Breaking News! Something very strange is going on in California and New Mexico right now. Susan Duclos asks, Is it just a coincidence that just days after a report is released by ENENews that the leader of the Fukushima study stated that “Intense” radiation exposure was headed towards the US west coast with a plume traveling very fast and that “high concentrations” would impact the west coast with a prolonged period of radioactive upwelling expected, the highest of readings in San Diego, California and Albuquerque, New Mexico, suddenly vanish, go totally offline, and when they reappear those numbers have dropped by hundreds of Counts Per Minute?

Surprise Surprise......the government will do all they can to hide the truth of the matter, that has been proven over and over....they hope we are all stupid or turn into useful idiots.....no happening here!

    • Jill Krop, host: For months now, we’ve been seeing conflicting reports of radiation in our water and arriving on our shores. So, how do you determine fact from fear-mongering?…
    • Karen Wristen, Living Oceans: Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) has [monitored] off the west coast of Vancouver… since June 2012 and they found in each subsequent year, increasing levels of radiation… it’s increasing but the highest levels they found are some 20,000X less than ‘safe levels’ for drinking water… certainly not a cause for concern ["This is a major concern" -Vancouver scientists]… There are a lot of people deeply concerned about this, and there is controversy over what is a ‘safe limit’there are all kinds of questions about the science behind that… There have also been reports of certain fish testing fairly high for radiation, certainly higher than background…
    • Host: Dr. Frank, do you think that at some point enough radiation could make its way from Fukushima to BC to be a danger to people living here?
    • Dr. Erica Frank, MD, Univ. of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine: The question is, at what point in this unfolding tragedy are we? We know that the plants are continuing to gush radiation. We know that the isotopes have half-lives of 30 years, so they’re around for the next century, even if they were stop right now. So yes, we are not at the end of this, we are probably only at the beginning of this story.
    • Host: That means radiation potentially will become much greater in BC in water, in soil?
    • Dr. Frank: Hopefully not. But the issue is that the gov’t needs to monitor and to report it, and that’s part of the problem. They haven’t been doing the reporting, even though they promised they wouldThe Canadian food inspection agency and the Public Health Agency of Canada saidyes, they will publish — but they haven’t
    • Host: Do you think they are purposefully holding back any information?…
    • Wrest: I don’t think it’s purposeful… When you know where to look, they [DFO] will release it, it’s not like it’s under wraps… [Their funding had] such deep cuts in 2011.

“When you know where to look, [DFO] will release it”? So one has to ‘know where to look’ to have them ‘release it’? If anyone has found results published by DFO, please share the link.
The public was first informed of DFO’s detection of Fukushima-related cesium by an ENENews report quoting scientist Ken Buesseler’s Oct. 2013 KPFA interview where he revealed, “I’ve seen some Canadian data that the front edge of that plume is starting to show up.” ENENews was also the first to publish data related to the DFO testing in a Dec. 2013 report, “Fukushima ocean plume hit Canada 6 months ago” — which cited information from a little known presentation by a DFO scientist. Nearly one year later, this presentation appears to still be the only publicly available information regarding DFO’s Fukushima-related test results.

Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds Energy Education on Radio Ecoshock, released Oct 29, 2014:

    • Alex Smith, host of RadioEcoshock (at 10:30 in): We’ve heard almost nothing about the impacts [of the Fukushima catastrophe] on people in that region. There are accounts coming out of there of strange tumors, kids dying, pets dying — what have you heard? Can we ever expect an honest accounting from Japanese authorities?
    • Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer (emphasis added): That’s a pretty good summary, frankly. We continue to get information from people who live there about cancer rates — and illnesses in general, not just cancer. We think of radiation as a cancer causing thing, but it also causes many other ailments. Much higher incidences of a whole range of illnesses than they had in 2010, the year before the accident… We’re also working with doctors in Japan, and some brave doctors are saying that they’ve been threatened — that their hospital rights have been threatened — if you tell your patient this illness is radiation related you’ll lose your right to practice and things like that. So there’s enormous pressure on the medical community to tell the patients that what they’re experiencing is not at all related to radiation. The key is statistics, and the question is when will the statistics be released for mortality, morbidity, and general illnesses… We’re not seeing the data. The medical community now has to file every report that it writes with the IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency, before it’s issued. So if you’re a hospital, and you’ve got mortality data, you’re not allowed to issue that to the public until those reports have been cleared by the IAEA. Well, Article II of the IAEA charter is to promote nuclear power. So even if the hospital was conscientious — there’s a lot of political pressure not to be — but even if it was conscientious, there’s another step in the process, and they’ve got to clear an IAEA hurdle before those numbers are released. It’s truly frightening, the pressure the medical community is undergoing in Japan. Very few of them are willing to tell the truth.

Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer, Oct. 20, 2014 (at 15:00 in): There’s experts out there like me – independent experts – who are saying that as many as a million cancers may result.

Radiation detection nearly set at WV landfills

Radiation detection nearly set at WV landfills

    Posted: Oct 30, 2014 9:26 AM PDT Updated: Oct 30, 2014 9:31 AM PDT

CHARLESTON, WV (AP) -A state Department of Environmental Protection official says the installation of detectors is nearly complete at six West Virginia landfills that will accept low-level radioactive drilling waste from natural gas operations.

Legislation passed earlier this year required radiation monitoring of drill cuttings sent to landfills and overturned tonnage limits for those particular landfills.

The DEP then crafted emergency rules for radiation detector placement. Work on the rule started after a landfill without detectors was stopped from accepting radioactive materials determined to be slightly above background levels.

DEP Division of Water and Waste Management director Scott Mandirola says detectors will be in place at two landfills in Harrison County and one apiece in Brooke, Ohio, Wetzel and Wood counties.

Loads of cuttings above a certain radiation level must be rejected.

Stars & Stripes, Oct. 30, 2014: A US federal judge has ruled that a class-action lawsuit filed by about 200 Navy sailors and Marines can proceed against [TEPCO, GE, EBASCO, Toshiba & Hitachi]…. “It is not over, but we have won the major battle,” lawyer Charles Bonner wrote… “THANK GOD!!!!!” responded Lindsay Cooper, the first USS Ronald Reagan sailor to come forward… [The] ruling was a bit of a surprise… [Sailors] alleged that TEPCO’s misinformation coaxed US forces closer… More ailing servicemembers came forward citing exposure-related ailments such as unexplained cancers, excessive bleeding and thyroid issues… [Attorneys] said additional plaintiffs are continuing to come forward with “serious ailments from radiation”
Bloomberg, Oct. 30, 2014: Judge Janis L. Sammartino… denied the request by [Tepco] to dismiss… Tepco had argued the U.S. military had contributed to the plaintiffs’ harm…
Charles Bonner & Cabral Bonner & Paul Garner, Esq. Press Release (via Nuclear Hotseat), Oct. 29, 2014: U.S. Navy Sailors have won a crucial battle… A Federal judge has ruled that the sailors’ class action law suit may go forward… 200 young sailors [say] TEPCO deliberately lied to the public and the U.S. Navy about the radiation levels… Up to 70,000 U.S. citizens were potentially affected by the radiation and will be able to join the class action suit… The lawsuit includes claims for illnesses such as Leukemia, ulcers, gall bladder removals, brain cancer, brain tumors, testicular cancer, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, thyroid illnesses, stomach ailments and a host of other complaints unusual in such young adults… One Sailor, age 22… states, “Upon my return from Operation Tomodachi, I began losing my eyesight.I lost all vision in my left eye and most vision in my right eye. I am unable to read street signs and am no longer able to drive… I know of no family members who have had leukemia.”… The sailors would like the general public to contact their members of Congress, locally elected officials, and President Obama and implore them to tell the Government of Japan to (1) apply the principles of “Operation Tomodachi” to the Plaintiff-victims and help these U.S. Sailors; and (2) tell TEPCO to stop shirking responsibility…
    Defense Threat Reduction Agency, 2014:

    • Ken Myers, DTRA Director: The nuclear crisis in Japan… was a terrible tragedy… It wasn’t just the nuclear threat on land… All of that nuclear material was spilling into the ocean… spreading around the Pacific… US Navy was potentially at threat, because the last thing you want to do is take a carrier strike force through a large nuclear contaminated area. There were some very interesting moments where we were in direct contact with the US Navy, recommending paths to stay out of nuclear contaminated area. There are a lot of people around here who boast that they were driving the carriers
    • Ronnie Faircloth, DTRA Director of Operations: The radiation exposure coming off of that civil nuclear reactor will kill you just as well as a nuclear weapon.

Mysterious Phenomena’ off U.S. West Coast: Fish disappeared, whales nearly absent, no krill, high rates of egg failure among birds — California Fishermen: “There’s almost nothing there, just a lot of warm clear water”

San Jose Mercury News, Nov. 2, 2014: Rare changes in wind patterns this fall have caused the Pacific Ocean off California and the West Coast to warm to historic levels, drawing in a bizarre menagerie of warm-water species. The mysterious phenomena are surprising fishermen… El Niño isn’t driving this year’s warm-water spike… Nor is climate change… All year [NOAA] scientists… have been forecasting an El Niño… But now the water is only slightly warmer than normal at the equator, leading scientists to declare a mild El Niño is on the way… The ocean changes also have affected birds. As ocean upwelling stalled in the summer, less krill and other food rose from the depths. As a result, several species of birds, including common murres, had high rates of egg failure on the Farallon Islands, 27 miles west of San Francisco.
Jaime Jahncke, California Current Group director of Point Blue in Petaluma, Nov. 2, 2014: “The krill that is usually present disappeared, and the fish that some of these birds rely on disappeared… Up until July we had an abundance of whales around the Farallons, mostly humpback whales, and some blue whales. And when we went back in September, there was no krill and the whales were nearly absent.”
Zeke Grader, executive director of the Pacific Federation of Fishermen’s Associations in San Francisco, Nov. 2, 2014: “Our guys in Santa Barbara are saying there’s almost nothing down there. Just a lot of warm, clear water, a little bit of salmon and not much else.”

US sailors exposed to Fukushima radiation levels beyond Japan’s estimates

    by The Stream Team @ajamstream

American Sailors scrub the USS Ronald Reagan's flight deck as a radiation countermeasure after Operation Tomodachi, a relief effort for victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in 2011.Nicholas A. Groesch/U.S. Navy/Getty Images.

Crew members on the USS Ronald Reagan during Operation Tomodachi, a 2011 Fukushima relief mission, encountered radiation levels that far exceeded the Japanese government's estimates, according to a report in The Asia-Pacific Journal.

The revelations contained in the report could have a bearing on the lawsuit against Tokyo Electric Power Company by more than 70 U.S. service members who say they suffer from long-term health effects from their participation in the U.S. Navy's response to the nuclear disaster.

Kyle Cleveland, a Temple University professor based in Japan, obtained documents showing military officials aboard the carrier detected radiation levels that were 30 times greater than normal and significantly higher than what the Japanese government told them to expect.

Navy officials have maintained that the radiation levels service members were exposed to during Operation Tomodachi were not enough to cause health effects.

Below are excerpts from a telephone conversation about the crisis — among federal government and embassy officials, nuclear authorities and military staff in the Pacific Command — a transcript of which Cleveland obtained through the Freedom of Information Act:

    • japanfocus.org

MR. MUELLER: So -- this is Mueller -- the sample that was taken and then what we detected, we were 100 nautical miles away and it's -- in our terms it's -- compared to just normal background it's about 30 times what you would detect just on a normal air sample out at sea. And so we thought -- we thought based on what we had heard on the reactors that we wouldn't detect that level even at 25 miles. So it's much greater than what we had thought. We didn't think we would detect anything at 100 miles.

    • Cleveland's report also sheds light on political considerations that prevented the U.S. military and other government agencies from more directly challenging TEPCO's assessments of the disaster.

    • japanfocus.org

This was an extremely sensitive diplomatic moment in the history of US-Japan relations. As an autonomous state, Japan could not be compelled to heed the U.S. government's desires, even if they were scientifically grounded and pragmatically necessary. From the beginning of the crisis, the NRC, as a U.S. government federal agency whose scientific expertise is always modulated against its political influence, took pains to remain neutral and only offer advice when called upon, serving as a resource to the Japanese government.

    • Despite concerns that TEPCO was misleading the public about the seriousness of the situation in Fukushima, the U.S. government actively pressured TEPCO to remain at the site rather than having the U.S. military take the technical lead.

    • japanfocus.org

By convincing TEPCO to remain, the U.S. and Japanese governments were able to have it both ways, with the U.S. providing crucial technical consultation but at an appropriately delicate diplomatic distance that allowed Japan to save face while taking the appropriate mitigating actions without the U.S. appearing to be puppet-master over a dependent client state.

    • The lawsuit against TEPCO alleges that the company did not adequately warn the USS Ronald Reagan service members of the risks associated with Operation Tomodachi. The plaintiffs also challenge many aspects of the Navy's account of the operation, but have not filed suit against the U.S. government.

More than 100 additional service members from the USS Ronald Reagan have asked to join the lawsuit since it was first filed. Whether or not TEPCO will be held liable will depend on the ability of crew members to prove that their disparate symptoms are all linked to their exposure to radiation.

Participants in the lawsuit have experienced a variety of severe ailments in the three years since the operation, including cancers, tumors, chronic headaches and internal bleeding. One servicewoman involved in the suit alleges that the radiation she was exposed to on the USS Ronald Reagan caused her child to be born with multiple birth defects seven months after her participation in the disaster relief efforts.

      • Cesar Penafiel · Top Commenter · New York, New YorkThese stories are so vague, they are so useless. What levels of radiation are we talking about? How many rads? Can anybody bother to look this up before writing these stories? Are we talking about over 100 rad exposure? If so, that is dangerous and bad. But saying that radiation was 30 times normal is completely meaningless unless you define what is normal and where. Radiation on the beach on top of sand in Rio de Janeiro is 50 times higher than in New York City and maybe 100 times than standing today inside Chernobyl reactor. The higher you go in the mountains, the higher the radiation gets too. Radiation levels vary by orders of magnitude city by city. So, without defining what "normal" means, it is impossible to understand if these people were exposed to real danger.

        • Cole Knapek · Drummer/Moogatronics at BLK MORALSThe complaints being filed are on the scale of radiation poisoning, abnormal brain and testicular cancers and several are suffering from persistent rectal and vaginal hemorrhaging. We dont know the scale yet but this was definitely a serious and tragic event.

      • Barry Cohen · Aircleaners.com at Self-EmployedIts a travesty that TEPCO and the Japanese Government allowed that aircraft carrier to move into the obvious radiation plume that has sickened those poor Sailors! The Navy should have paid better attention to their own radiation monitors as well! I wonder why both TEPCO or the US Navy did not provide the radiation detox mineral Zeolite to those radiated Sailors to safely remove the radiation from their bodied? Zeolite has been proven to remove the radiation from the human body so why aren't the people that have been radiated been given the proper Zeolite? If you have the interest to discover how the mineral zeolite in micronized medical grade powder works to remove radiation, just do a simple search for the single word Zeolite.

Emergency radiation testing used at Democrat and Republican conventions after Fukushima; Also for Obama Inauguration — Seafood, meat, vegetables, milk, water checked for nuclear waste, while top officials agree to publicly downplay crisis — 80% of milk samples by Orlando, FL had ‘significant’ Cs-137

New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center, Aug. 2012 (emphasis added): The Wadsworth Center, which has already tested milk samples in preparation for the upcoming national political conventions, has now been asked to test additional samples of other foods from the sites during the conventions. In August and September, during the conventions… labs will test water, lettuce, orange juice and shrimp for radiological contamination. The labs will also be testing for… radiation in various meat products… These surveillance activities are part of the Food Emergency Response Network‘s (FERN) ongoing preparations for the Republican Convention… and the Democratic Convention… The labs will be testing foriodine-131 [Half life = 8 days], cesium-137 and other… sources of radiation. Should any contaminants be identified… laboratories across the nation could be called on to test large quantities of samples… Wadsworth’s initial role in the role in the political convention preparation exercises was to measure evidence of radioactive isotopes Iodine-131 and Cesium-137 in milk prior to the conventions.
NY Dept. of Health & Dept. of Environmental Health Sciences, Apr 30, 2014: New York State is located over 10,000 km from [Fukushima]… Yet even at this distance, our laboratory easily identified 131I and 134, 137Cs [and] was among the laboratories which received an assignment to protect food during the Democratic and Republican political conventions in the U.S. in 2012… the laboratory tested 20 milk samples from Florida. Phase II consisted of radiological food testing at the Republican National Convention held in Tampa… as well as the Democratic National Convention… [We] tested 33 samples of lettuce and meatIn addition, the laboratory was involved in radiological testing of food for the Presidential Inauguration in January, 2013… for fission products of interest: 103,106Ru, 131I, and 134,137Cs… 137Cs [was detected] in 9 out of 20 milk samples from Florida… These levels… do not pose any significant health hazard… The contribution from 137Cs in Florida milk is significant… The presence of cesium in Florida milk was found to be a remnant from nuclear fallout following atmospheric testing [Note that Florida had the highest level of radioactive material from Fukushima measured anywhere in world outside Japan].
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen interview by SolarIMG: I know someone very highly placed in the State Dept., and the US government has come up with a decision… at the highest levels… to downplay Fukushima… Hillary Clinton signed a pact… saying she agreed there are no problems with Japanese food… So we are not sampling this material as it comes into the country, because our government has made a decision to downplay it.
