across the Pacific via trade winds, with the lion's share landing (usually, along with the rain) in communities within the US and Canada - and in places beyond, throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Ironically, more fallout is presently occurring in North America than in Japan, the scene of the disaster, due to the trade winds, off the Japanese coast.
It has been calculated that in 1 day, there are 666,733.717599549 bequerels of radiation emitted in every cubic foot of the Pacific, per mile.
There are about 63,800,000 miles in the Pacific Ocean. The average depth is about 2.28 miles. There are 145,464,000 cubic miles in the Pacific Ocean. Cesium-137 has a double decay process 94.6% of the time; first beta rays, then gamma rays.
So each cubic foot of the entire Pacific Ocean will have 218.174056838937 Beta radiation events per day and each cubic foot of the entire Pacific Ocean will have 206.392657769635 Gamma radiation events per day.
34 is the average background radiation of the N. American continent.
The Pacific Ocean will have a "radiation fog" in every cubic foot of water that is 12.47 times HIGHER than the average background radiation count of North American continent.

Millions of starfish turning up dead off West Coast
Wednesday, December 18, 2013 by: Jonathan Benson, staff writer (NaturalNews) All up and down the West Coast of the United States, millions of starfish are turning up dead from a mysterious illness that experts have generally dubbed "starfish wasting disease," which involves the creatures' bodies shriveling up and turning into goo. According to reports, this mass die-off event, which is being recorded as far north as Alaska and as far south as Southern California, and everywhere in between, is the largest ever on record.
The mystery surrounding this inexplicable disease was the subject of a recent NBC Nightly News investigation in Monterey Bay, California, home of the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. Two species of starfish that used to thrive in the cove next to the city have completely disappeared, prompting scientists and experts in marine biology to take a closer look at the situation beneath the water's surface.
"It's happened so rapidly that some species are just missing," said marine biologist Pete Raimondi, from the University of California, Santa Cruz, (UCSC) Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Raimondi and his team are in the process of collecting and analyzing starfish samples from around the area to look for patterns that might provide some answers to this enigma.
"Our group is looking to try to map the timing of the onset of the disease and locations of the disease up and down the coast so it will help us point to causes."
Researchers tiptoe around Fukushima disaster, the most likely cause of starfish wasting disease
While previous starfish die-offs reportedly occurred in the area back in the 1980s and 1990s, this latest event, which stretches thousands of miles along the Pacific Coast, is by far the most severe. Instead of just one species being affected, as was the case during previous outbreaks, every species of sea star is implicated this time around.
"Whatever it is that must be in the water is affecting our animals as well," added Dr. Michael Murray from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, explaining to reporters that some of the starfish being held at the aquarium have also fallen victim to the disease.
At this point, experts are investigating things like warmer water, lower oxygen levels and ocean acidification as potential causes of the strange illness, all of which could be legitimate culprits. But the biggest elephant in the room, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe, remains mostly untouched by the scientists investigating the situation.
"I've had probably 100 emails thus far saying, 'What about Fukushima, because of radiation?' ... We haven't ruled that out yet but we're clearly not ruling that in," opined Raimondi in politically correct ambiguity.
Loss of starfish could destroy delicate marine ecosystem, say experts
Regardless of the true cause, there is no denying that starfish wasting disease threatens to obliterate the delicate marine ecosystems of our world's oceans. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are now harboring starfish afflicted with the strange illness, which points to a massive global outbreak.
"These kinds of events are sentinels of change," stated Drew Harvell, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Cornell University. "When you get an event like this, I think everybody will say it's an extreme event and it's pretty important to figure out what's going on."

Government Reacts to Fukushima Radiation Crisis By Raising Acceptable Radiation Standards … Instead of Fixing Anything
Just Like the Financial Crisis, the Gulf Oil Spill, and All Other Crises, Government Covers Up Instead of Addressing the Real Problems
2 weeks after the Fukushima accident, we reported that the government responded to the nuclear accident by trying to raise acceptable radiation levels and pretending that radiation is good for us.
Since then, massive radiation has been released on a daily basis from Fukushima… for years.
And there are so many new leaks that even the mainstream press is starting to admit that Fukushima was never fixed.
Radiation from Fukushima is slamming Tokyo, as well as the West Coast of North America.
Fukushima radiation is showing up in fish on the West Coast of the United States. Scientists are starting to sound the alarm as to additional human deaths and health problems on the U.S. West Coast due to Fukushima radiation, and an epidemic of injuries to sealife.
And it’s not just Fukushima …
An investigation by Associated Press found that 75 percent of all U.S. nuclear sites have leaked radioactive tritium.
In fact, whistleblowers at the Nuclear Regulator Commission say that the risk of a major meltdown at U.S. nuclear reactors is much higher than it was at Fukushima.
And an accident in the U.S. could be a lot larger than in Japan … partly because our nuclear plants hold alot more radioactive material. Radiation could cause illness in huge numbers of Americans, and a major nuclear accident could literally bankrupt America.
So what has the American government done to protect us?
It has pressured the Japanese government to re-start its nuclear program, and is allowing Fukushima seafood to be sold in the U.S.
And U.S. nuclear regulators actually weakened safety standards for U.S. nuclear reactors after the Fukushima disaster.
And as we noted 6 months after Fukushima melted down:
American and Canadian authorities have virtually stopped monitoring airborne radiation, and are not testing fish for radiation. (Indeed, the EPA reacted to Fukushima by raising “acceptable” radiation levels.)And it’s happening again …
***
The failure of the American, Canadian and other governments to test for and share results is making it difficult to hold an open scientific debate about what is happening.
Forbes reported last week:The acting EPA director on Friday signed a revised version of the EPA’s Protective Action Guide for radiological incidents, which critics say radically relaxes the safety guidelines agencies follow in the wake of a nuclear-reactor meltdown, dirty-bomb attack, or other unexpected release of radiation.Medical doctor Helen Caldicott notes:
***
According to Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) [a government whistleblower support group], that means agencies responding to radiation emergencies may permit many more civilian fatalities.
“In soil, the PAGs allow long-term public exposure to radiation in amounts as high as 2,000 millirems,” PEER advocacy director Kirsten Stade said in a press release. “This would, in effect, increase a longstanding 1 in 10,000 person cancer rate to a rate of 1 in 23 persons exposed over a 30-year period.”
The radiation guides (called Protective Action Guides or PAGs) allow cleanup many times more lax than anything EPA has ever before accepted. These guides govern evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, food restrictions and other actions following a wide range of “radiological emergencies.” The Obama administration blocked a version of these PAGs from going into effect during its first days in office. The version given approval late last Friday is substantially similar to those proposed under Bush but duck some of the most controversial aspects:As we noted right after Fukushima happened, this is standard operating procedure for government these days:
- In soil, the PAGs allow long-term public exposure to radiation in amounts as high as 2,000 millirems. This would, in effect, increase a longstanding 1 in 10,000 person cancer rate to a rate of 1 in 23 persons exposed over a 30-year period;
- In water, the PAGs punt on an exact new standard and EPA “continues to seek input on this.” But the thrust of the PAGs is to give on-site authorities much greater “flexibility” in setting aside established limits; and
- Resolves an internal fight inside EPA between nuclear versus public health specialists in favor of the former. The PAGs are the product of Gina McCarthy, the assistant administrator for air and radiation whose nomination to serve as EPA Administrator is taken up this week by the Senate.
- Despite the years-long internal fight, this is the first public official display of these guides. This takes place as Japan grapples with these same issues in the two years following its Fukushima nuclear disaster.
“This is a public health policy only Dr. Strangelove could embrace. If this typifies the environmental leadership we can expect from Ms. McCarthy, then EPA is in for a long, dirty slog,” stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch, noting that the EPA package lacks a cogent rationale, is largely impenetrable and hinges on a series of euphemistic “weasel words.”
“No compelling justification is offered for increasing the cancer deaths of Americans innocently exposed to corporate miscalculations several hundred-fold.”
Reportedly, the PAGs had been approved last fall but their publication was held until after the presidential election. The rationale for timing their release right before McCarthy’s confirmation hearing is unclear.
Since the PAGs guide agency decision-making and do not formally set standards or repeal statutory requirements, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and Superfund, they will go into full effect following a short public comment period. Nonetheless, the PAGs will likely determine what actions take place on the ground in the days, weeks, months and, in some cases, years following a radiological emergency. When the economy imploded in 2008, how did the government respond?
Did it crack down on fraud? Force bankrupt companies to admit that their speculative gambling with our money had failed? Rein in the funny business?
Of course not!
The government just helped cover up how bad things were, used claims of national security to keep everything in the dark, and changed basic rules and definitions to allow the game to continue. See this, this, this and this.
When BP – through criminal negligence – blew out the Deepwater Horizon oil well, the government helped cover it up (the cover up is ongoing).
The government also changed the testing standards for seafood to pretend that higher levels of toxic PAHs in our food was business-as-usual.
So now that Japan is suffering the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl – if not of all time – is the government riding to the rescue to help fix the problem, or at least to provide accurate information to its citizens so they can make informed decisions?
Of course not!
The EPA is closing ranks with the nuclear power industry ….
Indeed, some government scientists and media shills are now “reexamining” old studies that show that radioactive substances like plutonium cause cancer to argue that they help prevent cancer.
It is not just bubbleheads like Ann Coulter saying this. Government scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratories and pro-nuclear hacks like Lawrence Solomonare saying this. [Update.]
In other words, this is a concerted propaganda campaign to cover up the severity of a major nuclear accident by raising acceptable levels of radiation and saying that a little radiation is good for us.

As TEPCO began preparations for the cleaning of the drainage system with tons of leaked radioactive water at the Fukushima power plant,a former employee reveals the reason for so many leaks was cost cutting measures such as using duct tape,Asahi reported.
Yoshitatsu Uechi, auto mechanic and tour-bus driver, worked at the devastated nuclear power plant between July 2 and Dec. 6, 2012, according to Asahi Shimbun report. He was one of the 17 workers from Okinawa Prefecture sent to work at the crippled nuclear plant in 2012 to create new places to store contaminated water.
The earthquake in March 2011 triggered a tsunami that hit Japan’s coast, damaging the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The catastrophe caused the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the facility, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
The water used to cool the reactors has been leaking into the soil and contaminating the ground water on the premises of the nuclear facility, with some escaping into the Pacific Ocean.
The 48 year old Japanese man said that workers were sent to various places in Fukushima, including an area called H3 with high radiation levels.
In one of those cases in October 2012, Uechi was given a task to cover five or six storage tanks without lids in the “E” area close to H3 as it was raining, the Japanese paper reported. When he climbed to the top of the 10-meter-high tank Uechi found white adhesive tape covering an opening of about 30 centimeters. After using a blade to remove the tape he applied a sealing agent on the opening and fit a steel lid fastening it with bolts. According to instructions he was to use four bolts, though the lid had eight bolt holes.
According to the employee, his colleagues later told him that the use of adhesive tape was a usual practice to deal with the problem of sealing in radioactive water.
“I couldn’t believe that such slipshod work was being done, even if it was part of stopgap measures,” Uechi told The Asahi Shimbun.
Among other makeshift cost-cutting measures was the use of second-hand materials. Uechi also said that wire nets were used instead of reinforcing bars during the placement of concrete for storage tank foundations. In addition, waterproof sheets were applied along the joints inside flange-type cylindrical tanks to save on the sealing agent used to join metal sheets of the storage tanks. Rain and snow had washed away the anti-corrosive agent applied around clamping bolts, reducing the sealing effect, Uechi added. According to the Fukushima worker, many of the tanks were later found to be leaking contaminated water.
On Saturday, workers at Fukushima Daiichi began preparations for cleaning the plant’s drainage system that contains more than 20,000 tons of water with high levels of radioactive substances, according to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the plant’s operator responsible for the clean-up.
In August, TEPCO detected 2.35 billion becquerels of cesium per liter in the water located in underground passages which is leaking into the groundwater through cracks in the drainage tunnels. The normal level is estimated at 150 becquerels of cesium per liter, according to EU.
The workers are to set up the special equipment to freeze the ground around the reactors, according to TEPCO. The plan includes plunging tubes carrying a coolant liquid deep into the ground that would freeze the ground solid so that no groundwater could pass through it.
Fallout researcher Christina Consolo told RT that the contaminated water issue at the plant is a very difficult problem to solve.
“The water build-up is an extraordinarily difficult problem in and of itself, and as anyone with a leaky basement knows, water always 'finds a way.’
She added that as “the site has been propped up with duct tape and a kick-stand for over two years. Many of their 'fixes' are only temporary, as there are so many issues to address, and cost always seems to be an enormous factor in what gets implemented and what doesn't.”
Fukushima Radiation a Serious Threat to North American Coast
Added by Brent Matsalla on January 3, 2014.
The Turner Radio Network (TRN) has recently issued a report on the Fukushima radiation being a serious threat to the West Coast of North America and others in the entire northern hemisphere. The report calls for anyone residing on the west coast to immediately start preparations for another round of dangerous atmospheric radiation. The radiation is coming from Reactor 3 in Fukushima’s nuclear disaster site in Japan. The nuclear reactor was damaged in Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster.
Tokyo Electric and Power Company (TEPCO) have confirmed through surveillance cameras that steam has begun to rise out of the severely damaged Reactor 3. This is not the first time steam was observed escaping the facility, there were four sightings of steam rising since December 19th and other reports from back in July 2013.
TEPCO is uncertain what details surround the steam plumes or why the change occurred. They are unable to investigate further due to the lethal radiation levels in building 3.
Some nuclear experts are saying that the steam could signify the start of a spent fuel pool meltdown. Building 3 still contains 89 tons of nuclear fuel that could potentially burn up and head into the atmosphere for North America. After the earthquake, Fukushima had three reactor meltdowns roughly 60 hours after the earthquake as reactors 4, 5, and 6 were currently off-line for maintenance. Building 3 exploded a few days after the earthquake from a build up of hydrogen gas.
Reactor 3 is slightly different from the other Fukushima reactors. It is a mixed-core reactor containing both uranium fuel and a uranium-plutonium oxide fuel mix (MOX). Building 3 still houses 514 MOX fuel rods making up the total of 89 tons.
TEPCO has started the decommissioning of the nuclear plant in November. Workers began the recovery and removal of over 1,500 possibly damaged nuclear fuel rods currently inside Building 4. The operation will see a total of 22 rod assemblies removed, transported, and safely stored with each assembly containing 50 to 70 nuclear fuel rods.
Not all experts are saying there is a serious threat to North America from Fukushima radiation. TEPCO says that radiation levels don’t increase when the steam is being released. Officials at the company say that the steam can be caused by rain or moisture in the air that has found its way to the hot reactor. This would explain the location of the steam arising from the reactor as it was observed escaping from the fifth floor of the building just above the reactor containment structure.
TEPCO also suggests that steam may be created from pellets of nuclear fuel that were possibly ejected during the explosion. If the pellets of fuel landed in the spent fuel pool which is located above the reactor, they have likely started to melt down and are now boiling off the pool’s water. However down-played, this has some worried that the situation can escalate out of hand very quickly with 89 tons of fuel being released into the atmosphere.
The warning that was issued suggested some preparatory measures for those living on the West Coast of North America. People on the western coast should make sure they are up to date with all the news. They also suggest sealing off doors, windows, and any light switches and wall outlets with plastic and tape. Any vents should also be covered and to protect one from the outdoors use TYVEK disposable suits and NIOSH N100-certified filter masks for all family members. Residents of the west coast should also wash obsessively to reduce any possibility of radiation contamination. Radiation will take two to three days to reach the West Coast from Japan.
Years after the disaster, radiation from Fukushima still poses many serious threats to the North American Coast. Threats may continue many years into the future as well. Recently $35 billion has been allocated for the rebirth of Fukushima.

Nuclear Expert: Why Steam From Reactor 3 at Fukushima Matters
January 5, 2014
http://banoosh.com/wp-content/upload...-2-600x333.jpgIn September of 2013, steam was observed coming from Reactor 3.The average temperature in Fukushima was 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) during the day time high.According to Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility (CCNR) spoke about the steam and warned that could be indicative of an under-reported problem.Edwards explained that “nobody quite understands what’s going on . . . in fact there’s been several incidents of steam escaping.”Mehran Keshe, nuclear scientist and founder of the Keshe Foundation, explained that TEPCO is not listening to scientists from all over the world that are in accord that Fukushima is responsible for the poisoning of Japanese citizens through contact with radioactive elements that are causing cancer.Just a few months ago, TEPCO admitted they do not know why the steam began emanating and irresponsibly told the public that it was just a “puddle sitting atop the reactor and was not dangerous.”
TEPCO did report that they have not recorded an increase of radioactivity being released into the environment from Reactor 3. Essentially a steady stream of radioactive material has been seeping into the environment, and the downplay of the potential severity of the situation continued on.
The Japanese government will soon be approving legislation that would make leaking information about Fukushima a state offense, carrying a hefty criminal sentence.
on December 17th of last year, TEPCO began to “remove fuel assemblies from the Reactor 3 Spent Fuel Pool, removal of large-size debris in the Spent Fuel Pool”. Not long after this began, steam once again began to emanate from Reactor 3.
Since December 24th of 2013, reports coming directly from TEPCO’s website have confirmed that steam has been emanating from Rector 3.
The day time high during the 3 days in question was 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit).
Over the course of 3 days, reports continued to claim that no “abnormal plant conditions” have been identified at Rector 3 where the steam has been observed on camera.
Recent commentary on the steam rising from Rector 3 claims that because it is currently winter in “much of the northern hemisphere” that the steam is simply “hot water vapor [being] released daily” from the devastated Fukushima nuclear plant.
Under normal conditions , with temperature differences between the environment and the nuclear plant, this explanation would make sense.
Although the steam rising from Reactor 3 is undeniably more visible during the winter months, it is certainly not just ordinary “hot water vapor” as some media outlets may suggest.
Indeed, the winter weather water vapor theory does not account for TEPCO surveillance cameras recording steam rising from Reactor 3 in the middle of summer, as was shown in this video.
The specific elements contained within the steam should be the focal point of discussion in terms of properly appreciating the potential consequences yet to manifest at Reactor 3.
In 2011, at Reactor 3, the water in the reactor vessel evaporated.
Fuel became uncovered, and heated up to a temperature of 2,300 degrees Celsius.
It mixed with the materials of the structure to form magma called Corium.
The Corium flowed down to the bottom of the reactor vessel, which is made of steel.
According to Japanese investigators, the Corium pierced the reactor vessel before falling on the concrete basement inside the containment.
Questions about how much erosion to the concrete has occurred because of the Corium still remain unanswered.
The steam emanating from Reactor 3 is most assuredly radioactive.
In fact, TEPCO lied at first about Corium melting through concrete and steel casings.
The Institute of Applied Energy (IAE) pointed out that, at least in Reactor 1, the Corium did indeed melt through the barriers, causing the vessel to “tilt”.
Reactor 3 could be showing signs that Corium may be causational to a possible future disaster issue due to the mixture of Corium with the radioactive water which would cause a violent reaction.

Harvey Wasserman, nuclear energy activist, explained that during the 40 years he has been involved in activism, “no one ever talked about the possibility of multiple meltdowns, but that is what occurred at Fukushima.”
Here is a solution to dealing with cumulative effects of low-radiation exposure that has been proven to be useful.
Zeolite , a natural mineral, acts like a magnet and attracts positively-charged particles and metals including radioactive metals because of its crystalline structure.
During Chernobyl, “500,000 tons of Zeolite” was distributed among the most heavily exposed areas.
Chinoptilolite Zeolite is highly effective in treating persons exposed to even low levels of radiation because it a naturally detoxing mineral.
Triple water filtration systems are extremely effective in protecting against harmful radioactive isotopes found in public drinking water.
TEPCO has been caught doctoring the readings and downplay the impact of Fukushima by ordering workers at the cleanup sites “to shield their dosimeter with lead covers to make the integral dose look lower than actual.”
Workers confirmed that “they covered the dosimeters with lead cases.”
TEPCO omitted to the public that leaks resulting in radioactive water being dumped into the Pacific Ocean.
In July of 2013, the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority (JNRA) finally told the press that the leaking of this deadly water from Fukushima had been occurring since the accident.

Fukushima keeps on giving … with new underground nuclear explosions

All these tremors, mini shakes, and earthquakes that You hear emanating from Japan’s Fukushima region are unnerving when you think of what happens when you mix nuclear energy plants and earthquakes. Especially when these tremors are located right beneath the Fukushima nuclear reactors that went into meltdown and have never stopped releasing RADIATION since march 12th of 2011.
Yet this is a staple of nuclear reactors everywhere. Without coolant, fuel rods can overheat and melt. In a serious meltdown, radioactive molten material falls through the floor of the containment vessel into the ground underneath. Couple this molten radiation releasing enriched plutonium core with unstable terrestrial groundswells and you’ve got a series of nuclear explosions going off today in Fukushima.
Because in the intervening three years the molten cores have sunk down and burrowed themselves deeply beneath the Fukushima
Nuclear plant continuously exploding and releasing lethal radiation into the ground, underground aquifer, and into the Pacific ocean. Now all of the earth’s elements are connected and what gets into the ground in Japan might end up in the water lapping your feet in the Pacific shores of Los Angeles where the surfing is great on the Malibu beaches or out in Zuma beach, but who cares?
Right?
The reality is even more sinister. Our Environmental Parliament nuclear scientists report that it is these very same Fukushima nuclear melt down cores and the spent nuclear fuel cells that are mixed up in the explosions of march 2011, and are still now setting off the nuclear explosions that in turn register as minor Richter scale seismic events, activities, and tremors, in the seismographs around the world.
Share this new knowledge, and understand that the Nuclear Industry is primarily a nuclear weapons industry and when you place nuclear plants that along with electricity produce enriched plutonium which then is classified as ‘spent fuel’ and placed in cooling pools to be preserved for some future use [???] you are courting disaster. And with the already unstable terrestrial groundswells in Fukushima — you’ve got a series of nuclear bombs exploding off continuously in the intervening three years since the March 12th 2011 initial explosion. Of course now the plutonium molten cores have passed the criticallity phase, have gone nuclear, and have burrowed themselves deeply beneath the Fukushima Nuclear plant.
That could be well enough except that they have been exploding all the while. Continuously exploding and releasing heavy radiation radio-isotops into the ground, underground aquifer, and into the Pacific ocean. The earth’s underground channels transfer all these elements all around and one can only guess where the radiation will turn up in massive deadly doses.
Proof of that series of cataclysmic nuclear events — akin to a continuous underground nuclear bomb series of explosions — has been received from Russia’s Department of Defense just a few hours ago.
Here it goes:
Underground Nuclear Explosions at Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Plant as were reported by Russia’s Defense Ministry.
An edict issued from the Office of the President of Russia emanating from MoD, was sent today to all the Ministries of the Russian Government ordering that all “past, present and future” information relating to Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster now be rated at the highest classification level “Of Special Importance” states that this condition is “immediately and urgently needed” due to a series of underground nuclear explosions occurring at this crippled nuclear plant on the 31st of December as confirmed by the Ministry of Defense (MoD).
“Of Special Importance” is Russia’s highest classification level and refers to information which, if released, would cause damage to the entire Russian Federation.
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was a catastrophic failure at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant on the 11th of March 2011. The failure occurred when the plant was hit by the 9.0 magnitude Tōhoku earthquake that disabled it’s cooling systems and further incapacitated by the sea borne tsunami triggered from the earthquake.
The plant began releasing substantial amounts of radioactive materials beginning on the 12th of March 2011, thus becoming the largest nuclear disaster since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the second (with Chernobyl) to measure at the highest Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES).
According to this report, MoD “assests” associated with the Red Banner Pacific Fleet detected two “low-level” underground atomic explosions occurring in the Fukushima disaster zone on 31st of December 2013, the first measuring 5.1 magnitude in intensity, followed by a smaller 3.6 magnitude explosion moments later. The MoD further reports that the 5.1 magnitude event corresponds to the energy equivalent in megatons of TNT of 0.0005, while the 3.6 magnitude event equals 0.0000005.
As a comparison, the MoD states that the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 by the United States released the equivalent of 16 Kilotons = 0.016 megatons of TNT, about the energy equivalent of a magnitude 6 earthquake, and the largest hydrogen bomb ever detonated was the Tsar bomb, a device exploded by the Soviet Union on 30 October 1961, with an energy equivalent of about 50 megatons of TNT.
Important to note, this report continues, was that the architect of Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 3, Uehara Haruo, warned on 17 November 2011 warned that a “China Syndrome” (aka: Hydrovolcanic Explosion) was “inevitable” due to the melted atomic fuel that had escaped the container vessel and was now burning through the earth.
The MoD further reports that evidence that these underground nuclear explosions were about to occur began after mysterious steam plumes were first spotted on 19th December for a short period of time, then again on 24th, 25th, 27th of December, and confirmed by the report Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) owner and operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant, published on its website.
Most curious to note, this report continues, is that the United States appears to have had a more advanced notice of these underground nuclear explosions as evidenced by their purchase earlier this month (6th of December 2013) of 140 million doses of potassium iodine, the compound that protects the thyroid gland of the human body from radioactive poisoning in the aftermath of severe nuclear accidents. This iodine is to be delivered before February 2014.
With experts now estimating that the wave of radiation from Fukushima will be 10-times bigger than all of the radiation from the entire world’s nuclear tests throughout history combined, and with new reports stating that dangerous radiation levels have been detected in snows found in Texas, Colorado and Missouri, this MoD report warns the US, indeed, is going to face the severest consequences of this unprecedented, and unstoppable, nuclear disaster.
And this radiation fallout is not limited just to human beings since this nuclear disaster is unfolding but to all biological systems, and living things.
As new reports come in from the United States’ western coastal areas we become aware that we are now detailing with the mass deaths of fish, crustaceans, sea mammals, whales, seals, sea lions, polar bears, bald eagles, sea stars, turtles, king and sockeye salmon, herring, anchovies, and sardines — all due to the Fukishima nuclear accident radiation.
As to the American people being allowed to know the full and horrific mass death event now unfolding around them, this report warns, it’s not to be. As the FEMA and other response organizations of the Federal government have in effect, ordered all of their mainstream news media organizations not to report it. This was recently confirmed by former MSNBC host Cenk Uygur who was told not to warn the public about the danger posed by the meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant during his time as a host on the cable network.
And with Russian experts now warning that Fukushima nuclear radiation pollution spreads all over the Earth since large amounts of fish, seaweeds, and everything living in the ocean has already been polluted, that these products are the main danger for mankind as they end up being eaten by the people on a massive scale.
This report warns that Putin’s order to classify all information relating to this nuclear mass death event “Of Special Importance” is vital to protect the economic and social stability interests of the Russian Federation as this global catastrophe continues to worsen by the day.
Yours,
Pano
PS:
The Mainstream News Media reported these underground nuclear explosions from Fukushima as minor earthquakes, thus explaining away the tremors resulting from these nuclear events.
So your expectation to know more about the state of health of your world and how to protect your own personal health, that of your family, and save your life. is thwarted by an all powerful collusive nuclear industry and it’s dissemination of misinformation about the daft attempts at stopping a nuclear core meltdown disaster.
We know it’s unstoppable now and so the one thing You can do is this:
Take your iodine and keep on smiling, sharing and networking. That’s about all we can do right now.

TV: “Massive radioactivity release” at Fukushima going on for almost 3 years now; Visible steam “just the tip of the iceberg” — NHK: Containment vessels are ‘broken’ (VIDEOS)
NHK, Jan. 4, 2014: [Underground] tunnels are believed to be one of the sources of radioactive materials that are polluting the groundwater at the facility on a large scale. [...] A large amount of highly radioactive water has accumulated beneath the plant. [...] TEPCO will set up radiation monitoring equipment at various hot spots on the floors of reactor buildings this month. The readings will be used to support the decontamination work by robots that will follow. TEPCO officials say they will also study how to remotely locate and repair holes in the reactor containment vessels. The vessels were broken in the nuclear accident.

The Big Picture, RT, Jan. 3, 2014 (at 5:00 in) — Kevin Kamps, Radioactive waste watchdog at Beyond Nuclear: It’s the weather conditions that make the steam visible, but what people need to realize is that we’re almost three years into this thing — those releases are happening every day. Those releases atmospherically [and] into the ocean are happening every day, they have been for three years, so that is the massive radioactivity release that’s going on. Once in a while it becomes more visible because of atmospheric conditions […] we’re seeing this heated water coming out of Unit 3 – it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

RADIATION EFFECTS IN U.S. FROM JAPAN NUKE ACCIDENT
RADIATION EFFECTS IN U.S. FROM JAPAN NUKE ACCIDENT http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...rintButton.png
Tuesday, 26 November 2013 16:14 November 25, 2013 -- (TRN http://www.TurnerRadioNetwork.com ) -- Radiation reaching the United States from the nuclear meltdowns in Fukushima, Japan is causing significant harm; affecting newborn Human babies in California, Pacific Ocean sea life, and even inland wild life. Radiation is causing massive die-offs of sea life as well as mammals, birds and reptiles inland. High percentages of inland animals that are not already dead are losing their fur, bleeding from lesions all over their bodies and failing to reproduce. Radiation contamination of sea food is already confirmed and contamination of the inland food supply is now taking place as rain carries radiation from the Pacific ocean to inland farms. U.S. Government propagandists are claiming everything is all right - but they aren't even monitoring radiation levels - while scientists outside the government are warning the worst is yet to come. Newly released government projections (contained in this article) show parts of Hawaii, Alaska and the entire west coast of North America may become uninhabitable due to radioactive Cesium-137 making its way toward us in the Pacific.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was a nuclear energy accident at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, caused by an earthquake and, later, a tsunami (tidal wave) generated by that earthquake on 11 March 2011. The tsunami caused equipment failures and without this equipment, coolant stopped flowing into the reactor cores allowing them to get so hot, they melted. During the meltdowns, radioactive materials were released into the air and water beginning on March 12, 2011. Fukushima is the largest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster of 1986 and the second disaster (along with Chernobyl) to measure Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
The plant comprised six separate boiling water reactors originally designed by General Electric (GE) and maintained by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...ors_BEFORE.jpg
At the time of the earthquake, reactor 4 had been De-fueled and reactors 5 and 6 were in cold shutdown for planned maintenance. Immediately after the earthquake, following government regulations, the remaining reactors 1, 2 and 3 shut down automatically, inserting control rods in what is termed a "SCRAM event." Following this, emergency diesel generators came online to power electronics and coolant systems which operated right up until the tsunami.
The tsunami arrived 50 minutes after the initial earthquake. The 13 meter (40 Feet) tall tsunami tidal wave overwhelmed the plant's seawall, which was only 10 meters (30 feet) high.
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...romTsunami.jpg
The tsunami water flooded rooms in which the emergency generators were housed. The flooded diesel generators failed, cutting power to the critical pumps that must continuously circulate coolant water through a reactor to keep the fuel rods from melting down. Even though the control rods had come down and the nuclear reactions had halted, the fuel rods remained red hot following the SCRAM event. In fact, the rods remained hot enough to melt themselves down when no adequate cold sink was available.
Once the diesel generators failed from the tsunami flooding, secondary emergency cooling pumps kicked-in; they were run by batteries. One day later, the batteries died for the secondary emergency pumps. The pumps stopped and the reactors began to overheat due to lack of water to cool the fuel rods. As workers struggled to supply power to the reactors coolant systems and restore power to their control rooms, the overheating reactors released hydrogen gas; an incredibly explosive gas. A number of hydrogen-air chemical explosions occurred, the first in Unit 1, on March 12 and the last in Unit 4, on March 15. These explosions tore the reactor buildings apart, and did severe damage to whatever cooling systems remained; making them all but useless.
EXPLOSIONS OBLITERATE THREE REACTORS
The first explosion took place on March 12. The remaining explosions took place by March 15. The results are shown below:
CONGRESSIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE EXPLAINS THE DANGER
In 2012, the Congressional Research Service reported to Congress as follows: "As it approaches the west coast of North America, the North Pacific Current splits into the southward California Current and the northward Alaska Current. Although these currents have the potential for bringing radiation from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident to U.S. waters, their flow is slow ... Regardless of the slow flow, radioactive contaminants with long half-lives (e.g., cesium-137, with a half-life of about 30 years) could still pose concerns if transported over long distances by ocean currents." Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution advised that radiation levels in seafood should continue to be monitored ... there remains the potential for a corridor of highly contaminated water leading away from Japan and a very patchy distribution of contaminated fish; extensive monitoring will determine the exact dispersion of these radioactive contaminants. [...] It has been suggested that cesium-137 may move up the food chain and become concentrated in fish muscle or that radiation hot spots may occur. Another potential concern is related to accumulation of strontium-90 in fish bone [...] additional radiation from [Fukushima] might eventually also be detected in North Pacific waters under U.S. jurisdiction, even months after its release. Regardless of slow ocean transport, the long half-life of radioactive cesium isotopes means that radioactive contaminants could remain a valid concern for years.
FOOD CONTAMINATION
On March 30, 2011, Mr. Lake Barrett, a former official with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and now an adviser to TEPCO, said "The environmental release is the growing challenge; you’re going to read more and more about it in the paper. Wait until the first cesium-137 shows up in Alaska salmon, which is only a matter of time." Mr. Barrett's warning was prescient.
In 2012, out of twenty Pacific Tuna fish caught and tested from various points in the ocean, one hundred percent (100%) tested positive for radiation contamination! Researchers at Stanford University studied samples from 20 blue-fin tuna caught off California between May and August 2012 and said they detected radioactive cesium. They concluded the source of the contamination was the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.
In British Columbia, Canada, Pacific Herring have been found to be bleeding from their eyes, mouths, fins and tails. Independent fisheries scientist Alexandra Morton is raising concerns about a "disease" she says is spreading through Pacific herring causing fish to hemorrhage. “I did a beach seine on Malcolm Island [near Port McNeill on northern Vancouver Island] and I got approximately 100 of these little herring and they were not only bleeding from their fins, but their bellies, their chins, their eyeballs. “It was 100 per cent … I couldn’t find any that weren’t bleeding to some degree."
Morton dragged up several hundred of the fish and found the trouble had spread – instead of their usual silver color the fish had eyes, tails, underbellies, gills and faces plastered with blood. “I have never seen fish that looked this bad,” In June, the affected fish were only found in eastern Johnstone Strait, but have since spread to Alert Bay and Sointula, she said.
COVER-UP BY TEPCO OF MASSIVE AND ONGOING RADIATION LEAKING INTO PACIFIC OCEAN
On July 22, 2013, more than two years after the incident, it was revealed that the plant has been leaking 300 Tons of heavily contaminated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean EVERY DAY since the accident of March 11, 2011, something long suspected by local fishermen and independent investigators. TEPCO had previously denied this was happening and the situation prompted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe to order the government to step in. It was then revealed how -- and how much -- radiation is pouring into the Pacific Ocean:
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...ukuGraphic.jpg
On August 20, 2013 in a further incident, it was announced that an ADDITIONAL 300 metric tons of heavily contaminated water had also leaked from a storage tank at the plant and had gone into ground water and into the Pacific. What this means is that the water pouring out of that plant today is just as poisonous as the water that came out the first day this accident took place; and it has been that way for over 1,000 days -- and counting!
Scientists at the University of Alaska are concerned because some radiation has arrived in northern Alaska and along its west coast. That's raised concern over contamination of fish and wildlife. More may be heading toward coastal communities like Haines and Skagway.
Douglas Dasher, a researcher at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, says radiation levels in Alaskan waters could reach Cold War levels. "The levels they are projecting in some of the models are in the ballpark of what they saw in the North Pacific in the 1960s," he said. Those levels occurred after the US conducted open-air blasts of nuclear weapons in the south Pacific.
This contamination is taking place because the major ocean currents running east from Japan, split as they approach the North American continent; part of the current heads north toward Alaska, the other part heads south toward the U.S. west coast. Those currents are carrying highly radioactive water from the Fukushima disaster throughout the Pacific ocean.
NOVEMBER, 2013: SHARP INCREASE IN U.S. EFFECTS
In November, 2013, enormous amounts of Star Fish on the sea floor off the California coast have begun dissolving into mushy piles of white goo. During an ocean dive Thursday morning, November 7, 2013 off the coast of Santa Cruz, Pete Raimondi [UCSC ecology professor] watched two halves of a broken sea star ravaged by a “wasting syndrome” walk away from each other. Not long after, they would turn into mushy piles of goo, disintegrated by a disease that has so far perplexed scientists. It appears the syndrome is impacting as many as 10 sea star species up and down the West Coast, wiping out entire populations in certain areas. “They can go from great -- to pieces -- in 12 hours,” said Raimondi. The Pacific Ocean is in the middle of a cooling trend, so biologists are at a loss to explain the outbreak. Others, speaking to Turner Radio Network on condition of anonymity fearing retaliation from authorities, said the cause has already been identified: radiation poisoning. These biologists have been threatened with losing their jobs if they reveal this publicly.
On November 11, 2013 FOX NEWS reported that since June, researchers have seen the disease spread from as far as British Columbia, Canada, down through California and, within the past year, from Maine through New Jersey. The scientists tracking the disease find this simultaneous bi-coastal infection especially alarming. “There is no direct route to get from Providence to Seattle,” Gary Wessel, a molecular biologist at Brown University. However, when one considers the evaporation of radiation-contaminated water from the Pacific, being carried inland by weather systems, and the jet stream then carrying those weather systems to the east coast, the explanation becomes obvious.
On November 23, 2013, thousands of dead sea birds began washing up on the shores of Alaska. Many of the carcases were broken open and bleeding.
The toxic effects of radiation on sea life is getting so terrible it is actually causing sea creatures to flee the deep ocean and head toward the shores. On November 24, the New York Times reported: It began with the anchovies, miles and miles of them ... in the waters of Monterey Bay. Then the sea lions came, by the thousands ... then pelicans ... bottlenose dolphins in groups of 100 or more have been spotted. But it was the whales that astounded even longtime residents — more than 200 humpbacks ... and, on a recent weekend, a pod of 19 rowdy Orcas ... the water in every direction roiled with mammals. For almost three months, Monterey and nearby coastal areas have played host to a mammoth convocation of sea life that scientists here say is unprecedented in their memories ... never that anyone remembers have there been this many or have they stayed so long. Last month, so many anchovies crowded into Santa Cruz harbor that the oxygen ran out, leading to a major die-off.
Marine researchers PUBLICLY say they are baffled about the reason for the anchovy explosion. PRIVATELY, they tell the Turner Radio Network the cause is Fukushima radiation but they've been told to keep quiet to avoid causing a public panic.
INLAND WILDLIFE BADLY AFFECTED
According to a November report by the U.S. Geological Survey: Alopecia (loss of fur) and skin lesions were recently observed in polar bears off the northern coast of Alaska. According to the Alaska Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network since the spring of 2012, a total of 23 polar bears from Barrow, Deadhorse and Kaktovik have been identified with variable degrees of hair loss/ thinning, inflamed and crusting skin, and oral lesions. The prevalence of these symptoms appears to be in about 28% of observed animals. The concurrent presence of hair loss in seals, walrus and polar bears has suggested a possible connection between the events. Biologists in Alaska have observed a high rate of non-viable eggs in nests of greater white-fronted geese. Northern fur seals and soil samples in Alaska are also showing unusual signs. In another study, the Alaska Science Center has documented surprisingly high mortality (20–30 percent) of adult female musk ox during mid- to late summer in northwestern Alaska.
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...h_alopecia.jpg
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/im...ndBleeding.JPG
In Montana, Wyoming and inland to Minnesota, the effects of Fukushima are already being seen. According to the Billings (Montana) Gazette, Nov. 18, 2013: Jared Jansen said, he and his father, Mike, have seen up to 100 dead deer at a time along the Musselshell River. ... die-offs have whittled the once hardy deer herds down to a handful. “I’ve only seen three does this year. . . It used to be when I was haying along the river, early in the morning, I’d see 200 to 500 head in the meadows.” The reasons attributed to these die-offs sound like something out of a science fiction thriller: epizootic hemorrhagic disease, sylvatic plague, bluetongue, brucellosis, chytrid, chronic wasting disease ... Yet the all-too-real afflictions threaten to reduce the populations of wild mammals, birds and reptiles across Montana, Wyoming and other regions. “There is a general consensus among scientists that we are seeing more disease,” said Jonathan Sleeman, director of the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wis. . . so many diseases afflicting such a wide variety of animals ... A study is being conducted in northwestern Montana to examine the possible causes." Others within the USGS who asked to remain anonymous for fear of their jobs say that radiation is the cause, but the government won't admit it because there is nothing they can do about it.
In Minnesota, the Independent Record newspaper Oct. 31, 2013 reports Moose in the northern United States are dying ... The die-off is most dire in Minnesota, where ecologists say moose could be gone within a decade. Concerns have prompted a 10-year study of moose in Montana. It’s not just in Montana, either. An aerial survey of moose in northeastern Minnesota earlier this year showed a 52 percent drop in population, which prompted the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to completely call off the 2013 moose hunting season. In various regions of British Columbia [Canada], populations have declined from 20 to 70 percent in recent years.
HUMAN BABIES IN CALIFORNIA ALREADY SHOWING SIGNS OF RADIATION EXPOSURE
A new study of the effects of tiny quantities of radioactive fallout from Fukushima on the health of babies born in California shows a significant excess of hypothyroidism caused by the radioactive contamination traveling 5,000 miles across the Pacific. The article will be published next week in the peer-reviewed journal Open Journal of Pediatrics. Congenital hypothyroidism is a rare but serious condition normally affecting about one child in 2,000, and one that demands clinical intervention - the growth of children suffering from the condition is affected if they are left untreated. All babies born in California are monitored at birth for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels in blood, since high levels indicate hypothyroidism.
Joe Mangano and Janette Sherman of the Radiation and Public Health Project in New York, and Christopher Busby, guest researcher at Jacobs University, Bremen, examined congenital hypothyroidism (CH) rates in newborns using data obtained from the State of California over the period of the Fukushima explosions.
Their results are published in their paper Changes in confirmed plus borderline cases of congenital hypothyroidism in California as a function of environmental fallout from the Fukushima nuclear meltdown. The researchers compared data for babies exposed to radioactive Iodine-131 and born between March 17th and Dec 31st 2011 with unexposed babies born in 2011 before the exposures plus those born in 2012.
Confirmed cases of hypothyroidism, defined as those with TSH level greater than 29 units increased by 21% in the group of babies that were exposed to excess radioactive Iodine in the womb. The same group of children had a 27% increase in 'borderline cases'.
RADIATION ALERTS ISSUED FOR MULTIPLE U.S. CITIES - NO MEDIA COVERAGE
The Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center (NETC) provides free radiation monitoring information to the public from about 300 private monitoring sites and many more government monitoring sites like "RADnet" from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the past ten days, the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center (NETC) has issued radiation alerts for several major U.S. cities after background radiation levels in those cities suddenly spiked to record high levels or jumped to fifty percent higher than normal in the "Counts Per Minute" (CPM) of deadly Gamma Radiation in the 600 - 800 keV range. Those Alerts are known as "RADCON - 5" Alerts because the radiation has climbed to the highest level on the 5 step scale. Despite the issuance of RADCON-5 Alerts, no mass-media in ANY of those cities, bothered to report the condition. Cities affected were / are:

COMPARISON TO READINGS AT FUKUSHIMA
Now that you've seen the numbers here in the U.S., take a look at the reading at Fukushima itself:

AREAS OF THE USA, CANADA, EXPECTED TO BECOME UNINHABITABLE
The graphic below, (File is 14.4 MB May Take Time to Load) produced by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) an agency of the United States Government, shows the MONTHLY predicted spread and potency of radioactive Cesium-137 from Fukushima throughout the Pacific Ocean. The GIF runs from March, 2011 when the disaster took place, all the way through to the year 2041.
Based upon these projections, northernmost Hawaii will be uninhabitable by January, 2015. The government is concealing this to protect real estate values and tourism because there's nothing the government can do to stop the radiation.
By October, 2016, all of southern Alaska including the Aleutian Islands will be uninhabitable. The government is concealing this to protect the fishing industry because there's nothing the government can do to stop the radiation.
By June, 2017, the entire west coast of Canada and the United States will be uninhabitable. Both the U.S. and Canadian governments are concealing this to avoid a panic, to preserve real estate values in some of the wealthiest areas of both countries, to preserve farming and fishing industries in those areas from being driven out of business when consumers shun their products due to radiation contamination and because there is nothing the governments can do to stop the radiation.
(Note: The government projection below uses only 1/3rd the amount of Cesium that was actually released initially and DOES NOT take into account the 300 metric tons of contaminated water which has leaked into the Pacific Ocean EVERY DAY since the accident in March, 2011.)

EXPERTS: THE WORST IS YET TO COME
Beginning on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, TEPCO is to begin attempting to remove the 1,534 used fuel rods that remain inside Reactor #4. These rods contain pellets of nuclear materials like Uranium and Plutonium as well as other radioactive materials. Experts say that the fuel rods may snap during the removal process because the reactor pool is physically damaged and the rods may not be able to come out perfectly straight. In the event a rod snaps, and fuel pellets fall out from inside the rod onto the floor of the reactor pool, they could begin reacting with each other on the floor of the pool. They would become self-sustaining mini reactors, completely uncontrollable, boiling-off the pool water, thereby allowing the remaining fuel rods to overheat and meltdown and releasing tons of radioactive gases into the atmosphere. One byproduct of such a scenario would be large amounts of hydrogen gas. The temporary structure built around Reactor #4 after the earthquake, would hold enough of that hydrogen gas to make the equivalent of a nuclear explosion once the gas ignites.
Experts say that if such a scenario takes place as TEPCO is removing the remaining fuel rods, "it is bye-bye Japan and people on the west coast of the United States and Canada would have only DAYS to evacuate to avoid lethal doses of radiation."
Strange that the mass-media inside the United States is failing to report this.

Fukushima: We are not Being Given the Full Story
http://cdn.freedomoutpost.com/wp-con...4/01/fujex.jpg Share627 Tweet42 Share833 11 Email18
We are four days into the New Year. For those who celebrated voraciously, hangovers are gone, heads are cleared and all are back into the routine of daily life. One of those routines for many is checking your Facebook page or other social media network. Now, if you are like me, you get what seems to be some pretty incredible posts, links or announcements so you may skim over them while uttering to yourself about the incredible amount of misinformation that mires the information super highway that is the internet.
Actually, I did the same thing to a posting thinking that if it were actually true, major news media outlets would pick it up. What was I thinking? Since that did not happen, I began to do my own research into this seemingly farcical piece. Needless to say, over one dozen windows ended up opened on my internet browser trying to discover where this all originated, is it true and what does it mean.
Here is the story to which I am referring, “Underground Nuclear Explosion At Crippled Japan Atomic Plant Shocks World.” Upon looking at the “source” from the bottom, it directs to a page called “What does it mean.” You can put it in any search engine and find the page, which then leads you to the same story.
After doing my own research, I am left with two burning questions – What in the Sam Hill is going on at Fukushima? And, why in the devil are the American public not being informed about recent developments?
Now, follow along with me here for just a moment. We all know that Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) initially lied to the international community about the severity of the accident at the Fukushima-Daichi nuclear plant in March 11, 2011. We now know that reactors 1 and 3 had meltdowns and reactors 1,3, and 4 experienced hydrogen explosions. We also know that Japan has enacted legislation that is intended to protect state secrets which might help in hiding “revelations about government mismanagement that helped trigger the Fukushima nuclear accident” and make leaking information about Fukushima a state offense, carrying a hefty criminal sentence. We are familiar with the stories regarding the 300 tons of water per day entering the Pacific Ocean since the accident. Reports of dying sea creatures along America’s Pacific coast have surfaced. A man sailing from Japan across the Pacific reported the ocean seeming dead or lifeless. Recently, it has been reported that our government has ordered millions of doses of Potassium Iodide. Remember the earthquakes around the ring of fire that has produced a new land mass? Yes, that was near Tokyo and a professor was urging attention to be paid then.
The 2011 interview with Michio Kaku, a respected professor and physicist, helps explain the severity. Pay close attention to what he says about America’s own Indian Point Nuclear Plant located in New York. A disaster at Indian Point could cost $200 billion. Also, remember from this interview that the federal government underwrites the insurance for all US nuclear plants since no insurance company will insure them; the federal government money comes from taxpayers. Did you catch the part where Obama is supporting the establishment of new nuclear power facilities for the US?
ENEnews, established after the Fukushima disaster to report the latest energy-related developments, reports that from December 19 – 27, 2013, steam was observed coming from the Fukushima Unit 3 reactor building. The same site reports the steam is from constant radioactive releases – coming from hot rubble, not new explosions. Just as recently as January 2, 2014, ENEnews posted that a nuclear expert indicated the Fukushima reactor cores melted into the ground and that radioactive material is getting washed out into the Pacific Ocean. On January 3, 2014, it was reported why the steam coming from Fukushima Unit Reactor 3 was important; “reactor 3 could be showing signs that Corium may be causational to a possible future disaster issue to the mixture of Corium with the radioactive water which would cause a violent reaction.”
Now, not being a nuclear physicist or scientist, I cannot attest to the truth of what will or will not happen with regards to this situation as the technical information amounts to speaking to me in a foreign language. What I can say is the information that I have highlighted, except for the initial story that started my search, should be taken as accurate and truthful. Nuclear disasters don’t happen and then are miraculously under control and stopped because the news media ceases to cover it. The Fukushima disaster is still active, is still potentially catastrophic and will remain so until it is under control; however, some experts think a disaster of this magnitude will not be able to be controlled.
On December 28, 2013, Turner Radio Network issued an urgent news flash: “Persons residing on the west coast of North America should IMMEDIATELY begin preparing for another possible onslaught of dangerous atmospheric radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster site in Japan. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) says radioactive steam has suddenly begun emanating from previously exploded nuclear reactor building #3 at the Fukushima disaster site in Japan. TEPCO says they do not know why this is happening and cannot go into the building to see what’s happening due to damage and lethal radiation levels in that building. Experts say this could be the beginning of a “spent fuel pool criticality (meltdown)” involving up to 89 TONS of nuclear fuel burning up into the atmosphere and heading to North America.”
So, what does all this mean? It means something very serious is occurring at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear plant that suffered a catastrophic nuclear disaster almost 3 years ago and there is virtually no information being presented through main stream media. It means, America, we are on our own when it comes to finding out important information that has the potential to impact our country and our very lives; therefore, we must take the precautions we deem necessary to protect ourselves.

Has Fukushima’s Radioactive Wave Already Hit California?
Health officials confirm spike in radiation on San Francisco beach but have no answers

Predictions that Fukushima’s radioactive ocean plume would hit the west coast of the U.S. sometime in 2014 may have already come to pass, with a new video showing Geiger counter readings of background radiation at a beach in San Francisco over five times the safe level.

Published on Dec 24, 2013
This shocking video was taken December 23rd 2013 with a quality Geiger Counter south of Pacifica State Beach (Surfers Beach) California.
Background radiation reading is 30 CPM. Near the ocean it's 150 CPM. The moister coming from the ocean waves seems to be what makes the Geiger Counter jump up 5X. This is not normal at all. More thorough readings need to be done. Where is the useless government/media? Thanks to rense.com for originally publishing this video.

NOTE: The Radiation Network website, for example, uses a threshold warning level of 100 CPM, mainly because it is unusual to observe levels of 100 or higher without something more going on in the area than just background level.
From the Inspector Geiger Counter's user manual: "CPM (or CPS) and total counts are the most direct methods of measurement; mR/hr (or uSv/hr) is calculated using a conversion factor optimized for Cesium-137, so this mode is less accurate for other radionuclides, unless you have calibrated the "geiger counter" for a specific radionuclide using an appropriate source. It is more appropriate to measure alpha and beta activity using CPM than using mR/hr. Conversion for alpha and beta emitters is calcuated differently, and the "geiger counters" reading in mR/hr may not be accurate."

Days after a YouTube video emerged showing background radiation at a Coastside beach reaching over 150 micro-REM per hour, Health officials in San Mateo County confirmed the spike but said they were “befuddled” as to its cause.http://static.prisonplanet.com/p/ima.../060114rad.jpgImage: Extent of Fukushima radiation by 2014. (Rossi et al./Deep-Sea Research).
However, officials dismissed the possibility that the readings could be linked to Fukushima radiation reaching the west coast despite forecasts by experts last summer that radioactive particles from Fukushima would reach U.S. coastal waters in 2014.
The video shows a man measuring radiation readings at different spots on a beach south of Pillar Point Harbor. Background radiation in the areas immediately surrounding the beach are normal, but once the man approaches the water itself, the radiation spikes to at least 500 per cent safe levels and the Geiger counter’s alarm goes off.
The man behind the video claims that on his previous visit to the same beach, radiation readings were 13 times the safe level.
“In the following days, other amateurs with Geiger counters began posting similar videos online,” reports the Half Moon Bay Review. “The videos follow other alarming news last month that starfish were mysteriously disintegrating along the West Coast, a trend that has not been linked yet to any cause.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Public Health are now investigating the cause of the radiation and more information is expected to be released this week.
While officials will almost certainly downplay the situation in order to prevent panic, it’s important to remember that genuine public health crises are virtually always preceded by government duplicity. This article was posted: Monday, January 6, 2014 at 9:57 am
TEPCO and the Japanese government have repeatedly been caught lying in their efforts to downplay the scale of the Fukushima disaster. In September it was confirmed that radiation readings around the power plant were 18 times higher than previously reported by TEPCO. After a tank leaked 300 tonnes of toxic water in August, groundwater radiation readings at the plant soared to 400,000 becquerels per litre, the highest reading since the nuclear accident occurred in March 2011.
EPA officials in America also lied in the weeks after 9/11 when they told rescue workers and the general public that the air at ground zero was safe to breathe. According to insiders, EPA officials knew that the dust in the air was laden with asbestos but chose to cover up the truth, leading to at least 20,000 ground zero workers suffering debilitating illnesses and numerous deaths.
Mainstream media outlets have also largely toed the line on Fukushima despite overwhelming evidence of a cover-up of the true scale of the crisis by Japanese authorities. Former MSNBC host Cenk Uygur was told not to warn the public about the danger posed by the meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant during his time as a host on the cable network.
Concerns that the federal government is preparing for some form of nuclear emergency have heightened after it was revealed that the Department of Health and Human Services has ordered 14 million doses of potassium iodide, the compound that protects the body from radioactive poisoning in the aftermath of severe nuclear accidents, to be delivered before the beginning of February.

What I find interesting they ignored the radiation for as long as possible... then when some guy goes out there and proves the point that there is an accumulation of radiation that could cause health issues.....they are now trying to say that it could be from anywhere.....when San Fran is a direct line of ocean current contact from Fukushima and it is leaking tons of contamination daily......long story short, they think we are a bunch of idiots who will believe anything.....Now days Greed supercededs everything and that means people's health as well. People need to be thinking for themselves and not believing anything MSM or the government says at this point IMO.

Canada Busted Covering Up Spikes In Fukushima Radiation
January 6th, 2014
Falsely Stated That There Were No Unusual Radiation Levels
(GlobalResearch) - December 5th, 2013 – The governments of Japan, America and Canada have covered up the severity of the Fukushima crisisever since it started in March 2011.
They’ve cut way back on radiation monitoring after the Fukushima meltdown, underplayed the amount of radiation pumped out by Fukushima, and raised acceptable radiation levels … rather than fixing anything.
For example, Straight.com reports:
http://www.straight.com/files/styles...ation%201a.pngA study by several researchers, including Health Canada [the department of the government of Canada with responsibility for national public health] monitoring specialist Ian Hoffman, reveals a sharp spike in radiation over southwest B.C. on March 20, 2011.http://www.straight.com/files/styles...ation%204a.png
***
In 2011, investigative journalist Alex Roslin reported in the Georgia Straight that a Health Canada monitoring station in Sidney had detected radioactive iodine-131 levels up to 300 times normal background levels.
In 2011, Health Canada was declaring on its website that the quantities of radiation reaching Canada did not pose any health risk to Canadians.
“The very slight increases in radiation across the country have been smaller than the normal day-to-day fluctuations from background radiation,” Health Canada said at the time.
Roslin maintained in his article that Health Canada’s own data contradicted that assertion. Below, you can see more of what the researchers stated in the PowerPoint presentation about the radiation plume.
http://www.straight.com/files/styles...ation%205a.png
Here’s what Roslin wrote in 2011:
After Japan’s Fukushima catastrophe, Canadian government officials reassured jittery Canadians that the radioactive plume billowing from the destroyed nuclear reactors posed zero health risks in this country.Similarly, the Nelson Daily reported in 2012:
In fact, there was reason to worry. Health Canada detected large spikes in radioactive material from Fukushima in Canadian air in March and April at monitoring stations across the country.
***
For 22 days, a Health Canada monitoring station in Sidney detected iodine-131 levels in the air that were up to 300 times above the normal background levels. Radioactive iodine levels shot up as high as nearly 1,000 times background levels in the air at Resolute Bay, Nunavut.
Meanwhile, government officials claimed there was nothing to worry about. “The quantities of radioactive materials reaching Canada as a result of the Japanese nuclear incident are very small and do not pose any health risk to Canadians,” Health Canada says on its website. “The very slight increases in radiation across the country have been smaller than the normal day-to-day fluctuations from background radiation.”
In fact, Health Canada’s own data shows this isn’t true. The iodine-131 level in the air in Sidney peaked at 3.6 millibecquerels per cubic metre on March 20. That’s more than 300 times higher than the background level, which is 0.01 or fewer millibecquerels per cubic metre.
“There have been massive radiation spikes in Canada because of Fukushima,” said Gordon Edwards, president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility.
“The authorities don’t want people to have an understanding of this. The government of Canada tends to pooh-pooh the dangers of nuclear power because it is a promoter of nuclear energy and uranium sales.”
Edwards has advised the federal auditor-general’s office and the Ontario government on nuclear-power issues and is a math professor at Montreal’s Vanier College.
The Green Party of Canada said despite public concern over fallout from the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Health Canada failed to report higher than normal radioactive iodine levels in rainwater.Source: Global Research

“We were worried that this important information would not reach the public and unfortunately, it looks as if we were right,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, MP for Saanich Gulf Islands in a written press release.
It has now been revealed that data were not released from a Calgary Health Canada monitoring station detecting levels of radioactive iodine in rainwater well above the Canadian guideline for drinking water.
This isotope was known to be released by the nuclear accident and also showed up in tests in Vancouver, Winnipeg and Ottawa. Lower levels of contamination resulted in a don’t-drink-rainwater advisory in Virginia.
“Serious questions are arising about how Health Canada tests for radiation, and why it has failed to properly alert the public,” said May.

“In effect, Health Canada has not allowed Canadians to take any preventative steps to reduce our exposure to this radiation.”
Canadian Medical Association Journal Blasts Japanese Government: "Culture of Coverup" Exposing Japanese Citizens to "Unconscionable" Radiation Risk
The official journal of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), "Canadian Medical Association Journal" is a peer-reviewed scientific journal. On their website, there is an article dated December 21, 2011 which severely criticizes the Japanese government's response (or lack thereof) to the nuclear disaster which has just been declared "over" by the current Noda administration.
Written by Lauren Vogel of CMAJ quoting medical experts, the article states:
- The Japanese government has been "lying through their teeth" ever since the March 11 accident;
- The Japanese government hasn't disclosed enough information for the citizens to make informed decision, with “extreme lack of transparent, timely and comprehensive communication”;
- The response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster by the Japanese government is far worse than the response to the Chernobyl accident by the Soviet Union government;
- The annual radiation exposure limit for the general public of 20 millisieverts is "unconscionable", and there has been no government "in recent decades that's been willing to accept such a high level of radiation-related risk for its population"
The article is literally trashing the Japanese government. Quite a contrast to certain international organizations who praise the Japanese government at every opportunity. But in fact, the second point above is in violation of one of the ICRP's recommendations which says the residents should be made aware and understand the radiation risk fully before giving consent to the government policy.
Further, the article quotes Dr. Kozo Tatara of the Japan Public Health Association, who revealed a difficult position his government was in at a meeting in Washington DC in November, by saying:
“It’s very difficult to persuade people that the level [of exposure set by the government] is okay”Still, one expert interviewed for the article seems to think it's still not too late to evacuate:
"the single most important public health measure to minimize the health harm over the longterm is much wider evacuation"Quite a contrast to the Japan Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that issued an official statement back on March 19, declaring "It is safe if you are 30 kilometers away from the plant, the information from the national government is accurate, there is no negative health effect on embryos, fetuses, babies and small children if the cumulative radiation is 100 millisieverts and below".
From Canadian Medial Association Journal (CMAJ) (12/21/2011; emphasis added):
Public health fallout from Japanese quake

December 21, 2011
A “culture of coverup” and inadequate cleanup efforts have combined to leave Japanese people exposed to “unconscionable” health risks nine months after last year’s meltdown of nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant, health experts say.
Although the Japanese government has declared the plant virtually stable, some experts are calling for evacuation of people from a wider area, which they say is contaminated with radioactive fallout.
They’re also calling for the Japanese government to reinstate internationally-approved radiation exposure limits for members of the public and are slagging government officials for “extreme lack of transparent, timely and comprehensive communication.”
But temperatures inside the Fukushima power station's three melted cores have achieved a “cold shutdown condition,” while the release of radioactive materials is “under control,” according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (www.iaea.org/newscenter/news/2011/coldshutdown.html). That means government may soon allow some of the more than 100 000 evacuees from the area around the plant to return to their homes. They were evacuated from the region after it was struck with an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and a tsunami last March 11.
Although the potential for further explosions with substantial releases of radioactivity into the atmosphere is certainly reduced, the plant is still badly damaged and leaking radiation, says Tilman Ruff, chair of the Medical Association for Prevention of Nuclear War, who visited the Fukushima prefecture in August. “There are major issues of contamination on the site. Aftershocks have been continuing and are expected to continue for many months, and some of those are quite large, potentially causing further damage to structures that are already unstable and weakened. And we know that there’s about 120 000 tons of highly contaminated water in the base of the plant, and there’s been significant and ongoing leakage into the ocean.”
The full extent of contamination across the country is even less clear, says Ira Hefland, a member of the board of directors for Physicians for Social Responsibility. “We still don't know exactly what radiation doses people were exposed to [in the immediate aftermath of the disaster] or what ongoing doses people are being exposed to. Most of the information we're getting at this point is a series of contradictory statements where the government assures the people that everything's okay and private citizens doing their own radiation monitoring come up with higher readings than the government says they should be finding.”
Japanese officials in Tokyo have documented elevated levels of cesium — a radioactive material with a half-life of 30 years that can cause leukemia and other cancers — more than 200 kilometres away from the plant, equal to the levels in the 20 kilometre exclusion zone, says Robert Gould, another member of the board of directors for Physicians for Social Responsibility.
International authorities have urged Japan to expand the exclusion zone around the plant to 80 kilometres but the government has instead opted to “define the problem out of existence” by raising the permissible level of radiation exposure for members of the public to 20 millisieverts per year, considerably higher than the international standard of one millisievert per year, Gould adds.
This “arbitrary increase” in the maximum permissible dose of radiation is an “unconscionable” failure of government, contends Ruff. “Subject a class of 30 children to 20 millisieverts of radiation for five years and you're talking an increased risk of cancer to the order of about 1 in 30, which is completely unacceptable. I'm not aware of any other government in recent decades that's been willing to accept such a high level of radiation-related risk for its population.”
Following the 1986 nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine, “clear targets were set so that anybody anticipated to receive more than five millisieverts in a year were evacuated, no question,” Ruff explains. In areas with levels between one and five millisieverts, measures were taken to mitigate the risk of ingesting radioactive materials, including bans on local food consumption, and residents were offered the option of relocating. Exposures below one millisievert were still considered worth monitoring.
In comparison, the Japanese government has implemented a campaign to encourage the public to buy produce from the Fukushima area, Ruff added. “That response [in Chernobyl] 25 years ago in that much less technically sophisticated, much less open or democratic context, was, from a public health point of view, much more responsible than what’s being done in modern Japan this year.”
Were Japan to impose similar strictures, officials would have to evacuate some 1800 square kilometres and impose restrictions on food produced in another 11 100 square kilometres, according to estimates of the contamination presented by Dr. Kozo Tatara for the Japan Public Health Association at the American Public Health Association's 139th annual meeting and exposition in November in Washington, District of Columbia.
“It’s very difficult to persuade people that the level [of exposure set by the government] is okay,” Tatara told delegates to the meeting. He declined requests for an interview.
The Japanese government is essentially contending that the higher dose is “not dangerous,” explains Hefland. “However, since the accident, it’s become clear the Japanese government was lying through its teeth, doing everything it possible could to minimize public concern, even when that meant denying the public information needed to make informed decisions, and probably still is.”
“It's now clear they knew within a day or so there had been a meltdown at the plant, yet they didn't disclose that for weeks, and only with great prodding from the outside,” Hefland adds. “And at the same moment he was assuring people there was no public health disaster, the Prime Minister now concedes that he thought Tokyo would have to be evacuated but was doing nothing to bring that about.”
Ruff similarly charges that the government has mismanaged the file and provided the public with misinformation. As an example, he cites early reports that stable iodine had been distributed to children and had worked effectively, when, “in fact, iodine wasn't given to anyone.”
Public distrust is at a level that communities have taken cleanup and monitoring efforts into their own hands as the government response to the crisis has been “woefully inadequate” and officials have been slow to respond to public reports of radioactive hotspots, Gould says. “That’s led to the cleanup of some affected areas, but there are also reports of people scattering contaminated soil willy-nilly in forests and areas surrounding those towns.”
“In some places, you can see mounds of contaminated soil that have just been aggregated under blue tarps,” he adds.
Even with government assistance, there are limits to the decontamination that can be achieved, explains Hefland. “What do you do with the stuff? Do you scrape entire topsoil? How far down you have to go? And if you wash down the buildings, what do you do with the waste water?”
As well, Ruff argues the government must examine the provision of compensation for voluntary evacuation from areas outside of the exclusion zone where there are high levels of radioactive contamination. Without such compensation, many families have no option but to stay, he says. “At this point, the single most important public health measure to minimize the health harm over the longterm is much wider evacuation.”
The Japanese government did not respond to inquiries.

How Is Fukushima’s Radioactive Fallout Affecting Marine Life?
By David Pacchioli :: Originally published online May 2, 2013
The Fukushima nuclear disaster delivered an unprecedented amount of radioactivity into the sea over a relatively brief time. How did that pulse of cesium and other radioisotopes make its way through the marine food chain? Scott Fowler, who helped pioneer marine radioecology for more than 30 years at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Marine Environment Laboratories, offered a primer on the subject at the Fukushima and the Ocean Conference in Tokyo in November 2012.
The food chain starts with marine phytoplankton—microscopic plants that account for as much photosynthesis as plants on land. These organisms take up radioactive contaminants from the seawater that surrounds them. As the phytoplankton are eaten by larger zooplankton, small fish, and larger animals up the food chain, some of the contaminants end up in fecal pellets or other detrital particles that settle to the seafloor. These particles accumulate in sediments, and some radioisotopes contained within them may be remobilized back into the overlying waters through microbial and chemical processes.
How much radioactivity gets into marine life depends on a host of factors: How long the organisms are exposed to radioactivity is certainly important, but so too are the sizes and species of the organisms, the radioisotopes involved, the temperature and salinity of the water, how much oxygen is in it, and many other factors such as the life stage of the organisms.
In all this, Fowler said, it’s important to remember the omnipresence of natural background radiation. Polonium-210 and potassium-40 are naturally occurring radioisotopes in the ocean, for example. Potassium-40 is the most abundant radioisotope in the ocean, but polonium-210 accumulates more readily in marine organisms.
“Polonium is responsible for the majority of the radiation dose that fish and other marine organisms receive,” he said.
In an experiment in the early 1980s, Fowler demonstrated vast differences in how much plutonium was absorbed from seawater by marine life across a spectrum of taxonomic groups. Phytoplankton accumulated roughly 10 times as much plutonium as microzooplankton, which took up 100 times more than clams. Octopi and crabs took up about half as much plutonium as clams, but about 100 times more than bottom-dwelling fish.
Another cross-species comparison showed that organisms took up different amounts of radioactivity depending on which particular radioisotopes were out there, he said.
Radioisotopes are also transferred to marine organisms from contaminated sediments—once again in ways that display a complex range of factors, Fowler noted. In one experiment measuring uptake of americium, worms exposed to contaminated sediments took up significantly more of the radioisotope than clams did. But both worms and clams took up much more of the radioisotopes from Pacific sediments, which contain relatively high amounts of silica minerals, than they did from Atlantic sediments, which contain more carbon minerals.
Food is another pathway into marine organisms and “may be in some cases the most important factor in uptake,” Fowler said. Consumed radioisotopes are assimilated internally through the gut, potentially a far more efficient route than if they are absorbed externally from the environment. Marine invertebrates, such as bottom-dwelling starfish and sea urchins, are particularly proficient at absorbing a wide range of ingested radioisotopes, he said, but fortunately, they lose that incorporated radioactivity over time, via excretion.
On an expedition in June 2011, biologists collected samples of phytoplankton, zooplankton (bottom), and fish, including the tiny hatchetfish (top), to learn if radioisotopes from Fukushima were accumulating in marine life. (Photos by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
From plankton to tuna
Fowler’s longtime colleague, Nicholas Fisher, zeroed in on the isotopes that have had the most impact from Fukushima. Fisher, a marine biogeochemist at Stony Brook University, has spent 35 years studying the fate of metals and radioisotopes in marine organisms, including radioisotopes associated with nuclear waste. He and members of his lab participated in the research cruise led by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution marine geochemist Ken Buesseler off the coast of Japan in June 2011.
Analyzing plankton and fish sampled on the cruise, they consistently found cesium-134 and cesium-137. Not surprisingly, they found no iodine-131, the isotope which along with cesium had been released in highest quantity from the damaged Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. Iodine-131, with its half-life of a mere eight days, was undetectable after a couple of months, Fisher explained.
Cesium, of course, is a different story. The ocean and its denizens continue to bear traces of cesium-137 that date from the atmospheric weapons testing during the Cold War era of the 1960s. Cesium-134, while much shorter-lived, will persist for a number of years.
The chemical properties of radioactive cesium are similar to those of non-radioactive cesium and naturally occurring potassium and sodium, which are abundant in seawater. So all these end up in the same tissues, particularly muscle, of fish and other marine organisms. But potassium and sodium are much less abundant in fresh water, so cesium uptake is much higher in freshwater organisms than in sea life.
Fish also excrete cesium fairly efficiently, losing a few percent per day. So if fish are no longer exposed to new contamination sources, the levels in their tissue should decrease fairly quickly.
Of particular concern for top-level consumers is the potential that these radioisotopes will be concentrated as they make their way up the food chain—what ecologists call biomagnification. Fortunately, cesium shows only modest biomagnification in marine food chains—much less than mercury, a toxic metal, or many other harmful organic compounds such the insecticide DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), Fisher said.
On the 2011 cruise, he and his team measured cesium in everything they sampled. “These were primarily zooplankton and some fish,” he reported. As expected, concentrations were higher in organisms sampled closer to shore. Radioactive silver (110mAg) was also detected in all zooplankton samples. In all cases, however, the amounts of cesium and silver isotopes were much lower than those of naturally occurring potassium-40 in the same samples.
“The radioactivity of the fish we caught and analyzed would not pose problems for human consumption,” he said. Which is not, he noted, the same thing as saying that all marine organisms caught in the region are perfectly safe to eat.
Persistently higher-than-normal levels
What’s puzzling to Fisher, Buesseler, and many other scientists is the persistence of these low but significant levels of radioactivity in the ocean. Jota Kanda, an oceanographer at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, has extensively studied coastal waters off Fukushima and calculated the amount of cesium still present in coastal waters shallower than 200 meters (660 feet) and in sediments on the seafloor. By his reckoning, what remains is less than three percent of the total discharge, with the rest long since flushed out to the open ocean.
Yet levels of the cesium radioisotopes are still being measured at several tens to hundreds of becquerels per cubic meter in this area, Kanda noted, considerably higher than the levels prior to the Fukushima disaster. More importantly, levels measured in coastal sediments and in some species of fish are higher than those in the surrounding water.
As Kanda sees it, there are three sources responsible for this stubborn presence. One is river runoff—the fallout washed by rainfall into nearby rivers that drain to the sea. He also suggested that a small amount of contaminated water from basement compartments in the reaction unit housing is continuing to leak from the plant itself. But the biggest culprit—the only plausible explanation for the steady levels of radioactive cesium being measured in fish tissue—is continuous input through a food source. And that, he said, points to sediments.
Kanda has estimated that a total of 95 terabecquerels of cesium (1012 becquerels) is present in coastal sediments. The question, he maintained, is how it got there. It could have drifted down to the seafloor in the fecal pellets of plankton that consumed it at the surface—and in fact, plankton in shallow waters sometimes showed elevated levels of cesium. It could also be arriving with organic bits and pieces carried along by river water. It could have adhered to clay particles that came in contact with contaminated water; such radioactive cesium is tightly bound to clay particles and may not be easily transferred to marine life.
Sediment is complex stuff, he explained. Viewed up close, a single grain of what looks like sand is likely a mélange of mineral, organic matter, and pore water—the liquid trapped in the tiny gaps between particles. How contaminants are taken into these agglomerations is not well understood. Echoing Scott Fowler, Kanda noted that the composition and properties of sediments can vary dramatically.
Solving the mystery of the ongoing radioactivity will require a thorough analysis of the seafloor off Fukushima’s coast, he stressed. “Local communities are concerned. They want to know ‘When can we resume fishing?’ We scientists will have to answer this question.”
The key may be how long cesium stays put and the pathways for its uptake into the food chain. Given the 30-year half-life of cesium-137, the sediments could be a possible source of contamination in the food chain for decades to come.

Pano

INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY AGREED IN WRITING TO CONCEAL FUKUSHIMA RADIATION INFO FROM PUBLIC; SIGNED CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENTS WITH JAPAN GOVERNMENT TO RESTRICT INFO ON DANGERS AND HEALTH EFFECTS
Tuesday, 07 January 2014 15:17
*** BREAKING NEWS *** January 7, 2014 -- (TRN http://www.TurnerRadioNetwork.com ) -- The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been caught agreeing in writing to conceal information from the world about the extent of danger, damage and health effects at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster in Japan. Turner Radio Network has obtained official copies of the agreements signed by the IAEA and the Fukui Prefectural Government as well as between the IAEA and Fukushima Medical University. We have the agreements, now YOU have them too!
http://www.turnerradionetwork.com/images/iaealogo.bmp
In an astonishing development in the ongoing disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, TRN has obtained official copies of agreements between the International Atomic Energy Agency and official entities in Japan, wherein the parties agree to conceal information from the public about the degree of damage, danger(s) and health effects on humans of the largest nuclear disaster in human history.
The first such agreement is signed on behalf of the Fukui Prefectural Government by Mr. Hiroyuki. Aratake, Director-General, Living and Environment Department. It is counter-signed on behalf of the IAEA by Mr. Denis Flory, Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. This document lays out the reason for its existence and the scope of cooperation between the IAEA and Japan. Specifically, the document states:
2. Scope of Cooperation
The Parties have identified the following areas and activities in which cooperation may be pursued:
· Research and study on radiation monitoring including application of environmental mapping technology by using unmanned aerial vehicles and the IAEA’s assistance in the use of radiation monitoring data to develop maps to be made available to the public;
· Research and study on off-site decontamination including the IAEA’s assistance in analyses of results of environmental monitoring and exploration of exposure pathways in order to reduce or avoid exposure; and
· Research and study on the management of radioactive waste including IAEA’s assistance in the study on management methods of low level radioactive waste from the above-referenced decontamination activities.
The above-referenced cooperation is designed to complement existing Japanese activities and to provide immediate assistance and support which will be of direct benefit to those living in Fukushima Prefecture.
While the item above sounds perfectly reasonable, Part 8 of the agreement seems to take a complete U-turn to conceal information from the public. Specifically, Part 8 of the agreement reads as follows:
8. Dissemination of Information
The Parties will support the widest possible dissemination of unclassified information provided or exchanged under these Practical Arrangements and, as appropriate and if circumstances so require, any subsequent separate arrangements including agreements referred to in Paragraph 5, subject to the need to protect proprietary
information. The Parties will ensure the confidentiality of information classified by the other Party as restricted or confidential. (Emphasis added)
According to the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper if either the prefectures or IAEA decide to classify information because “they contribute to worsening of the residents’ anxiety,” there is a possibility that such information as the accident information, as well as radiation measurement data and thyroid cancer information may not be publicized.
In short, if the IAEA doesn't want Japan telling something to the public, the IAEA can simply declare that information "restricted" and vice-versa!
Both the Fukui Prefectural Government and the IAEA are paid for - in one form or another - by TAX dollars; these entities exist to serve the public. How do they justify agreeing in writing to conceal information from the very public who makes their existence possible? Download the PDF of the Prefectural Goverment / IAEA agreement HERE
MEDICAL SCHOOL AGREES TO SECRECY TOO
In a separate and perhaps even more outrageous step, Mr. Daud Mohamad, Deputy Director General,Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications of the IAEA signed another agreement, this one with Mr. Shinichi Kikuchi, President of the Fukushima Medical University located at 1 Hikariga-oka, Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture 960-1295, Japan, wherein the two agree to cooperate as follows:
2. Scope of Cooperation
The Parties have identified the following areas and activities in which cooperation may be pursued:
· Health management survey: IAEA will assist the University in implementing the Fukushima Health Management Survey project;
· Capacity building and research: the Parties will collaborate in capacity building and research on human health programmes, including radiation emergency medicine;
· Enhancement of public awareness: the IAEA will endeavour to organize conferences, seminars and workshops, in cooperation with the University, with the aim of enhancing public awareness of radiological effects on human health and addressing the issue of “radiation fear” and post-traumatic stress disorders in the Fukushima population; and
· Exchange of expert support and information: the Parties may exchange expert support, information data and materials in carrying out the aforementioned collaborative activities.
As well-intentioned and reasonable as all that sounds, Part 8 of the agreement takes a dramatic turn to secrecy. Specifically, it states:
8. Dissemination of Information
The Parties will support the widest possible dissemination of unclassified information provided or exchanged under these Practical Arrangements and, as appropriate and if circumstances so require, any subsequent separate arrangement including agreements referred to in Paragraph 5, subject to the need to protect proprietary
information. The Parties will ensure the confidentiality of information classified by the other Party as restricted or confidential. (Emphasis added)
The Fukushima Medical University is a public school, created by the Prefectural Government. It is therefore funded by TAX dollars and accountable to the public. How can the University, which teaches young people to be Doctors and is allegedly concerned about public health, agree to conceal from the public (which pays for the school's existence) the health effects of radiation? Download the PDF of the Fukushima Medical University / IAEA agreement HERE
Given the evidence above, how can any rational person believe the public is being kept properly informed about the degree of damage and dangers emanating from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster? When governments and inter-governmental agencies from the United Nations, like the IAEA, conspire in writing to conceal information from the public, how can anyone trust these public servants?
The public has a right to know the threat to safety that exists from the Fukushima disaster. Since the effects of that disaster are affecting the Pacific ocean, and all the nations which border it, the public from those nations also have a right to know. It is long past time the public start demanding answers from elected public servants and getting the truth.

Yep it is all about cover up and all about greed and to heck with the safety of the American people.....these are sad and dangerous times we live in IMO.
Health Officials: ‘No Concern’ Over 500% Increase In Radiation Levels On California Beach
Mikael Thalen| Story Leak
Health officials in California are attempting to brush off public concern after a viral Youtube video showed a large increase in radiation levels on a Coastside beach last week.
The video, which has garnered nearly half a million views, shows radiation levels over five times above the normal background level, prompting fears over the ongoing Fukushima disaster.
Following public outcry, a state investigation by health officials found similar levels while collecting ground samples several days later. According to County Environmental Health Director Dean Peterson, the public should not be concerned.
“It’s not something that we feel is an immediate public health concern,” Peterson told the Review. “We’re not even close to the point of saying that any of this is from Fukushima.”
According to “Dave,” the video’s author, radiation detected two inches off the beach surface several days prior produced levels even higher, nearly 13 times above normal.
Unconvinced of any link to Fukushima, Peterson pointed to items such as “red-painted disposable eating utensils” as a more likely cause of the heightened radiation levels.
“I honestly think the end result of this is that it’s just higher levels of background radiation,” Peterson said.
A group from GeigerCounter.com claims to have analyzed and found elevated levels of Radium 226 and Thorium 232 in the sand, two naturally occurring radioactive substances reportedly not associated with Fukushima.
According to Dave, after two years of measuring levels on the beach, the increase appeared almost overnight. Given estimates by physics experts that point to a massive radiation plume reaching the west coast by early 2014, some see the timing as more than coincidence.
Countless other issues plaguing the West Coast in recent months, such as the ongoing “melting sea star” epidemic, have raised increasing questions over the government’s handling of the disaster, or lack thereof.
Recent comments made by former MSNBC host Chenk Uygur have only fueled the public’s speculation over Fukushima’s severity. Attempting to speak out early on, Uygur was advised by the network not to warn viewers “because the official government position is that it’s safe.”
Unfortunately, initial concerns regarding Japan were validated after 71 U.S. sailors came forward last month, stricken with Leukemia, tumors and thyroid cancer after helping with initial Fukushima relief operations.
Just last week, the Department of Health and Human Services quietly ordered 14 million doses of potassium iodide, used to protect the thyroid gland during radiological disasters. Attempting to investigate the matter, DHHS officials hung up on Storyleak’s Anthony Gucciardi after questions regarding the incident produced conflicting answers.
As new mysterious plumes of steam continue to rise from reactor 3, Fukushima’s future remains increasingly uncertain.

Whether or not these nuclear pollutants will be transported to the Pacific-neighboring countries through oceanic circulations becomes a world-wide concern. [...]http://enenews.com/wp-content/upload....-20-08.20.jpg
[...] The time scale of the nuclear pollutants reaching the west coast of America is 3.2 years if it is estimated using the surface drifting buoys and 3.9 years if it is estimated using the nuclear pollutant particulate tracers. Figure 4 gives the examples of the distribution of the impact strength of Cesium-137 at year 1.5 (panel (a)), year 3.5 (panel (b)), and year 4 (panel (c)). [...] Since the major transport mechanism of nuclear pollutants for the west coast of America is the Kuroshio-extension currents, after four years, the impact strength of Cesium-137 in the west coast area of America is as high as 4%.

Nuclear expert admits Fukushima reactors melted into the ground, contaminating hundreds of tons of groundwater daily
http://drleonardcoldwell.com/wp-cont...er-300x175.jpg
Fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster from two and a half years ago continues to silently impact health and safety around the world. After explosions in four of the six reactors, three melted down into the ground, and there is no way to simply plug the dam.
The effects of this unprecedented disaster continue to play out in slow motion. But of course, what isn’t seen remains little talked about in the media or among the public.
Recent accounts reveal that Japanese officials continue to refuse to publicly acknowledge the extent of the problem and are actively covering up the truth to hold together the appearance that everything is normal, and that all is well.
According to Takashi Hirose, author of Fukushima Meltdown: The World’s First Earthquake-Tsunami-Nuclear Disaster, there are reports of widespread contamination levels in food, including fish and vegetables, that is being distributed to Tokyo and other areas of Japan. Hirose asserts that there are credible claims that food originating in the Fukushima prefecture is shipped to other locales, then reshipped out with labels stating that it originated from other prefectures – masking its origins and hiding the threat of bioaccumulated radiation in the food web.
Meanwhile, a nuclear expert spotlighted the volume of radioactive materials – on the order of 300 tons of water per day – that continues to flow out from the melted down reactor cores at the power plant into the Pacific Ocean day in and day out, with no hope of slowing down, continually increasing global exposure since 2011.
The president and co-founder of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, Gordon Edwards, discussed the extent of the continued contamination during a radio interview with The Green Majority on 89.5 FM in Toronto on December 6, 2013. Edwards holds a Ph.D. in mathematics and has served as a nuclear consultant and testified as a nuclear expert in Canadian courts.
Shockingly, Edwards stated, “There are about 300 tons of contaminated water every day going into the Pacific Ocean underground. That’s because the cores of the reactors have melted into the ground, and now the groundwater is flowing underneath the reactors and it’s washing that radioactive material out into the Pacific Ocean at the rate of 300 tons per day.”
The water pumped in to cool the melted reactor cores then becomes contaminated, pumped out again and washed out into the ocean in volume.
“They have been pumping 400 tons of water from the surface down into the reactor cores and then pumping the contaminated water back up again,” Edwards added.
Back in October, officials from TEPCO, the primarily government-owned Tokyo Electric Power Company, were mocked as “silly” for claiming that the irradiated groundwater flowing into the Pacific Ocean remained within a 0.12 square mile radius (0.3 square kilometers), asserting that the contamination was easily contained within a bay immediately in front of the reactor site. Nevertheless, that statement was supported by the Japanese government, according to Bloomberg News.
“These statements like a 0.3 square-kilometer zone are silly. It’s not true to the science,” said Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who began his career studying how radioactive nucleotides from Chernobyl dispersed through the Black Sea.
“The credibility problem is as great as the engineering solution. There’s a lack of trust that they keep reinforcing by saying things like ‘beyond this 0.3 kilometers zone there’s no release,’” Buesseler added, drawing from data that his own team took off the coast of Fukushima.
While measurements for radioactivity are being taken near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors for cesium levels, very little testing is being done for tritium or strontium-90, which Buesseler indicated could be troublesome, as strontium mimics calcium and stores for long periods in bones, creating exposure routes in food sources including fish.
In an attempt to control what many have dubbed the greatest nuclear disaster in history, TEPCO has built over a thousand tanks, and growing, to house the contaminated water. According to Gordon Edwards, these holding tanks, already leaking, are larger disasters waiting to happen – should a new storm or other weather event happen, for instance.
“All that contaminated water is just sitting there,” Edwards said. “They found a pool of water beside the tank that was leaking, that pool of water – they measured the radiation levels – if a person stood beside that pool of water for 1 hour, they would die of radiation poisoning. So that’s how contaminated this water is.”
A fresh report from RT highlighted many of the makeshift solutions being used in vain to try to contain the vast amounts of contaminated water. It quoted fallout researcher Christina Consolo, of RadChick Radiation Research & Mitigation, who said, “The site has been propped up with duct tape and a kick-stand for over two years. Many of their ‘fixes’ are only temporary.”
At least 71 U.S. sailors who responded to Fukushima aboard the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan have reportedly developed leukemia, thyroid cancer and brain tumors, and are in the process of filing a lawsuit against TEPCO for allegedly downplaying the dangers of nuclear radiation near the Daiichi plant.

More Fukushima Fallout: Japan to conduct nuke meltdown, on purpose! Overall radiation levels rising at Fukushima Daiichi, throwaway workers now in danger! 1400% radiation increase in California?
Posted on January 10, 2014
10 January 2014 (04:22 UTC-07 Tango)/08 Rabi ‘al-Awwal 1435/20 Dey 1392/10 Gui-Chou (12th month) 4711
Japan Times reporting that the Japan Atomic Energy Agency will conduct a full meltdown of nuclear fuel in March! The crazy bastards at the JAEA want to observe the meltdown “….to figure out how meltdowns occurred at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in 2011″!
The meltdown will take place at the Nuclear Safety Research Reactor in Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture. It will involve one fuel rod. The test is being done because, still, nobody knows what’s really going on at Fukushima Daiichi, three years after at least three GE designed reactors melted down!
Remember, between reactors 1,2 & 3 there are at least 1500 fuel rods! And don’t forget they’re still having problems with reactor Unit 4!
Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) reporting that overall radiation levels at the boundaries of the Fukushima Daiichi radiation factory have risen to 8 milisieverts in December 2013! In March 2013 it was at 1 milisievert. Currently, Japanese nuke throwaway workers can be legally exposed to 1 milisievert per year, the latest reading is eight times that limit!
NRA officials blame the build up of beta ray contamination in the leaking water storage tanks. They claim that the inflow of beta radiation contaminated water into the tanks is actually crowding out the other isotopes, pushing them right through the thick metal walls of the tanks! Officials at the NRA are now holding meetings to figure out what to do!
The inflow of beta radiation into the storage tanks can be partly blamed on the failed Advanced Liquid Processing System. Tokyo Electric Power Company, apparently, finally gave up on their failed ALPS filtration system. ALPS was supposed to be used to filter the hotter isotopes from water before being stored into the tanks. I’ve been following the implementation of ALPS, and it never worked right. TEPCo had so many problems with it that it seemed they couldn’t go three weeks without shutting down for repairs.
On 08 January 2014, TEPCo shut down all three ALPS filters. This time they blame it on the 14 containers used to store the filtered material, saying they are packed full. They also said it will be some time before they can get empty containers and re-start the filtration.
The Half Moon Bay Review interviewed an electrical engineer who’s worked with geiger counters for 40 years. His own radiation checks of Surfer’s Beach, in California, showed a 1400% increase in radiation: “It’s not normal! I’ve never seen 400 CPM [counts per minute] when I just wave my geiger around! There has to be something radioactive for it to do that.”-Steve Weiss, radiological analyst The Half Moon Bay Review also reported increasing amounts of cesium-137, radium and thorium on California beaches.
After California officials denounced the independent radiation monitoring by residents (one video showed a 500% increase in radiation on California beaches), the alternative news source InfoWars deployed a squad of reporters to the U.S. west coast to take radiation samples for themselves. For their first rad check, the InfoWars radiation squad reports they found high levels of radiation outside the famous Redwood Forest; more than 80 CPMs at some points leading up to the entrance of the famous Drive Thru Tree.
Despite the geiger counter evidence of increased radiation University of Southern California professor, Daniel Stram said “There’s no danger from Fukushima with the fish that we eat.”

. . . The announcement coincides with other news this week that another team of Japanese scientists reported finding 17 strains of microalgae, algae and plants could absorb and help remove some of the radioactive pollution from the waters around Fukushima Daiichi.
Cleanup in the area is expected to cost about $35 billion, Japan's Ministry of Energy said. Slated to be complete by March, the deadline has since been pushed back to 2017, the Japan Times reported.

Is the sea floor littered with dead animals due to radiation? No.

Recently we at Deep-Sea News have tried to combat misinformation about the presence of high levels of Fukushima radiation and its impact on marine organisms on the west coast of the United States.
After doing thorough research, reading the scientific literature, and consulting with experts and colleagues, we have found no evidence of either. In the comments of those posts and on Twitter, readers have asked us about the “evidence” of dead marine life covering 98% of ocean floor in the Pacific as directly attributed to Fukushima radiation. After some searching I found the main “news” article that is referenced.
The Pacific Ocean appears to be dying, according to a new study recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California recently discovered that the number of dead sea creatures blanketing the floor of the Pacific is higher than it has ever been in the 24 years that monitoring has taken place, a phenomenon that the data suggests is a direct consequence of nuclear fallout from Fukushima.
Before I discuss this “evidence” further, I want to provide a little background. I am a deep-sea biologist and over the last several years my research has focused on the biodiversity of deep-sea communities off the California coast.
Like many others, I am also working toward understanding how deep-sea life will respond to increased anthropogenic impacts particularly climate change. This resulted in a high profile publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. I mention this background because 1. It explains why I view myself as an expert to comment on this and 2. it explains why I was confounded for a moment when I thought I had missed a paper in a journal I have published in, on a geographic region I study, and on a topic close to my own research. And to boot from researchers at institution (MBARI) I was formerly employed with.
The reason I am unfamiliar with a study providing evidence of “Dead sea creatures cover 98 percent of ocean floor off California coast; up from 1 percent before Fukushima” is because no such study exists. Here are the details of the actual study.
http://deepseanews.com/wp-content/up...-m-map-400.jpg
Station M is a long-term study site on the abyssal plain, about 220 kilometers (140 miles) off the Central California coast and 4,000 meters (13,100) feet below the ocean surface. Base image: Google Earth. From MBARI
Ken Smith’s group at MBARI has monitored a deep-sea abyssal site called Station M off the California coast continuously since 1989 (24 years). Their work has lead to many major findings. A majority of deep-sea animals are completely reliant on the sinking of food from the surface, i.e. marine snow. One of the most important findings from Smith and colleagues’ work is that rhythm of deep-sea life is intrinsically linked to the production of phytoplankton at the oceans surface. Thus El Nino/La Nina cycles and other such meteorological/oceanic events leave a deep-sea signature. Ken’s research has been paradigm shifting for deep-sea research. We have moved from a belief of a stable and climate-buffered view of the deep sea to one of a dynamic system intimately related to seasonal, annual, and decadal changes in surface production and ocean currents.
This group’s newest paper
Smith, K. L., H. A. Ruhl, M. Kahru, C. L. Huffard, and A. D. Sherman. (2013). Deep ocean communities impacted by changing climate over 24 y in the abyssal northeast Pacific Ocean. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1315447110.
reports findings that large and episodic pulses of marine snow occur. These large blizzards are met by hungry deep-sea animals that quickly gobble the meal. The amount of food these blizzards deliver are huge equaling years, if not decades, of normal marine snow. But the amounts and frequency of both normal marine snow and the blizzards are changing.

Sea cucumbers at Station M feed on dead algae (brown material on gray deep-sea mud) that sank from the sunlit surface waters after a massive algal bloom. Image © 2012 MBARI
From 2003 to 2012 the amount of phytoplankton production, fodder for marine snow, was higher than years prior. After 2006, the frequency of spikes in marine snow, i.e. blizzards, also increased. In the summer of 2011, the first of three dramatic blizzards occurred. During this event a large number of diatoms bloomed at the surface and sank rapidly to the seafloor.
The second event in the spring/early summer of 2012, was triggered by a major bloom of gelatinous salps. As mentioned in the press release of the paper,
“These salps became so abundant that they blocked the seawater intake of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, located on the California coast east of Station M.” When these salps died, as they do after a bloom, they carpeted the seafloor. In September 2012 another plankton bloom occurred and this combined with fecal pellets from salps (who hungrily munched on the algae) again carpeted the floor with marine snow. In addition the greatest amounts of marine snow and consumption by deep-sea life (as measured by respiration rates) occurred in the last two years of the time series.
http://deepseanews.com/wp-content/up...AM-600x430.jpg
Modified from Smith et al. 2013. Long time-series measurements from July 1989 through November 2012 at Station M in the northeast Pacific Ocean on a monthly basis.
Blue bars highlight the timing of peaks in NPP (a proxy for phytoplankton production) from 2010 to 2012. (B) Net primary production (NPP) within 100-km-radius circle around Station M. (C) Satellite estimated EF (export flux a measurement of the amount of material sinking to the deep sea) in a 100-km-radius circle around Station M, calculated for a nominal depth of 100 m.
What caused these recent changes in marine snow?
From the paper,The abyssal area surrounding Station M is influenced by the California Current, which is experiencing increased wind stress, resulting in increased upwelling of nutrient-rich subsurface waters, contributing to increased primary production. With increasing primary production there has been a corresponding increase in POC flux and detrital aggregate accumulation on the sea floor over the past several years.
And from the press release,The researchers note that deep-sea feasts may be increasing in frequency off the Central California coast, as well as at some other deep-sea study sites around the world. Over the last decade, the waters off Central California have seen stronger winds, which bring more nutrients, such as nitrate, to the ocean surface. These nutrients act like fertilizer, triggering blooms of algae, which, in turn, sometimes feed blooms of salps. The fallout from all of this increased productivity eventually ends up on the seafloor.
Nowhere does the paper or the press release mention radiation or Fukushima. Nilch, negatory, nadda, never.
But this is not good enough for staff writer Ethan Hunt and others outlets that continue to recycle this story.Though the researchers involved with the work have been reluctant to pin Fukushima as a potential cause — National Geographic, which covered the study recently, did not even mention Fukushima — the timing of the discovery suggests that Fukushima is, perhaps, the cause.
MBARI today also issued a press release addressing the “several misleading stories [that] have been in circulation on the internet.” The press release points out the obvious.
- MBARI research actually showed evidence that there were MORE algae and salps living in California surface waters during 2011 and 2012 than during the previous 20 years.
- Salps are small gelatinous animals that eat single-celled algae. They are known to experience large blooms in their populations. Large populations of salps have been periodically documented in California waters since at least the 1950s.
- Blooms of gelatinous animals (including salps) and single-celled algae are a common occurrence off the California Coast. They come and go, running their course when they use up their food and nutrients.
- Animals and algae that live in the surface waters eventually die. If they are not eaten in surface waters then they sink to the deep sea. This is the main food source for deep-sea animal and microbe communities.
- Soon after the salp bloom and die-off at the surface in 2012, the deep seafloor at the researchers’ study site was littered with dead salps. This was observed at one location, and salps were the only dead animals observed in large numbers.
- There is no indication that any of the events in this study were associated with the Fukushima nuclear accident.
I will also note the Fukushima disaster occurred in March 2011, five years after the researches begin to see changes in surface production. To reiterate the statements points, there is evidence of more life recently in California waters. The supposed “die off” is a common feature of any bloom of short-lived invertebrates. The “die off” was experienced at one location and with one species. The entire Pacific seafloor is not littered with dying organisms. I would also point out that these massive food falls of marine invertebrates are a common occurrence. For example, in 2002 a massive deposition of jellyfish was seen in the deep Arabian Sea.
As I write this post on this cold Saturday morning, my attitude matches. I have wanted to write about this paper for a while here at DSN.
And I’m sorry I did not. I shoudn’t be defending great science against propaganda and poor journalism. I should be writing about how this paper answers a major question about the deep sea. Previous studies have noted that the energy requirements of deep-sea animals could not be met by normal and minimal marine snow. Research over the last decade or so set out to determine how this deficit is made up. Smith and colleagues’ work solves this riddle.
Deep-sea animals simply wait for a sporadic feast. Smith’s work suggests this is likely linked to climatic events.
If anything the paper is a cautionary tale of climate change not radiation.

The reason the MSM isn't covering this issue is that most of this is false information put out by anti-nuclear groups. IMO

Thanks for posting all the cover up material JD2 that is out there, any one who thinks that 300-400 tons of radiation daily being poured into the ocean and atmosphere is fine is clueless or being paid off OR BOTH. If you read the thread NUCLEAR scientist are letting us all know we are screwed for decades. As I recall.... for awhile you did not believe the NSA was recording all our communications..... and finding out that you are an advocate for MSM..... that at this time even most of the clueless know are nothing more than propaganda machines, is no surprise....thanks again.
Japan Professors: Worst case scenario at Fukushima, nuclear rods melted and went through reactor floors; Contamination is impacting rest of world; Likely that entire Pacific will be affected — Farmer: Gov’t doesn’t have any idea about status of fuel (VIDEO)
Kenichi Hasegawa, Farmer from Iitate Village in Fukushima Prefecture, Parliamentary Meeting in Australia, Published March 12, 2013 (at 46:00 in): So the government is promoting image threat it wasn’t a big deal. It’s over, everything’s under control. That’s what government tries to disseminate to the population. However, even now 2 years after, the nuclear fuel that melted down, they don’t have any idea even the constant status. They don’t know what to do with it. That’s the current situation.

The 2011 Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster – Kyoto University’s Okada Norio, Yoshio Kajitani, Hirokazu Tatano & Beijing University’s Tao Ye, Peijun Shi: [T]he nuclear accident gradually became a level 7 nuclear event, which is a major accident and the highest level on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES), equivalent to the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986. The radiation in the vicinity of the reactor rose steeply, becoming a deadly threat to the local residents […] three units were exposed to level 7 accidents and one unit was exposed to a level 3 incident. The critical issue in the crisis became the cooling systems failures. […] The high temperature turned most of the internal coolant water into steam, which in turn exposed the fuel rods to air. […] Fuel would escape away from control rods, intensify decay, melt through the reactor floor, and consequently induce a massive release of radioactive isotopes, a worst case scenario. […] Radioactive isotopes released from Fukushima were later detected in North America and other regions in the world. […] The long-term impact of the nuclear crisis to Japan, the Asia-Pacific region, and the entire world is still not fully revealed. […] The radioactive contamination caused by the nuclear accident following the earthquake and tsunami is affecting the rest of the world through atmospheric circulation. The polluted water released by the Tokyo Electric Power Company is likely to affect the entire Pacific Ocean in the coming decades.
