Widespread Power Outage Causes Chemical Scare

Because of the power outage, a local manufacturing plant had a leak of a potentially deadly gas.

Greensboro, NC -- Duke Power reports 17,500 of its Greensboro customers lost power around 10:00 Thursday night.

They say a transmission that leads into some substations in the northwest part of the city seems to be the source of the outage. Duke Power had no word on what caused the outage.
As a result of that outage, a local manufacturing plant had a leak of a potentially deadly gas.

Greensboro Fire Assistant Chief David Douglas tells WFMY News 2 that chemists were mixing hydrogen when the power went out.

Exhaust fans used protect the workers were shut off. The chemists smelled the gas and workers in the building were evacuated as a precaution. Four people were affected by the gas, but were treated and released at the scene.

Hydrogen sulfide can kill instantly when released in large amounts. Cheif Douglas says this incident was a relatively small amount.

Duke Power says all but 100 of their customers have power back on.
