Though news of the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last year has been pushed off of the front page of most newspapers for several months due to a number of government scandals and failings, new polling indicates that a majority of people in the Nation believe that the Barack Obama Administration has something to hide with relation to the attack.

The poll, released by the conservative SecureAmericaNow.org, found that nearly two out of three Americans believe that the Administration is “trying to cover up the facts” about the attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans Sept. 11, 2012.

Among Republicans, 89 percent believe that a Benghazi attack cover-up was orchestrated by Administration officials, and more than 40 percent of Democrats hold the same view.

Sixty-two percent of respondents said that Congress should put together a “special bipartisan committee with broad powers to get to the truth about the attack in Benghazi.” Of that number, 83 percent were Republicans, 58 percent were independents. Half of the Democrats polled said a committee should be created to investigate the Benghazi attack.

Representative Frank Wolf (R-Va.), who has already introduced legislation to create a bipartisan committee with special, extra authority to more comprehensively investigate the events that took place in Benghazi, touted the poll’s results.

“[The] findings show that the vast majority of Americans are echoing what the American Legion, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the Special Ops community, the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal, the family members of the victims and my colleagues in the House have been saying all along: that a Select Committee is the only way to get to the bottom of what happened last year in Benghazi.”

Wolf’s legislation currently has 177 co-sponsors.

House Speaker John Boehner has said that he opposes the creation of a special committee to further investigate the Benghazi attack, saying that Congressional bodies that already exist are “well-equipped” to investigate the matter.
